You don't think less of me because I memorized the lyrics from this game's music, right?

>> No.6011510

People like the lyrics to this game. I had this game for the Sega Saturn back in the day, but sent my copy away to a random youtuber. I hated the Euro-pop centric lyrics. But the game does have an option for instrumental versions of the soundtrack. Which aren't too bad in comparison.

Sonic R is not 'that bad' as a game. It does have some weird jank, and is incredibly short. But I did play through it many times and unlocked all the characters.

Actually the opposite, I think higher of you.

>>6011510
It has its fair share of bugs and is sometimes just... unfinished. Yet it's still a lot of fun, so I wouldn't call it a bad game either.

I played the PC version first to completion and then the Saturn version. I feel like the Saturn version is less busted, and has less clipping exploits.

For some reason I feel like it looks better, but that could just be the Analog output softening up the jagged bullshit.

They're cute, fun, and romantic. It's healthy to consume things that make you feel good, and... dare I say. Brighten up your day?

Pitch it up +25 and it sounds much better. If you nightcore eurodance it turns into happy hardcore.

I have never played the PC version. But comparing it to the Saturn original, the PC version does have large draw distances, runs at higher resolutions and supports hardware acceleration through direct X.

I wouldn't be surprised if it does have a few clipping bugs, though. The Sega Saturn original is still really impressive graphically, though. Travellers Tales did a great job with the engine. It uses some sort of 12 layers of transparencies to fade in and out objects, to hide the lower draw distance. It does use transparencies on the emerald stage. The Saturn game engine was originally made for a F1 racing game, but was re-purposed for Sonic R. The Sonic R engine could have made for a decent 3D platformer engine.

The PC port was used as a base for the Sonic Gems Collection for the GameCube and PS2.

The game's length is really what annoys me. I like Sonic R, but the game literally has no content. The stages are so short, the songs don't even reach the chorus half the time. If it had double the amount of stages, it would have been a lot better. Compare the amount of stages here with Super Mario Kart.

Sonic R and the Sega Saturn was a very comfy time in my life. It was the last console my father bought for me. We loved going to the arcade during the summer and were big on House of the Dead. He bought the Saturn just in anticipation for that port. Even though it inevitably was disappointing in comparison to the arcade, having access to a bunch of arcade games like Daytona was a lot of fun. We would play together after I did my homework for the entire afternoon. He would drive me to Toys R Us and together we would check out the Saturn library and pick out games to try together.

anyway

When I was in the 5th grade I used to write fanfic stories of Sonic R for my creative writing class. I even wrote down the lyrics into the stories by listening to the tracks over and over until I wrote down every word. The teacher read my story out loud and made fun of it in front of the class. I was so embarrassed.

Most of the friends I had in grade school either liked or didn't mind Sonic too much. It wasn't until Sonic 06 came out that there was really any kind of stigma behind the games or being a fan of them.

Sonic R is the most mediocre shit ever. The core gameplay is... fine, the courses are... fine, the method of unlocking stuff is... fine. The music is fun in a weird cheesy mid '90s eurodance vibe kind of way that doesn't really fit with a Sonic game. And then you have the fact that you can 100% the game in half an hour comfortably and it travels into "why even bother playing" tier. Even something like Pokemon Snap, which is over pretty quick, has more to it and more to keep you coming back every so often to run through it again. Sonic R is just thoroughly underwhelming. It kind of feels insulting that it was ever sold at full price, to be honest. I love Traveler's Tales, but the game feels like a side mode in a game rather than the actual game. At least that would justify why it's so short and devoid of content.

It is if you play it right. Most people use the d-pad/stick to control it. If you use the accelerate button it works absolutely fine.

>>but sent my copy away to a random youtuber

Maybe not a random Youtuber to me. Someone I have known for years, who has a YT channel with about 20K+ subscribers, who does game reviews once in a while (and owns a Saturn) amongst other things. I lost my Saturn years ago, but still had a loose copy of Sonic R and the manual laying around. But no box.

>> No.6013056

>>6013020

That's the problem with the game. It felt like it was rushed through development to meet a deadline. The game could have had at least twice as many tracks and more content. The game has like 5 tracks, and the ability to play them in reverse. But reversing the tracks was always a lazy way to double the number. The game engine is really good, though.

>>6013031
>It is if you play it right. Most people use the d-pad/stick to control it. If you use the accelerate button it works absolutely fine.

yeah, that's the best way to play the game. Hold down the accelerator button and play it like a racing game.
