People like to make this comparison, but it doesn't really work. Arcade machines were state-of-the-art graphics and sound with dedicated controllers designed for the individual game. Hardware so expensive you could only dream of having it at home, but you could rent access to it for a quarter.

They are the polar opposite of mobile gaming desu, where mobile shit is free to play arcade games are pay to play, where mobile shit forces grinding or paying up arcade games are pure skill based challenges that are honest about what they are, where mobile games have layers of progression systems profiles and customizations the only thing you get to keep in arcade games is your score. I read an article about this game decades ago and always wanted to play it but could never find it. Parker Brothers made a port of it for the 2600 so I bought it. I must have played that thing for months and got really good at it. later on I was with my family at Ocean City NJ and found the real thing at the arcade there. I must have pumped ten dollars worth of quarters into that thing but could not get anywhere.

Still, when I win the Powerball this will be my first purchase for my entertainment room.

i was lucky to have a small but relatively well stocked and maintained indie arcade a few 100 yards from my house. this little den of iniquity nestled in an outer unit of the mall. It was smelly and actually a sketchy place to be for a kid back in the 80/90s... it had so many classic games which i was privileged to experience first hand. double dragon, golden axe, rampage, afterburner. space harrier, outrun, fantasy zone, rush'n'attack, shinobi, toki, wonder boy, for a small indie arcade it was suprising just how many cabinets and class games it would have through its doors, even before the likes of mortal kombat and virtua fighter, before house of the dead...

tl;dr shitty ass town with nothing going for it in the 80s has a hidden gem of an indie arcade, a couple of 100yrds from this 8yo front door... a who's who of 80s and 90s arcade classics...

Not the guy you're responding to, but I disagree. Most of the speedrunners would rather grind games they already played in the past due to nostalgia and familiarity, so for them to play shmups is rather unlikely.

Doing one or two runs a day while generally getting further each time for couple of weeks-month isn't what I'd call "grinding autistically" which usually implies constant restarts with no progress and binge playing. I don't see the point of a game you can beat without trying though, it makes them disposable and unmemorable.

In my country, arcades were very popular, but also a bit shady as a young kid in the 80s. Sometimes tough guys would steal your coins, or some teenage gang would sit outside and ask for an 'entrance fee' to young kids. Smoking was also allowed inside, and sometimes the whole place would smell like weed.
But overall it was not so bad. The ones in malls were cleaner and you could hang out with lots of people, spend the whole afternoon outside while also playing games.

Talk to me in time or credits. "runs" means nothing.
That could literally be 5minutes? If youre first run ends on stage 1 and second run ends on stage 2...
You mean credits? You play 1 or 2 credits a day? The fuck is that shit. It'll take you MONTHS to 1cc even a shit easy game you aren't familiar with. Just pick a new hobby if that's what you're doing.
Are you talking about doing runs in games you've already cleared and are familiar with? Because -full runs- don't usually happen until you've already grinded out some routes and bosses and know the stages moderately well...

> I don't see the point of a game you can beat without trying though, it makes them disposable and unmemorable.

1. Runs never end in stage 1-2 unless you are beyond trash, in a 5 stage game the first 3 stages are usually easy enough that you can beat them blind, in some games like beat 'em ups you can play for almost 20 minutes before game overing even playing blind
2. Is the concept of credit feeding for practice alien to you? You do full runs of the game credit feeding once you get a game over to get practice at the later parts, it's extremely common
>If you're playing 1-2 credits a day, or 10-20minutes, or whatever the heck you're doing, then you aren't even trying as it is.
Is this the mind of a binge gamer neet? Trying means sticking to a game and learning it thoroughly, I've spent hundreds of hrs playing some games over the course of years and got very good at them simply because I enjoy them. Meanwhile you do what, binge play until you "beat" a game in the most low effort way possible and move on? I never said I was special, but you must have missed the weekly threads we get about people complaining how complicated mame is to set up.
I just don't understand why someone would hate arcade games that much otherwise, they were the best games of their time, both for their technology but also for design. Yeah there's exceptions like shitty belt scrollers that force you to take damage or has a time limit, but that hardly applies to most arcade games.
So the only 2 possibilities left are they can't get mame set up, or they just really suck at the games.

If you truly believe that putting a quarter into an arcade machine is a bigger rip than paying 10 dollars to see White Chicks in theaters, then I think the real problem is with you and your level of skill.

That said, this is 4chan and anyone who says something like that is baiting, thereby detracting from the overall quality of the thread, which makes them a double-nigger.

Real-talk, at the end of the day I'd rather give a quarter to a Jew than another second of my attention to a retarded subhuman zoomer whose tiny mutant FAS peepee can only make c*mmies if he thinks he's causing people to be #upsetonline.

You went to an arcade with friends, your parents gave you money, you put money in machine for quarters or tokens, you spent the afternoon playing games with your friends that were far superior to what you could play on consoles at the time in terms of graphics and sound. Also, before everyone got computers and went online after 2000, arcades were the main source of multiplayer gaming(playing games with/against strangers) for the majority of people.
>m-m-money
You didn't care back then because it wasn't your money, it was your parents money. And there's no reason to care today, since emulation is free. Biggest non-argument when it comes to playing arcade games.
>quarter munchers!
Quit playing beat-em-ups and shoot-em-ups, try some other arcade genres. Not every game was designed to eat quarters, they were designed to challenge you and all you have to do is git gud. Beat-em-ups and shoot-em-ups had those difficulty spikes specifically to prevent easy wins. >Romsets neet to match mame version.
It's not 100%. Many roms will stay the same between sets, usually only a dozen or so working titles will see any change unless there's a massive change like the QSoundDSP change. Most of the time it's just additional clones being added, which aren't needed unless you really want a complete set of every single clone of a game. For example, going from 0.205 to 0.206, 61 games that actually work had changes or additional clones added. That's out of the over however many thousands of games MAME emulates.

The easiest way to upgrade or downgrade your MAMEset is to audit your currently existing set. Find the games that need updating, and go look for the individual ROMs you need to get everything back to 100%. To downgrade to an older set, find the games that don't match up, and look for "Rollback" romset for MAME which contains all the old and no longer used ROMs. The other option is to redownload the entire goddamn set every time something changes, which is the way most retards who complain about MAME do it.

Do sets completely change for every game when there's a new milestone romset, like, I don't get why people say this shit

If you download King of Fighters 98 and the neo geo bios, there's not 215 different versions you could possibly get that you need to specifically match to mame version

>> No.6016903

>>6016883
MAME is extremely anal about the way game files are laid out, wanting exact checksums of the latest romdumps, and won't even run a game if it's deemed to be too old. Hence why romsets keep changing or state they're for specific versions of MAME. You would know this if you figured out MAME 6 years ago like you claim.

>All I want is to set up mame for some capcom and neo geo games but I'm too dumb and stupid to figure all this shit out. I put the roms inside the folder but it keeps telling me it's not the right one, the hell's going on here?

1. Make sure romset version and MAME version match for highest compatibility. If you're downloading from a source that doesn't clearly state the every ROM's version, stop doing that and throw out all games you got in this manner. That is just asking for trouble.
2. Get the whole BIOS pack (~100 MB) an install of it.
3. If you have a split romset make sure that for any game you want to play you have the parent ROM installed and not just one of the clones. Those don't run by themselves, they require the parent rom to be present as well. Parent ROMs on the other hand run on their own.
4. For select titles you might need a CHD file to be present in addition to the ROM file. Killer Instinct 1+2, Ray Crisis, Red Earth and Street Fighter 3 are some of the more prominent examples in this category. CHD files each go into separate directory inside your ROM directory and the directories they're in need to be named like the ROM files they belong to. CHD files, just like have ROM files, have their own set and... you guessed it... its version number should match with the rest of you stuff. You rarely need CHDs though and the set is not small.
5. Also don't unpack MAME ROMs. The stay zipped and don't rename them.

If you follow these rules you should have no trouble getting things up and running. Still, there are games that are in the MAME romset but are not playable or run very poorly. Hope this helps.

>Waaaah, waaaah, so mean!!! Just a big meanie!!

Gb2 reddit, dumbass

Anyways, more on topic -

My favorite arcade games are mostly rhythm games and 3D driving stuff that's not easily emulatable without a good PC.

That fits into the criteria of this board though, basically the whole Sega Model 2 and 3 catalog is amazing. Model 2 stuff is fairly widely ported but Model 3 at least Supermodel does a decent job that I can recall, it's been a while. Scud Race/Sega Super GT is still just jawdropping today, really euphoric experience.

NFL Blitz 99, 2000 might be the funnest sports games ever made idk.

Street Hoop on neo geo is a good competitor though, I always liked it more than the floaty physics of NBA Jam, the music is amazing too.

Windjammers on neo geo is one of the best multiplayer games ever simply because I've never seen anyone who's seen it and played it for more than 5 seconds not instantly love it and get hooked, and anyone can immediately be competitive and things can get really hype with a group of people playing, really fast.

For shmups, I've been playing a lot of Soukyugurentai lately. I think ST-V is emulated OK in mame? But it has psx/saturn ports too. I like it's heavy handed moody atmosphere and 90s anime cheese aesthetic with excessive plastering of kanji all over the screen in transitional screens, I say these things in a positive way. Also like how they made it a vertical scroller that fills the screen and makes use of the extra side to side space with it's shooting system.

A fighter I feel like gets underrated is Power Instinct 2, and the arcade version is the only proper one really, PSX really nerfs the backgrounds. It's just weird and kind of ugly and has great music, fighting physics feel hard hitting and satisfying, etc. Always a pleasure to play.

Played this for on and off in week long bursts where I'd play a game each day just for fun. It's totally worth dropping a buck into this machine and having a blast for a good dozen minutes. It was this exact super deluxe machine, with working wheel/pedal/shift and a seat that throws you around quite realistically during turns and jumps, except it probably won't explode. It looked and sounded like a spectacle on that huge ass screen too.

I found it by luck in a local glorified gambling den that also has some real arcade games. I never saw anyone else playing it, ever. Like most of the arcadey games, except the pool tables I guess. I eventually got into the top 10, I think 4, or 7 was the best, Maybe both, I had at least two entries, but I'm not sure. I wanted to fill the whole list eventually, but found they had gotten rid of it one day. The workers I asked didn't even know it had existed when I asked where it's gone. Fuck that place.

Amazing. Don't try to emulate an SGI workstation, you'll never get it running.

For anyone who wants to get MAME working and doesn't know how, here's an easy way:
1. Google mame romset, you'll probably find the best sets on internet archive. Get the most recent version. ROMs should be in .zip format, and the less than 100 CHD games require a .CHD file or two in a folder named the exact same as the .zip with the game ROMs.
2. Download that version of MAME, or whatever frontend you wanna use. MAME has mouse support and filters these days, so I just use MAME.
3. Download the latest version of RomCenter, I think it's 4.0rc4 or something these days, dunno.
4. Point RomCenter at your copy of MAME to create a .DAT of all the roms it supports.
5. Point RomCenter at all your roms. Scan.
6. Is everything green? It's as complete and working as it will get. Something yellow? It has the right files or the right files are available from another rom in your collection. Right click and choose FIX.
7. ROMs are Red? You're missing shit son. Look at the ROM. What files are missing? Google that CRC32 hash for that missing file. You should find a download link in the results. Add that to your collection, re-scan, repeat 6-7 until everything is green. Add the full .zip, don't bother adding individual files.

PRO MODE:
Wanna "downgrade" your ROMs to an older version of MAME? Try looking for a "Rollback" romset for a MAME version close to your existing romset. Add the rollback .zip's for whatever games don't match the .DAT of the older MAME version.
Wanna upgrade from release to release but don't have access to private torrent sites? Google "MAME (XXX) roms sooner" where (XXX) is the version you are updating to. Only good for 10-ish most recent updates, they pull the older stuff eventually.

>> No.6020501

>>6020492
cont.

So if you wanna go from 0.212 to 0.215, download 0.215 MAME, get the DAT, then google "MAME 0.213 roms sooner", get the games that RomCenter shows as needing stuff, then do it again with 0.214, and 0.215.

If you are updating often, you may find benefit from using a "merged" romset, which has every clone and variant plus needed BIOS files for each game within a single .zip for that game. By default this will force all your games to the parent version, but that's not really an issue unless you wanted all spanish language releases or something. Even then you can just rename that .zip to the variant/clone you wanted to play, and it will work just fine.
If you don't update often, you'll probably want to stick with a normal "split" romset, since the majority of changes to the romsets is adding more clones/variants of games, which you don't NEED in order to actually play the parent or any already existing clones/variants. This way the majority of your roms won't need updating between revisions.

Don't overthink it

If you're on Windows i like MameUIFX, you can use shaders with it etc pretty easily

Mac, I've used SDLMame lots, retroarch is another easy way but I hate using that program with a keyboard so ymmv

Dont get a whole romset. You don't need to and It's stupid. You will end up with a bunch of space taken up by a shit ton of variant roms, shovelware you'll never play and stuff that is not yet playable or not at good speeds by anything but a god tier pc due to its method of emulation which is not meant to be efficient.

MameUI will list info for everything so from there.. I want to play 3rd Strike.

Type 3rd strike into the search. This will show you what the parent rom is and all the variants available. I personally opted to just use the No-CD version, which is a variant of the main 3rd strike. So, google "sf3iii.zip" or whatever the actual name is. Get that and put it in your rom folder, and because I want to play the no cd version, whatever the .zip for that variant is.

For some reason it seems like a lot of people get confused and just download the no cd rom which is probably like 1MB and then REEEE when it doesn't work because they didnt put 2 and 2 together that 3rd strike is probably bigger than 1MB so they come on 4chan and make a thread about

>WHY IS MAME SO FUCKING HARD ALL THESE FUCKKING CLONE ROMS I JUST WANT TO PLAY STREET FIGHTER!!!!

Once theyre in your roms folder, try to run it. If it works, great, if not, take note of what it tells you is missing and just google "XX.01 not found" or w/e it tells you and someone has probably already asked that question somewhere for you to find what you actually need

Rinse and repeat for everything else. Neo geo I think theres been a few different bios sets over time but again, Google.

This has worked flawlessly for me since 2003 and I am passing on this time honored, protected wizard knowledge to you and all so that reddit fag who called me an elitist meanie can calm down now

I think Q-Sound added a DSP file a little while back, but usually BIOS files remain the same from the day they originally got dumped. The only other exception I can think of is some hard to dump chips got properly dumped, but I think those were game specific like Operation Wolf, and not part of the general BIOS pack.

Easiest way to check is to audit.

On a different topic, what's worse, anons?

>No arcades anymore at all

>The ones in NA that still exist with /vr/ content are mostly cringy "barcades" that mostly stock casual-tier 80's american games

An arcade finally opened in my city 10 years after the original one closed, and it's basically just aimed at 40 somethings who remember the glory days of missile command, centipede, etc.

They do a good job of restoring these 30+ year old cabinets and shit and it's cool from a historical aspect I guess but I'm pissed off that this is probably the only one we're ever gonna get again and I gotta pretend to want to play Frogger to have a good time going there

Round 1 is cool if you like rhythm games, at the very least. Tbh maybe its' just me getting older but even when I went to Japan a couple years ago I was happy to see big arcades as a regular sight but even there the decline is evident and saddening. Sitdown/crt cabs are mostly relegated to a small retro corner in game centres, a lot of new arcade games have like premium pay-to-unlock type aspects to them, lots of rehashed anime cash-in games etc (though that's always been a thing)
