The Sega CD was more or less a pioneering from Sega. The technology just wasn't completely there for the time, though it wasn't in vain. Aside the sluggish load times and FMV genre, it was a pretty bold marketing and technological gamble. Kudos to them for making the attempt, but shame on them for flooding the shelves with FMV games which 9 times out of 10 sucked.

I don't think it made the Genesis ugly either, though the excess of cables was annoying.

Phantasy Star is like the only game worth playing on Master System. Go with the Power Base (unless you reallllly want to Master System).

Things to note, if you have a model 1 Gen, you can use the AV and plug from that on the Master System, so if you find one without chords, go for it.

The system itself sold well, but there was rampant pirating, which is why Nintendo didn't release the system overseas. There was around 4.5 million of them sold in japan, compated to over 19 million Famicoms.

It did pretty well at first, but after pirates figured out how to make their own disks, sales quickly went down. Nintendo didn't release the FDS in America because of this.(This was also before pirate companies figured out how to circumvent the lockout chip, save for maybe Tengen)

Also, Nintendo lost a lot of money on having to repair the disk drives, as they aren't very durable.(disk belt rarely works on FDS units these days, but not that hard to replace)

Fun fact: Nintendo fixed FDS units as late as 2005. That's one hell of a warrenty.

>Fun fact: Nintendo fixed FDS units as late as 2005. That's one hell of a warrenty.

They actually fixed the disks more than the systems. Since the disk belt is easy to replace with a rubber band.

Ah yes, forgot to mention the disk durability. That's actually a bigger problem than the system itself, and this was only released in Japan where people are generally more careful with their stuff. Imagine all the broken disks Nintendo would have to replace in the US or Europe.

I'd love to get a hold of a Famicom Disk System, but with how expensive shipping from Japan is and that the disks have higher failure rates than cartridges or CD's, I think I may just buy one of these when they start making them with cartridge cases.
