When I was a kid we mainly played All Stars for the save files, but it never fully replaced the NES originals. One of us would suggest playing Mario, then we'd discuss which version to play as well. Different kids had different reasons for preferring whichever version but we all agreed the save files were really nice for SMB3 and most agreed that the All Stars version of SMB2 was better than the NES original.

It was a product of its time. At a time before "backwards compatibility" and widespread emulation, it was the best way for people who didn't have or never played a NES to get caught up on several classic Mario titles, all on one cart. It was also the only way that most people outside of Japan had to play the original Super Mario Bros. 2 at the time.

That said, there's not much reason to go back and play it these days when you could just as easily play the originals.

It's a nice alternative to not play always the same one. I love alternating between SMB3 NES and SNES. The NES one is insuperable, but the All-Stars one is also charming as fuck, I enjoy the more detailed colors and different backgrounds.

Nah, on a non-autist speedrunner level the handling in SMB2 & 3 work exactly the same for most intents and purposes. The problem is the well-known brick break bug in 1 and Lost Levels. It's extremely noticeable and downright annoying even for casual players familiar with the original
