Don't remember any major changes outside of graphic and Sega CD opening of Lunar 1.

But Lunar 2 CD is better since PSX the localization version redid a lot of the mechanics which made it more annoying to play. Like having to spend I think money to save and few other things.

Fusion emulator and the few times I touched it and works alright. Might find some audio issues and other things but overall it works. PSX doesn't really have enough changes to really say Sega CD is better unless you really enjoy the Sega CD pixel style which is nice. PSX anime cut scenes looks nice too.

As I said Lunar 2 is the one you should maybe look into the Sega CD version.

Working Design is well known for tweeking their games in a lot of unfun ways. But feel too many people have a weird fondness for their games to really care to undo it.

Popful Mail is one of the most well known fuckery where enemies near the end just hit like a fucking brick in the localized version and stop a lot of people from beating it.

Honestly, and this gets said a lot, but I'd really recommend you play both for this as well as the sequel. The changes aren't small and while the broad strokes are the same there is quite a significant overall. PS1 Silver Star is probably a bit more fleshed out though. Eternal Blue on the other hand is were things get really hard to pick.

I was quite captivated by SSS Complete as a kid. Something about it is just so charming, it really gave me that "playing an anime" feel. Can't remember which girl tickled my peepee the most, but Jessica is probably the one who stuck with me the most, but Royce is nice and Xenobia has that hot 40-something MILF look going on. Loved those revealing outfits, really put the goods on display. They also put a nice ass shot on the back of the case. To be honest just thinking about this game is giving me a tingle, even though I just jerked it not too long ago I might want to bust a nut to one of the Lunar babes before I head off to sleep (it is 3:21AM where I am).

There was one early strategy guide for Silver Star or Eternal Blue, where the WD people basically flat out said that the FF writers COULD NOT WRITE. Now you can LOL WD, but from what I recall their big complaint and main point was that FF writers were more obsessed with creating a big twist or set piece (The FF8 orphanage twist as an example) but never really putting much thought into how they get to those moments or what impact those moments actually have on the main story. And while I do love me some classic FF I think they're kind of right. If you look at games like the Lunars, Grandia and hell even Chrono Trigger to give Square some credit, there's a very clear through line in the flow of the story. Gamearts were very keen on making the actual middle parts of their games feel important. The whole game was about the adventure and they wanted to keep that flow.

Final Fantasy always seem to tried to punch above it's weight class. Trying to be big and weird well before the PSX era. Hell FF1 you can seem them trying to poke fun at DQ1 by rescuing the princess right at the start of the game. The problem however was that...well Final Fantasy never really felt like they knew what they wanted the series to be. Each game tried to be so different in lots of different ways that it just made the series more of a mess than anything.
>Lunars, Grandia and hell even Chrono Trigger
Because those were mostly just trying to be fun JRPG adventures. Lunar main selling point was it's anime cut scenes while still being a cute fun adventure.

I think the earlier FFs at least kept their heads out of the clouds though. Well mostly. But most modern ones have gone completely mental with their jargon and other such bullshit. Like in FF6 and 7 you didn't need a glossary to get what magicite or materia was and the characters were still, for want of a better term, human. They were clear "stop the empire/megacorp" stories.

Played through the PS1 version this August and it was great.

Loved the characters and tone, game knew when to stay a lighthearted adventure and when to reveal something big and honestly quite shocking. When Nash betrays you, it was actually quite surprising. Shame the dub ruined his betrayal by making him shout "CHECK THIS OUT" in his cocky voice. Hell, the bit afterward where Mia says she loves him after his boss fight was also quite surprising since you kind of felt it was a one way attraction since she doesn't really give any indication she truly likes him until this moment.

Characters overall were pretty based, loved Kyle the most and Jessica was best girl but they were all great, I was happy that in the end Each guy got the girl they were after. Which is a common trope for the main character, but never his party. People shit on the localization for the PS1 version but I think it gives the game some charm, kinda like the Shenmue dub. I mean sure, the characters interacted in stupid and unrealistic ways with some dumb pop culture references from the time, but I felt the added elements were great. Loved the music as well, "Fun Travelling" is such a great theme for the world map.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=llHxavPRR-U

Really only issue I can give to the game is that the battles are a bit too slow for my liking, and Luna leaves the party too early which is a shame, understandable but still a shame, especially if they have some decent items on them.

Judging jrpg writing is totally gay, poorly translated JRPGs even more because you are essentially playing an autistic game of telephone by judging the writing of 5-10 other people filtered through the rushed cobbled together character-limited rewritings of some unpaid overworked nobody at the localization team.

So basically I'm saying that Woolsey did nothing wrong.

The Silver Star if you want Eternal Blue to make a little more sense, Silver Star Story if you want something generally agreed to be a little more fun (albeit somewhat more casual). The way that the developers rationalized the changes were that "Mr. Mega-CD and Mr. PlayStation each recall the story differently," but for some reason they didn't bother altering the plot of the Eternal Blue remake accordingly (and if you're curious, I believe both GBA and PSP are based heavily on the PSX version).

I mean judging JRPG from the 90's was worse since until FF8 Square either just tried doing it themselves with a Japanese-English Dictionary like with FF4, Woolsey giving 0 time and had to cut 1/3 of the lines out to fit on a cart, or I have 0 idea why FF7 is as bad as the way it is.

FF9 localization is perfectly fine. Most of the issues is how since half the games wasn't done yet and the rest was handled so poorly they didn't really have the English past too look to when localizing it so lots of the references was lost in translation.

They use assets from the PSX version (like the FMVs) but I believe the stories have removed the changes that fuck up EB. I won't deny that the translations probably aren't doing a lot of these games any favors but you should still be able to get a sense of the base plot and it's still very clear that Square cares a lot more about singular moments than the whole.

The remakes have a better presentation on the surface level, but when you take a look at them more deeply, they definitely seem to have another audience in mind. Take this cutscene of Hiro walking into Lucia bathing in Eternal Blue:
>Original: *Hiro hears singing* *cut to Lucia* *sideways turn* "Who's there...?" *gasp*
>Remake: Lucia: *singing* Hiro: *stares for a longass time* *heavy breathing* Lucia: Who's there? *locks eyes* *eyes widen* *gasp* KYA-MOTHERFUCKIN'-AAAAAAGH!!!!! *jumps into water* Hiro: *confused look* Durr?
They take little moments like these and make them over-the-top, but the original makes sense with her personality and what we've seen of her. If I had to sum it up, Sega CD and PlayStation had two different design philosphies: the former was concerned with making a JRPG that took advantage of the CD-based hardware, the latter was more about outright making a cartoon that happened to be on a game console.

Sick pixel art with striking animation and parallax layers looks better than some plastic looking unreal engine shit that makes your computer sound like a jet taking off because its rendering every particle in a cloud of smoke.

I'm just hazarding a guess, but I wouldn't think Lunar 2 pushes the Sega CD in any way other than storage space (they clearly cut the audio quality in half so it could fit on the disk). And I'm sure it would have been possible to get everything down to 700 MB. The cutscenes are probably background layers with animated sprites on the moving parts. Exactly the sort of graphics the Genesis/Sega CD is designed to render. A ton of work for skilled artists, though. You need professionals to make something that looks that good.

In response to some other comments here, it isn't 2010 anymore. Indie developers are putting out stuff that looks great now.

This is true. I was okay with the voice acting until Nall showed up with some Krillin sounding bullshit so I switched to an Undub. It's for the best anyway because I was already dreading Kyle being nowhere near as entertaining as he was in SSSC

I can understand why people like FF7 and why it did so well, but that's a valid fucking point.

Every other fucking scene in that game is the game telling you where you need to go next by acting like you already decided on that decision in a previous scene that never fucking happened.

"So you folks are trying to cross the swamp, huh?"
No we're looking for a scary murder elf with a long sword, when did we even address the swamp, I'm not sure I even saw it on the world map before I-
"Well you'll need a chocobo to get past that giant monster."

"How did the Turks know we were planning on coming to this village"
What plan? This isn't even where we were supposed to be going? I didn't even know there was a village here!

"Here we are, Our home town, where that big secret lab was and where everything went to bad..."
>Nothing actually happens or gets discovered here except find an optional party member, and even that part is confusingly unimpactful, and you end up moving on feeling like you missed something important.

And 7 is actually one of the BETTER ones in regards to how it progresses. There are clear goals and obstacles and the only real MAJOR falling I can give it is that a lot of the character motivations are a bit dry. Also they kind of seemed to forget that Reno is responsible for the deaths of thousands of people.

Still you can at least understand shit. I still have no idea what that Dream of the Fayth shit from 10 was supposed to be. Game would have worked just fine if not better if Tidus was just some time displaced asshole.

>> No.6010661

>>6010645
Uh bro, you do realize that RPG's especially leave out dialogue that you can assume was stated? Members obviously know their way around the world, and would know they have to cross the swamp to keep going, and would ask about it. For example Aerith is from that village, Gongaga or whatever, Barrett was at Cosmo Canyon, etc... Why wouldn't the Turks assume you would stop by a town which is on the way? Your argument comes off more like you need everything spelt out for you. Not trying to flame or anything.

Ill agree with you that 7 is a bad example of this. It's at least clear what and why you're doing shit. My only BIG problem with it is that some characters have a very superfluous motivation. Red XIII and Yuffie being key examples. When I complain about FFs bad writing I typically go to 8s orphanage plot and memory loss inconsistency, X's dream bullshit and whatever the fuck was happening in 13.

I mean the issue is all of these type of games (Lunar, Valis, ect.) that sold on it's anime cut scenes only really worked back than because it's all they really had. Back than all they had was sprites that bounce a bit as a text form. But with bigger storage with CD they started adding stuff like cut scenes with high quality music with voices. And once it became standard they needed to push more which gave you anime footage that wasn't just the opening or with something like Final Fantasy 3D models. But once PS2 era happened when all the character and scenes was at the fight high that was when the anime cut scenes didn't make sense anymore. Yeah they looked nice but they really was only there because the quality wasn't at a point where they could do anything better.

I mean try if you wish it. But asking if there's a market for it is a tricky one. Since the real reason why those anime cut scenes exist is because it's the best they could do at the time. I mean all you had was just character sprites bouncing around giving funny expressions. With CD you could just replace those goofy stuff with nice anime cut scenes to give better look at what is happening in the story even if the cut scenes where short. You had detail look at the characters and environment where they were which you couldn't really give at that time. Once polygons offered enough detail the idea of having those anime cut scenes were...well useless. Yeah starting a new game sometimes had them but now with detail models everything is uniformed in a way that older games couldn't.

I have to do lower quality cause I just dont have the financial horsepower to do it.
