The intro of the game literally has you go through the gameplay loop of getting party wiped by a boss and then building a new party from the ground up specifically just to counter that single boss.

Now the spriggan is quite early and skippable, but you should get used to the idea and make plenty of mental notes on character classes, formations, and protective skills/spells/gear for all manner of situations.

SaGa Frontier, Romancing SaGa Minstrel's Song or Romancing SaGa 3 are the most accessible and engaging for a beginner in my opinion. Saga Frontier is your best bet because its characters' personal storyline is the focus throughout the game and setting/music is unlike any other game.

You're welcome!
I'd say a lot of them have good stories in their own way but they're stories about the world more than the characters.

SaGa 1-2 are experimental party composition games, where 2 has some story but it's on the GB so it's to its detriment imo.
Romancing Saga is experimenting with non-linear story progression, and is more about smaller plots and unfolding greater lore than typical story telling.
Frontier 1 has distinct character scenarios while keeping some elements of classic SaGa and Romancing.
Frontier 2 is an epic, political, interwoven story told through different perspectives in a loose manner. Probably the most esoteric to play though.

I take it Octopath Traveler was heavily inspired by these huh? I played it a little bit and what sucks about that game's story is all these characters really have no reason to be together and so far none of it seems connected to an overarching plot. I know it's not vr material, but I'd like to know what people here who actually got far or completed it think of the game... I thought Ellen was better with Fist? Black the pirate dude was best Axman(after he regains his youth from the water boss), and also best suited for the demonlord set.

Robin was good with Spear because of his STR, though his spark list allows him to learn more Epee techs faster. Other than him, there's the fairy , Merchant MC(better as a mage though) and the one armed guy. But for the one-arm guy, you're better off giving the silverarm to a good swordsman with 2 swords equipped like Harid.

>> No.6013350

Which SaGa? They're all slightly different. RS3 has multiple endings for each MC. But overall, it's the same plot. I couldn't be assed to replay it after winning with Katrina. It's a long grindy game.

Saga Frontier and SF2 are the games that have a different main plot depending on which MC you choose.

SaGa 1-3 only has one main plot AFAIK. No multiple endings.

RS2 only has slight differences depending on male/female MC and which person you marry. Not sure about it since I've never played it.

No idea about the other games.

For the MC characters in the game, they have little interaction after the intro part.

There's a big extra dungeon. Talk to some dude at morbellem for info then it appears near the mermaid town. There are four color coded parts where enemies are arranged by battle rank and by species. You can get two new recruitable units, a new formation, and a bunch of new weapons and armor. You can easily obtain gear stronger than regular endgame gear in your second generation if you're playing with additional content. At the top of each tower is a dragon and if you beat all the dragons you can fight the dread queen.
There's also one little fight with victor that you can do with your final emperor if you add every territory to your empire (not sure if it's okay to choose dark magic over salamanders). Can't think of anything else.

I've been dissapointed before though where I jump into a game and instantly regret it and stop having fun. At 30$ I want to make sure this is worth getting on the Switch. yeah that's the thing. this game doesnt play like classic rpg and grinding isnt really recommended for any saga games. you miss events that you can find throughout the world and the enemy scales to how many battles you had.
if you want a cheaper option, i recommend starting with 2 although idk if thats available for switch. 3 is easier than 2 though and i think its a better place to start this series, but i really have no idea if you will like it or not. its a very non linear game and the game expects you to find the adventures yourself rather than giving you a guided path. i find that part to be the most exciting aspect of the saga series but some find it aimless and boring. generally what i noticed is that people either love it or hate it. in japan though saga is a really loved series unlike the english speaking communities.

Despite SaGa having an anti-grinding reputation, I find that I'm really going to have to do that now that I'm stuck fighting Red Dragon Lord. Oh well, there's some other side-quests I can do, but I was hoping to do those on a different playthrough rather than doing everything I can find on a single run. I definitely liked RS2 much more than this, though that was my first entry in the series.
Anyway, what's the general opinion between SaGa 1 and its wonderswan remake? Do they offer somewhat different experiences and make them both worth looking into, or does the remake try to replace the original like many remakes attempt to do? I guess that question could also include SaGa 2 and 3's DS remakes, though I already know the situation behind the original SaGa 3 being a SaGa game in name only.

In the games that I've played (RS2, RS3, Unlimited and Last Remnant), it seems that unless you already know what you're doing, those sidequests are anything but optional. Perhaps I didn't mind it so much with RS2, because I had more choice in how things played out.
It is interesting that people usually recommend RS3 as a beginner entry into the series. If I followed that advice and didn't jump into RS2 first, I don't think I would have been nearly as eager to try other entries in the series. That being said, I do love my experience with the series overall, enough to confidently say that Unlimited has become my favorite jrpg despite currently only playing through it twice.

Oh well, there's some other side-quests I can do, but I was hoping to do those on a different playthrough rather than doing everything I can find on a single run.

I get what you mean to an extent, its either that you get lucky with sparking some amazing endgame techs on some overpowered enemy that you weren't supposed to run into, or you desperately scrounge for essential gear (Ice Sword etc.) in every side quest available while hoping to spark said techs in the process. Definitely tedious to do on several playthroughs unless you're rocking NG+ on the enhanced port.

The grind is there but just not in a traditional "slowly beef up your stats" sense. A shame because the way the game is MEANT to be played is that you're supposed to get some of these killer moves as you play naturally, but its entirely possible to just coast by with mediocre techs. With my first playthrough as Julian, I was stuck with Ellen's Dynamic Chop as my ONLY good tech across several weapons for a good 3/4ths of the game, giving me a harder time than intended.

I think it even ruined Last Remnant for me to an extent. I grew to hate the dungeon crawling and city traversal when a menu and some nice art would be so much quicker and just as effective with immersion. >> No.6022743

TLR is actually the SaGa game with the worst battle rank shenanigans, but MS would be a close second with all it's missable content if there wasn't actually a huge buffer making you fight hundreds of monster icons before you reach the rank that unlocks the final quest.

RS2 doesn't really even punish you for grinding unless you intentionally don't train magic and squander your efforts to train weapon skills on purpose. You can pretty much steamroll the entire game by using any single spellschool on every character and literally nothing else.

by that token, RS3 and SF are actually harder than RS2, though SF2 is harder still and is probably the one most likely to make you dump your save file and start over

My Undine, who had Genbu/Water and Lunar/Moon magic leveled fairly well, suddenly has Fire Magic leveled instead of Moon for some reason while grinding the final dungeon.

Squall is missing from the main menu (replaced by Air Slash) yet is still usable in combat. Also despite that its her Moon magic rank that's missing rather than Water/Genbu.

Given how esoteric SaGa is, I genuinely can't tell if this is a bug or some super secret, unexplained mechanic.

There are a few things I dislike, the encounter rate is way too high especially inside those places where you have to go back and forth to complete the quests. Also some things about the story and setting are not very clear, I keep meeting those elemental gods or whatever that I can choose to kill and I can easily do that but I don't know what the impact on the future events would be so I'm being cautious and I'm doing whatever they ask me to do.

Noob question: I'm trying to use most of my strongest moves as soon as possible, and yet when I go commander mode and everyone hits with their normal attacks they glimmer moves left and right.

you're doing it wrong, commander mode has no effect on the ability to glimmer techniques aside from the ability to survive difficult boss battles with high ranked enemies. Shit, this means it's better if I stick to the initial techniques for a good while before I just jump in the new one. And here I thought that I should focus on the ones that are red first until I learn them.
Also, I made an additional mistake and removed the skills from those who learned them and now I don't even know what works on who. Live and learn, I suppose.

You should use a variety of techniques at all times, sticking to what's most efficient during random battles and testing out different attacks when you fight an enemy that's stronger than others you've faced before. Try also to keep note of how you glimmered a technique during a boss battle in case you die and lose it.

Unless you train magic and weapons on everyone or only use cheap attacks you'll run out of WP during major battles, so using lower level techs to open new trees is somewhat inevitable.

Though keep in mind while I call it a tree no individual chain of abilities is longer than 3-4 different techniques.

Not that other anon, but I agree in that P5 isn't that great of a game. It improves on a lot of things from the previous 2 entries, which can't be ignored, but in the end it still feels like two different games sewn together. I get that the dungeon crawling and social sim elements are supposed to influence each other, but both they ultimately feel shallow because so much focus is split between these two different experiences. I always say I'd prefer if they just went all in on the social side and work from that. Otherwise, the social elements are just distractions and annoyances from what I really want to do: dungeon crawl. And it halts your progress constantly.
But this is a SaGa thread, not a P5 thread, and I don't want to be off topic too much more. I would think people in these SaGa threads typically wouldn't like later persona games because of that constant pulling away from progressing in the actual dungeon crawl gameplay for story that honestly shouldn't be anything more than a backdrop. Sure, you could say that social links remedy that to an extent with the feeling of build progression, but that's more of a band aid on the problem than an actual solution.

In 3 I keep getting walled off by bosses or lose track of what I'm doing. Doesn't help that it's impossible to know which character will be good at doing what unless you look up a guide. This wasn't as big an issue in 2 because your party was constantly changing, but in this one it seems pretty static so you have to really hope you're doing things right. Judging from the thread I either had to buy all the 10k spells and test + reload save before investing my money, or just grind the minigame. I also never managed to pull off any fusion spell I found in a scroll because it requires 3 spellcasters and I barely use magic with 2.

Like did you not play Digital Devil Saga and Nocturne and Strange Journey and SMT4

like do you seriously need -more- dungeon crawling?

The point of P5 is to either chill out on casual mode or crank up the difficulty and enjoy the full blast economic nightmare of managing time and other resources to actually get your party through that dungeon, the first 3 or 4 hours of RS3 are about running around making connections and earning cash, how can you criticize P5 when it's nothing if not a more robust and intricate version of that skillfully distributed throughout the game into a tasty feedback loop.

You basically have to hate anime to dislike P5 which is not really valid as a criticism when the rest of the series answers that matter of personal taste just fine

I don't get what this same fagging is for. The datamined game mechanics (supposedly) don't lie. Some techs require other techs to spark instead of just punching or using normal attack.

Unless you're using Ellen as MC, there's really no reason to have Ellen on your team. Herman/Black is the best Ax user, though turning him into Black can be tricky since his grandpa form dies easily. Magic is crappy for endgame since the attack spells are only dependent on INT, and very few characters have high INT. INT increasing equips also tend to have low physical defence. You'll still want at least one good mage for healing. Support spells are more useful.

Swords, Spears and Ax deal the best damage in endgame, with the best (or second best) weapons.

So "there's no reason to use Ellen" yet you acknowledge that Boston, who can only be acquired about a third of the way through the game, has a built in armor that is bad for the final third of the game. So for the first third of the game, and the last third, Ellen is either the only option or the better option unless you want to literally exploit a bug that makes the spark list entirely irrelevant.

The more I play RS3 (on my 2nd playthrough, almost done) the less satisfied I am with it in comparison with RS2. I feel that the team building and combat element is a lot weaker here. Magic feels crippled and not as exciting and some of the weapons feel pointless (Short Sword, Bow). They are weaker in damage but supposed to make up it with the status effects but status effects aren't as effective anymore, and while they can do decent damage at the end game, even enough to beat the game, they don't serve any purpose in terms of choice. Why do so many people say this is the best one? Is it because it's easier? It's still an excellent game, but it is in no way the best of the bunch, or even second or third.
