I'm not a newfag and I'm certainly not a zoomer. But I might retarded, and that's why I'm posting this question here despite any shit I might get for it.

Where is it safe to even download Nintendo ROMs in this day and age? I used to have so many NES, SNES, Game Boy, and N64 ROMs, but several hard drive crashes and new computers later I don't really have anything anymore and have wanted to rebuild my collection for some time. The problem is, over the last couple of years Nintendo been has hitting ROM sites like LoveROMs and forcing them to remove Nintendo content/shut down, and the last time I tried to torrent a Nintendo system game (6th gen) my ISP disabled my internet without warning and would not reconnect it until I asked them to, then warned me that next time there would be a $100 reconnection fee.

So as a retro Nintendo fan trying to get back into emulation after years of staying away from it, how can I go about doing so without getting screwed by my ISP? What do I have to do, get behind a VPN?

Don't download any exe files. Don't trust anyone that tries to give you a download app. Just know the difference between a rom file and an executable. If you can't tell the difference between an executable and everything else, then you have no business on the internet.

This guy >>6006608 is right on the money. It's not your ISP that's spying on you it's the actual software publishers or their agents. When you torrent, you participate in an automated community all of who's IP addresses are shared with one another so it's a simple matter for anybody to get the IPs of anybody who's downloading a specific torrent and then they send a threatening cease & desist order to the ISP which under current law they're obligated to "act on". In the case of a small ISP like yours they can't afford to go to court so they actually hit you with serious repercussions. Big ISPs just send you this form email. Spectrum actually just got dragged to court recently over not doing enough to punish pirates and they won which is good for pirates

>>6006549

Hardy-har har. No, although I was getting sick enough of receiving them (my count got up to 11, got two different ones about Tekken 7 - they even redirected me to a site where I had to click that I acknowledged the warning before I got internet access back) that I learned how to use JDownloader effectively though I still haven't decided which file hoster(s) I actually want to pay for access to if I want to at all. With a little finesse I can get good speeds without any accounts and it seems like a paper trail. I should really buy a couple bitcoins.

I personally don't use a VPN and just try to keep my internet activity within the realm of plausible legality but if someone is really worried about what they're up up to a VPN is definitely better than nothing. Hackers targeting VPNs are much more likely to be state-sponsored intelligence agencies looking for data of actual value not what video games some dork is downloading.

I just use i2p. It's like torrenting with a VPN built in. There are some ROM torrents available, and your ISP can't detect it. I've been using it for a while and haven't gotten a single notification from them.

Only downsides are it's a little slower and selection is a little more limited, but it's still increasing in popularity.
