He's in a badly written game. Aeris-Tifa-Cloud became Quistis-Rinoa-Squal for the uninspired sequel, which is why Quistis suddenly out of nowhere loves Squal and then it's never brought up again. Her design evokes Aeris, but her personality is totally different. Blonde haired, pink clothing, part of a love triangle. Sorta. But that one goes nowhere.
