Welcome funtographers! This thread is for Game Boy Camera discussion and photography. It's been quite a while since the last thread-- have you taken any new photos? Do you know any sick techniques? Just curious? Come on in.
In previous threads about the GBCamera, there were plenty of questions about various Game Boy models, photo digitization, save file emulation etc. So, I'd like to generally invite discussion about Game Boy hardware & accessories into this thread.
In my case I use a dslr to take picture of my Pocket's lcd (the top half of the Pocket's case is removed). These old-school LCDs with shiny bottoms are designed to reflect a source of light into the eye, which makes glare an issue on the dslr. I use a diffused incandescent bulb to reflect light off glossy paper, onto the screen. Overall my solution is inconsistent and pretty shitty but hey no worries we're anonymous here.

Love these threads, thanks OP. I need to start taking pics again, I haven't really done anything since I moved last year. I'm ordering a new GB Boy Colour (they're great for taking pics with a backlit screen on the cheap, but they are chinese crap and my last one broke after about a year) soon, and then am probably going to get a GB Pocket with one of the new chinese IPS backlit screens after that. Here's my over-posted but 2nd best shot; the Boston skyline. Just a plain GB Camera and a GB Boy Colour in what I think was late summer a year or two ago.

Many ways. You can dump the SRAM with a cart reader, you can use a comical assortment of an ancient flash card with a Mega Memory Card to pull the SRAM fro the camera, dump that to the flash cart, and then pull it from there. There's also at least two "printer emulators" on the market, that just let the GB "print" directly to BMPs on an SD card, which is how I get my shots for the most part. I saved my childhood shots by dumping the SRAM like pic related, but >>6002283 was printed with a printer emulator. If you just dump the SRAM you don't get the borders, which some folks may or may not prefer, not that you couldn't crop them out anyway.

OP here, I digitize all my photos with a Game Boy Printer emulator called a "Bitboy." It spits out whatever would be sent to the Printer into a BMP (pic related but a BMP file). I think these raw BMPs look great except they should be scaled up. That said, when there's a pic I really like, I go through the trouble of capturing it on the real LCD, cuz it looks cool.
If you want to digitize photos, don't buy a Bitboy. It works perfectly, but there are much cheaper alternatives and the Game Boy modding scene is growing all the time.

I only have one other pic of the Color, sorry for all the dust. I don't personally prefer the Color's LCD for two reasons: it draws a "screen door" across a white background, and its grays are too strongly delineated for my tastes. The adjustable contrast and natural ghosting of the Pocket's lcd can even out dithering (in best case scenarios).

If you want my 2 cents I think you should buy a chinese drop-in LCD for whatever game boy you already own. The GB Boy is a decent solution but man oh man is that aspect ratio suspect. A GB Boy costs around the same as a drop-in LCD these days right?
I modded my pocket to put a backlight behind the original LCD. I seriously hope you guys don't do this. The results were good but not better than drop-in LCDs, and it was a risky pain in the ass to do.

As promised, here's some highlights from Amsterdam. I put them into a sort of collage this time, so as not to clog up the thread too much. Descriptions are left to right, top to bottom:

1. Typical Amsterdam housing. Most of the (very narrow) houses feature ornamental brickwork. These 4 had some features in white brick, which makes the details stand out a little better on the b/w picture. Sightseeing boat in the foreground.

2. The Rijksmuseum, which is the countries national museum, covering both history and the arts. Sadly, no time for this one!

3. Sculpture of a woman's head near Dam square.

4. A spoopy skeleton. Actually, no photography allowed in the Van Gogh museum, but I pulled a little sneaky for you guys.

5. View down the Prinsengracht, one of the many waterways that criss-cross through the city. Tower of the Westerkerk church in the distance.

6. The house where Anne Frank (and of course 7 others, only one of which survived the holocaust) stayed in hiding for over two years. It's actually the rather unassuming building half covered by the tree - go figure...
There's people lined up on the curb to take pictures. (Also, Sightseeing boat strikes again!)

7. A crane resting on one of the many small boats lining the canals. In the background, roadside cars and more boats reflected in the calm water.

8. A sculpture of an enormous mirroring cube on the museum square.

9. People playing chess in the street with a giant chess set.

I use a set of magnetic lenses. Those 2 shots were taken through the "2x telephoto" lens, which results in the vignette effect, but also helps bring out some smaller details.
