It'll probably go back to normal once gaming and "geek culture" ceases to be a fad.

On the plus side it seems like mom and pop stores are doing better these days, so there's that.

I have 9 craig's list ads for garage sales written down for tomorrow and Saturday, and I'm sure I'm going to see more just driving around.

Though, I do only have about $100 to spend, I'm hoping to find some good deals. A couple ads even listed that they will have video games, so here's hoping.

I did get started early today though, I found a N64 rumble pack at the good will for $2, no battery cover, but it works.

I was talking to the owner of my favorite local shop the other day, and he said pricing is a really tough balancing act. If he prices things what he thinks is fair (read, too low), then his stock will be cleared out, and he'll have nothing good to bring in customers. If he prices things too high, no one will buy his stock.

He generally strikes a very good balance, though, with things being below eBay madness prices, and just around fair market value. Some things are a little high ($75 for a Turbografx 16 comes to mind) but for the most part he strikes the balance well.

Up north we are having this hilarious breaking point where people scavenge in garage sales for those rare games only to discover that with no demand they cant do shit.
I work at a vintage game store and we get piles of people that are off loading games and systems that they thought they could get tons for but are getting next nothing in terms of what they spent vs what they get. Same boat here. Except there is a giant flea market in my town tomorrow.

I don't know if I am going to find good deals or if it will be all a bunch of sellers that mark prices based off what they see online.

I had my entire N64 collection at my buddies house when his house was completely submerged during a flood in 97.

I used a dryer on the games and good majority of them worked afterwards. And we are talking about a week of total submersion in disgusting river water.

Speaking of vinyl--
The vast majority of vinyl are effectively shovelware. They sit in stores for months, sometimes years on end. Plenty of places will sell full rock albums, whatever for 25 or 50c each if it's not somehow special. Vinyl is only valuable if what you have is somehow rare or valuable in a notable way. People find Patsy Cline records from estate sales and think they're like $20+ each simply because they're a little old.

Gah I'm just rambling now.

I have pretty much come at peace with the fact that I am no longer a hardcore collector of old retro games. I am tired of the prices.

I will still check flea markets and garage/rummage sales, but I am done making it a mission.

this and as a metalfag its pretty rough because metal is usually sought after. You can get awesome classic rock albums for 50 cents a piece because there are so many of them and no demand. Fucking god damn shitty metal has to be hipster and drive up shit I just want to listen to. I can't fucking stand metal fans as you can probably tell. Iron Maiden records shouldnt be worth shit but they are because metalfags are like the neckbeards of this board. So are these really the faggots who are willing to pay $20.00 for mario/duck hunt these days?

If that's the case, then I don't think I'm ever going to be able to open a game store. I wouldn't be able to stop myself from punching all my customers square in the face.

What about you /vr/? Anyone here sell games & have similar stories about today's retro gaming youth? I've heard s many stories of kids buying games just to have and brag about on face book that don't even own the systems they go to.

It has but for different reasons.

Oklahomafag here as well, I have come up completely dry. I go to one of the state's bigger flea markets every Sunday morning and I have literally found nothing younger than PS1 and every single game I have seen there was sports/rhythm/racing. And an original XBox with no cords or controllers and a grungy-ass PS1 controller that I don't know how to clean.

Local good will and garage sales don't have anything either. This might be one of the worst areas in the country to be a collector - I am not sure.

music is too subjective to make a statement like that. My grade 7 self would have agreed but now I just think they are shitty lighter waving stadium rock crap and the 08 tour sucked. I like shitty fucking music according to most people though but thats alright with me because it makes me happy. (Tobal No. 1, Mario Kart 64 and Mortal Kombat Trilogy, FYI. Also got Dino Crisis 3, but I don't feel like bragging about that for some reason...)

Good, cheap retro games are out there OP, you just can't expect to make the absolute best finds every time. 90% of my retro finds are just random games, but I get them anyway because I have a lot of consoles and my tastes are extremely varied.

If you're going out expecting to find copies of really popular or rare games for low, low prices, then you need a lot of luck on your side.

I go on amazon from time to time, prices are pretty fair on there, as you have everyone undercutting each other.

Other times I go to the local retro shop near my work. He can be as much as $10 over what I normally see, but most of the time it's no more than 5 bucks or so, and after shipping, it's really not a big deal to me.

When you hope up your retro video game store, how are you going to do the pricing? Are you going to go full merchant or are you going to price them fairly even knowing some guy might come in and try to sell it for triple on ebay?

>> No.602407

>>602374

To me, I find that fair pricing for a shop is a few dollars higher than the average amazon/ebay price. It compensates for shipping costs, and an extra buck or two for the shop. So if a game is $10 online, I don't fret over spending up to $15 in a store, since I'm going to pay about $5 for shipping anyways. That's the price of instant-gratification.
