Being a child and part of a world in which Pokemon was more real than a game was something else: the advertisements, the rumors going around, buying the Nintendo monthly just for the Pokemon supplement.

Now I wonder what made the game as popular. The monster design? The feeling around exploring the world in search of Pokemon?

Shin Megami Tensei is inferior mechanically to Pokemon and has no appeal as a pet simulator at all, which is where a large part of Pokemon's appeal comes from. The reason why Persona does better than SMT is because, like Pokemon, it has value for self-insertion into an attractive world, where SMT does not.

I don't have too much to add other than I really like the games, and Gen 1 competitive battling is hilariously broken and ridiculous, but it makes me love it more.

I also hate that people constantly shill Crystal Clear as being a definitive experience. It's just more embarrassing self insert wish fulfillment on the behalf of the author. Everything Crystal Clear does well is in spite of the main "developer".

>Those both look lame as hell
because they weren't made to be intricate
one is a bipedal shrimp in samurai armor, and the other is a black and red mole with serrated razors on its body that form a drill when it curls into a ball.
The negligence of making chimeras that resemble creatures more unfamiliar than familiar, and being subtle with human inspirations, started fading out in Unova designs.

It's cool but it's more monstrous than pandering.

No, it's too goofy, like the whole line is.

you're not giving them enough credit; GameFreak used to fool us very well into thinking that Pokemon were one-to-one with real life creatures, but if you look at Walrein for example, you realize it is not bald nor is its body very long, both traits of walrus, and that there was another source of inspo or else they took creative liberties with the design

it's not actually a generic walrus at all, but it feels that way and that's something somewhat intriguing; many of the mundane mons of the early gens are actually not straight-up copies of real life animals

I agree wholeheartedly. But I think it had to do with how it and Electrike were drawn.
But according to your standard, I think, you should be inclined to say Sinnoh had designs on par with or better than Kanto and Johto's---you have Garchomp and Abomasnow that are serious and will wreak havoc menacingly; far less light-hearted than most of Kanto with few exceptions like Gyarados.

Anyway, I'm just pushing back because I'm trying to suss out what standard other people are using when they say this design is bad or this one is great---see how solid the rubric is.

There's a lot of details in these pictures that I don't think would fit on an SNES cart, and I think there might be a few too many colors between all these images, but the idea is so well illustrated in these. Pokemon Red came out the same year as the N64 though, and I doubt GameFreak had any delusions of making a console version for their hot new IP on a soon-to-be-dated piece of hardware.

It was a game on an inexpensive video gane system that appealed to the still prevalent "collect all 'x' of 'y'!" marketing strategy that also promoted the idea that everyone was free to play it and that all of your favorites were equally cool and usable. Mix in the fact that all the big toy-focused franchises from the 80s had finally taken a breather and you had something that was genuinely unique poised to take the world by storm.

Based. I love a lot of modern and retro games alike but one place where I'm a filthy nostalgiafag and proud of it is Pokemon.
Especially now that they're deadset on gutting all content and features from every new release. It's poetic that Gen II was such a massive addition and improvement over Gen I, and the remakes of Gen II have now become the peak of massive amounts of content and features as every release after them has removed shit or gone one step forward and two steps back.
They literally just take advantage of Pokemon selling itself now and can get away with anything. I've never felt more comfortable going backwards in a gaming franchise before.

>tfw Game Freak could make a sprite based MMO Pokemon game in this retro style with every 'mon cross playable on PC, Mobile, and Nintendo Switch with relative ease, and update it regularly (the developers would just have to make more 2d sprites, backdrops, events, items, characters and locations. I know that it's a lot of work but it's a fraction of the work a 3d Pokemon mmo would be.)

The popularity of games like Minecraft proves that, young and old, people don't mind blocky graphics in their games. They could make a dream Pokemon game that would run effortlessly and easily become the highest grossing game ever what with in game purchases since making the game free to play would probably be the most profitable model. It would probably be the most profitable game relative to how easy it was to make ever, considering that most of the work is done for them, the Pokemon, gameplay style, types, moves, regions and general system is already there for them. I'm sure there's talk about a Pokemon MMO but as we all know Game Freak and Nintendo are mind-numbingly autistic when it comes to everything, but particularly blatantly profitable ideas that enter the realm of the internet and are frequently associated with fan-created content. Plus I still really believe that they're anti RPG in general from the Hiroshi Yamauchi days. Oh, well. Biggest blunder and loss of money ever in video games that you never hear about.

GBC has really good color palette. And Pocket Monsters got a lot of leeway from being a Gameboy game at first ,meaning its fine if sprites are Black and White if they don't need the extra artistic value.
The end result is that the Pokemon gets A LOT of good shades and dithering, on top of a lot of really good poses.

Had they been more sensible, they would have kept more of the stronger palette for Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald, since full palette range isn't as appealing as a really good palette.

I like Gen 5 but everything after has been worse than everything that came before. Gen 6 was bad, Gen 7 was worse, and I don't understand how QA allowed Gen 8 to happen just kidding we all know there's no QA at Game Freak because that would require spending money to make a better product.
Ever since pic I knew Pokémon probably wasn't going to ever get better, though I didn't expect it to get as bad as it is now.

Missingno. does corrupt your save data; upon meeting it, it specifically it corrupts the Hall of Fame, which nobody gives a shit about (and if you do all your duplication before beating the HoF then even that's fine). I wish Game Freak would've released a good looking GBA game, and not the fugly piece of shit that was the third generation.

For me at least was a mixture of the world and monster designs, besides the anime.
It was such a fresh concept at the time, going on an adventure with your cool pet with super powers. That was the dream of every child. The curiosity of seeing the rest of the monsters and what they could do was also a factor.
As someone who didn't like RPGs, Pokemon definitely hooked me up with the fact that it was recreating the anime. Capturing and training mons was exciting.
In retrospective they're not great RPGs, the stories are basic, the game was made for bruteforcing it, but the same simplicity is what made it so addictive and replayable I guess.

No, you stupid cunt. I love the setting of Pokemon.
But they don't make use of status at all as an important part of the gameplay. Everything can be solved with spamming the weakness against the enemy with your regular mon. There's barely any need for strategy. The dungeons are also mediocre for the most part.
The only great part of the gameplay, besides the mons themselves, is the meta. But the storymode is weak, gameplay wise.

idk about what made it so popular in japan, but in the US Tamagotchi & other virtual pets were popular around the same time (at least at my school). Then Digimon came out and you could fight them. Pokemon just took it ten steps further, and I was super excited about it. Having over a hundred different monsters that you have to find in a huge world, so cool. I'm 34 now and I've tried getting back into both retro and modern pokemon, but I never play more than 20-30 minutes, just can't get into like I used to

You may not notice this, but the "romhack" images that have been posted are 1) a much higher resolution than a typical screenshot and 2) are difficult to see on a gameboy and would not work when in motion blur. You have a lot to learn about artistic design and functional graphic design. There's a reason realistic paintings are not considered art anymore. Stop falsley assuming people are not talented, and you will learn a lot more.

While this is neat, my principal complaint with subsequent generations was moreso that the designs became increasingly arcane. In Gen I you have very few Pokemon that aren’t a sly reference to a real-life thing, now we have these completely fantasy-based amorphous blobs and other way overcooked designs.

Gen III also had, seemingly more than any other generation, these Pokemon that were like, Walmart off-brands of previous Mons, like Seviper. They either were trying really hard to make people believe it was a new region and/or thought we hated how Johto recycled a lot of Kanto Mons.

Not that Gen II didn’t have a few of these, Tyranitar was sort of lame for example.

After spending some time thinking about it, I have to say now that I strongly prefer Digivolution to Evolution

3 forms wasn't enough and ultimately it just encouraged everyone making a Pokemon design to think of the actual final evolution they *really* wanted to make, and then just make its pre-evolutions smaller, gimped versions of it. There aren't that many evolutionary lines that avoid this trap, specifically "It gets bigger/multiplied".

On the other hand, Digiviolution offers up a longer progression that at the same time has many branches, which allows a degree of partner customization that Pokemon usually lacks. I've been doing some mock-up digivolutions for Pokemon and it has been terribly interesting visualizing the potential.

The game was designed to be a sequel to Gen 1 and for the new Pokemon to be an addition, not the focus. You'd get new ones here or there but plenty of them were reserved so players could find exciting new Pokemon throughout the game and into the postgame.
Starting in Gen 3 it changed to where new Pokemon were the norm and old Pokemon were uncommon or postgame only. People nowadays look back at Gen 2 like it made a mistake and is flawed, but it's just a different way of approaching the issue of how to handle new Pokemon. It isn't flawed, or at least it's not flawed for that reason.
Also, back in those days players were expected to use Pokemon in Pokemon Stadium 2, giving use to postgame mons since plenty of them were useful in that game. Also, competitive battling.

You kind of hung a little bit too much on every word of my post here.

I wasn't thinking of Gulpin, though that is literally an amorphous blob, yes. I think the worst offenders tend to be the legendaries, which is a problem compounded by them often being the focus of the game now and being emblazoned on the box art.

I mean, come on, look at this thing. What the FUCK am I looking at? And don't give me the "outer space" excuse, you can't just make up some random shit with spheres, ovals, and half-moons and say it's related to something celestial.

Another problem is the rash of two-legged anthropomorphic donutsteels with disgusting color schemes. Now I don't begrudge them for this because kids eat this shit up, but Lucario is complete ass. Or like, Zoroark? Even the Bulbapedia article is like, "uhhhh it might be a fox, or a kitsune? or no, a werewolf. and it has kabuki makeup, yeah..."

>would you consider Ludicolo overcooked?
No, this is a clever design, and it's implemented well into gameplay.

>this is just a stupid thing to say; so because a previous generation had a snake, anyone coming after is a ripoff of it, huh?
Frankly, yes. Seviper isn't meaningfully different from Ekans/Arbok. Sure one's a viper and one's a cobra, but in terms of gameplay relevance this isn't that important of a distinction. There are non-poisonous snakes they could have gone with that would even have logical typings. Grass, water, ground, even fire or the weirder types would fit in with mythological snakes.

Because anything trying to copy Pokemon will just be seen as a Pokemon copy. AFAIK, Pokemon was the first of its kind. The mechanics aren't super unique among JRPGs, but the monster-collecting angle was new (and of course, helped to make it marketable since there were so many characters to sell toys and cards of).

I wonder if it's even possible to create such a massive cultural phenomenon right now. When Pokemon was new, video games weren't nearly as popular. So there were more empty niches to fill, and less competition.

Heavily flawed game, except, many of the rest share its same flaws or are worse in some regards or others. Definitely would not put it in a top JRPGs of all time list unless the rest of the candidates were garbage, which considering the conventions of the genre, is a high probability.
