From what I've seen the biggest differences are the color palette being smaller, for instance the girl's hair being a dark green in the MD/GEN version and it being more of an actual black in the modern release.
The BGM and SE in the options menu for the MD/GEN version has actual titles "Area_1_Perimeter" vs being simply numbered like "01" for Xbox and I'm assuming the other releases too.
Also the Xbox version has issues with the songs not looping like they should in the options menu.

Why did this happen?

I get that the Commodore 64 was the most popular computer ever, but the ZX Spectrum was only popular in a few places, same with the Amiga that was mostly an European thing, the MSX was popular in Japan but the homebrew games don't seem to be made there.

Either that or no one talks about japanese homebrew games, either way, computers tend to have more homebrews than consoles and that scene has been around for decades.

It's a twin-stick shooter, Smash TV is a great game, lots of games like it have been reasonably popular enough to make a profit showing that, shocker of all shockers, people who are fans of one kind of game want to play more than one game of it, they don't want to play only Smash TV for years and years.

And these kind of games are fun, even "artsy" video game designers like them, Yoko Taro, known for Drakengard and Nier, likes this kind of game and in an interview randomly decided to talk about Nex Machina and how awesome and addictive it was, and how he hoped people would buy it and play it.

This guy who makes games that are mostly just known for their dark depressing stories just randomly likes simple arcade games as well...because when they are done well they are a lot of fun and addictive.

Though Nex Machina is a game that failed so badly that the developer decided to never make arcade games again, not even Yoko Taro could save that game.

>There are people doing way more than you for nothing.
This could be said of many if not most jobs, that's not an argument at all. They are either exceptionally charitable people, or they are being severely exploited. You can't devalue someone's work with that kind of idiotic reasoning.

I agree with your general sentiment that art is more beneficial when it's free especially now when there are many ways to get projects without a direct exchange, but you do come off as a dense tit who's trying really hard to justify your own entitled attitude and behavior.

I know, even more so because they started with making arcade style games, since 1993 in fact, with Stardust that was based on Asteroids but a faster more insane version, arcade-like or inspired games was part of their DNA.

But i guess the last few games didn't sell well, Resogun wasn't talked about much, not many people paid attention to Stardust and when Nex Machina came around, it also wasn't mentioned much, so you get the end result of the developer just abandoning arcade style games.

Meaning no Nex Machina 2 will ever be a thing.

I'd pay for a PC version if:
- it kept getting updated.
- first boss wasn't so fucking rape. Tiny space to move, enemies on your ass and you're meant to avoid 3 way/multiway on hard shots too? Other bosses aren't half as hard.
- Make enemy bullets stand out. Half the time i'm getting hit cus I don't notice.
- Limited ammo in a fucking shooting game? It's an interesting gameplay element in a roombased shooter and sorta works but just getting to the ammo entirely defenseless is retarded. The knife is choosy when it works or not.

I like the rest and it's well produced despite lacking content. Just feels like a beta of an indie game that gets much better with updates.

Shovel Knight and Freedom Planet are made by artists and designers, and whose programmers only skillset is to use an existing game engine and click to add functions. Two options: 3 button where you start shooting in the direction you are looking and it "locks" until you let up or the default; using X, Y, A, B as Left, Up, Down, Right. Problem is these buttons are angled and different sizes, it doesn't come naturally at all.

Not really the developers fault; the genesis controller not good for twin stick shooters.

I honestly liked Tanglewood on MD and I played about 1/4 of it so far. I guess it wasn't completely complete in terms of features but it's honestly not that bad. Its 'emptiness' adds to its mood/atmosphere imo. I liked the art style too.

>all of that shit in pic related
Why. That's overkill.

The only versions you need should be:
- Sega Master System version, by Sega/SIMS (there's a Game Gear prototype with a censored cutscene but it's no big deal)
- Sega Genesis version, by Virgin (the best version of that game - DOS version has lower horizontal resolution because of the slowdown, music is atrocious MIDI instruments and missing all track variations and the vocal version of the theme is horrible AND it has that shit proto-DRM "look up page X in the manual", and the other ports stink)
- Super Nintendo version, by Capcom (again the best version of that game. GBA added new languages but they're not worth it, the original is already Multi 4+JP)
- Nasira's Revenge

Maybe add the CES Proto, or this new "Final Cut" (takes content held back from the original and meant for a Sega CD version that was never completed, and so will never happen)
The bootlegs are worthless. Even the "better ones" cut content.

I...really don't even think about if it's a programmer exercise or not, as long as the game looks good or people whose taste i trust like it, i am fine with it.

Tanglewood never actually looked fun, though Xeno Crisis looks fun and Tanzer too.

I also don't really mind a game not actually looking like an old game if they don't say they were trying to look 100% exactly like a NES game or what not, a lot of the times they just say it's inspired and that's just fine, though i swear some people seem to get anger issues when they see a retro-looking game having effects or colors that would be impossible on older hardware.

I just played only first few areas of the final cut, because im on my break.
Got it from GOG.
The game is leaking memory or the rewind function is doing something funky and goes over 4GB for RAM and crashes after a while.
There are few expanded areas that should have been accessible in the first place so thats a major plus,I love it.
Bugs from the original are not fixed even if the advertisement says so,in the first level there is still a bug with a stuck Genie tail in the wall at the merchant stand, there is still clip out of bounds bug in the desert level so w/e.
Those are my first impressions, more later this evening.

this was never a problem for me,the game requires to be fast and execute actions confidently. and the game matches the original so there is that.
>is more like a babbymode romhack
the gog version allows setting infinite lives from the get go and in the game itself it has a (camera?)"tracking" option that you can set to classic or tight whatever that means i noticed no difference. No extra checkpoints,no need for it you can save anytime you want there is overlay menu option for that. You only get extended areas in most of the levels and thats pretty much it.

The point is that modern games that look old are spoiled by orders of magnitude faster processing power and significantly more intuitive development tools. If you want to make a game for the NES, SNES, or whatever, you need to write in some language that looks like alphabet soup, then you need to discover hardware quirks developers had to take advantage of to add rudimentary features the hardware never meant to support, and you need to optimize the code so that your 2mhz console doesn't slow down, and you can only fit 16 kilobytes of programming. That leaves very little room and time for design and art, and trying to explain how these old consoles worked to an artist would just make them quit. On a modern game, you don't need to worry about that at all so even if you have the most basic of programming knowledge you can make a game that actually works. Who cares if your DooM looking games needs an i7 to run smoothly?

3-button mode largely works, and being able to nudge your gun direction is nicely handled. It's still a pain since you can't re-aim properly after a roll.

True. The fact that they run on an older system doesn't change the fact that they are inevitably influenced by modern trends and culture.
Games that aren't actually old cannot be retro. They just don't actually represent the time period they claim to represent. It's not part of that culture, it's just parroting through modern lenses.
If these homebrew games were indie PC games, you would rightfully consider them not retro instead.

It's got a heavy use of small 8x8 sprites, and it does a far few things that look pretty "advanced" for an NES game.
your usual indieshit generally a: uses small sprites because they're easier to make than something say, Mario sized, and b: they don't really follow console limits terribly well

I'm not a professional programmer so this as you will - you are right to think that. Assembly will help you understand what's going on. It would help most when optimizing code and understanding why something will take up a lot of cpu speed or memory. At the very least it's interesting to know, to have a clue what is going on at the low level. There's so many debates on /vr/ alone that people would do so much better in if they had a little knowledge of assembly, for example it gives you a clear idea of how emulation works.

1st boss has no hit box, basically you can shoot the entire upper part of the screen to hurt him and you can touch him and roll into him without taking damage.

First phase is easy, just shoot and dodge his aimed spread shot. Once his minions come out you just have to use your roll iframes properly. Remember you can roll up into the boss and not take damage. Don't try to dodge in between his spread shot, just dodge the entire thing and his minions with one roll. It's really not that hard. I beat him without taking any damage on my 4th try.

King, don't worry about getting any of the games which are mentioned in my post here (unless you just really want a physical copy, that's cool, of course). You can play them for free, and I can try to give you even more, whatever I have that you request! Please focus on getting the games that haven't been shared here yet, such as mentioned in >>6003505 & >>6004581 >>6003705 & the latter two mentioned here >>6004367
We can help you dump them if you need help, too! (including Dux 1.5, Ghost Blade, Sturmwind, and Battle Crust, if that would be okay with you...)

You are genuinely based, and I thank you very much for your generosity and kindness (and smoking hot girl pics).

Very welcome! Yes, you will need special hardware. I'm subject to correction from other anons since I am not well-versed on this, myself, but this seems like a great deal for dumping almost every type of old cartridge game, plus you can play your games on them with it, so it might be a good investment anyway: https://m.ebay.com/itm/-/123941939420?ul_ref=https%3A%2F%2Frover.ebay.com%2Frover%2F1%2F711-53200-19255-0%2F1%3Fff3%3D4%26toolid%3D10001%26campid%3D5337257450%26customid%3DRetrogaming%2520Console%2520%257BVG%257D%2520%257Bfrom%2520DB%257D%26mpre%3Dhttps%253A%252F%252Fwww.ebay.com%252Fitm%252F-%252F123941939420%253Fnordt%253Dtrue%2526orig_cvip%253Dtrue%26srcrot%3D711-53200-19255-0%26rvr_id%3D2176726330598%26rvr_ts%3D596d86f716e0ad4eb9f6d4a3fff527df&_mwBanner=1&_rdt=1&ul_noapp=true
