PS2 might not be retro, but you can install Retroarch on it and play retro games.

Excellent choice. The best shmup for ps2. Gradius III and IV compilation is also nice. R-Type final is also good.

For run and guns Contra shattered soldier and Neo contra are both good games with good graphics.

Timesplitters 2 is the best multiplayer and single player FPS with a ton of content and it runs at 60fps which is rare for FPS games on PS2.

The PS2 has worse IPC clock per clock than a Raspberry Pi 1 yeah, this is an unfortunate fact. Even back in the day, the CPU was shit.

Consoles have historically always had bad CPUs, it didn't just start with Jaguar CPUs on PS4/Xbone.

If this had come out around even a decade ago it would have been quite cool. The PS2 homebrew scene always had so much promise and effort put into it, but the emulators in particular were abysmal, mainly due to the system just being way too slow.
When you're getting lapped by a shitty Raspberry Pi in performance it's time to give up.

Not memeing but why the hell would anyone do this? The thing can barely run Linux on their official Linux kit so why the fuck would I want to run open source emulators on proprietary hardware and software. Some games like GBS ones have filters to simulate the original colour pallette. I doubt these have been implemented on the PS2 retroarch.

Honestly with old consoles, I just use them for their library only. Anything fifth generation and below is PC for me since it's so much easier to tweak and customise.

>> No.5990982

I just use a ModBo and burn discs. I like having a folder of burned PS1 games, makes me feel like I'm still a leet haxxor in the 90's

>> No.5990987

>>5990982
It sucks that there's still no good way to use the PS1 hardware of the PS2 without just burning discs and swap-tricking it, at which point you may as well be using a PS1 anyway. Being able to run them from an HDD without POPStarter getting in the way would be a fantastic mix of accuracy, original hardware and convenience.

>> No.5990997

Swap tricks aren't necessary with a modchip. I still have my PS1 since there's a couple games that have issues, like Gradius Gaiden

>> No.5991012

>>5991006
True, but in that case you're still talking about a hardware mod and burnt discs. Hardly ideal, especially with how many PS2 disc drives are on the way out.
The PSIO is getting there, though still not as convenient as it would be if you could access the PS1 hardware of a PS2 from within the PS2's software.

>> No.5991276

>>5991012
>many PS2 disc drives are on the way out
I often hear this used in arguments but I've never heard of it happening. Even if a laser does go out, just replace it. It seems more like you're looking for the convenience of choosing games from a menu like you would on a PC.

>> No.5991285

>>5991012
The dvd laser going out isn’t really an issue. PS1 games play just fine and the ps2 games can be played off hard drive. I don’t think people understand that it only loses the ability to read dual layer DVDs but can read single layer and CDs fine

PS2 fats are pretty infamous for their disc drives dying long-term. There was even a lawsuit that SCEA lost back in '05 over it. You may not have personally encountered it, but that's like saying you never had a 360 red ring. Might be true, doesn't disprove the issue.
>>5991285
Tell that to the trouble my poor current unit has identifying anything in its DVD drive. It's slightly more reliable with CDs, but I'd still hesitate to call it 'reliable'.

>> No.5992583

>>5991919
It depends on if you want to use an old IDE drive or put in the extra work to get it playing nice with a SATA drive, and if you want to be able to actually plug your PS2 into your network.
There's official and unofficial 'network adapters', with only the official ones actually supporting networks. Both offer headers for an HDD. Official ones only ever had IDE on them, but reproductions have both IDE and SATA. There's also a third route you can take which is what I did, where you buy an official one, then replace the IDE header daughterboard with a third party SATA one to get the best of both worlds.
From there, I think the vast majority of SATA HDDs are considered reliable. There's lists of verified IDE ones you can find online which might be helpful, since it tends to be pickier.\

tl;dr: you need to decide your network adapter first if you want to go for the internal HDD path. Official IDE, official modified for SATA or knockoff IDE/SATA. And of course, make sure you've got a fat PS2. There's technically ways to do it with certain models of slim, but it's way too much work.

>> No.5992957

The PPU in the Cell was very bad.

It ran code worse than a Pentium 4 1.6Ghz CPU.

If you didn't want code to run as badly as a P4 at that clock rate, you had to split off code to the SPUs. And C code was unoptimized on them so most had to resort to ASM.

They really would have been better off just having a good quad core CPU design with good IPC per core. The entire '1 weak main CPU, 8 superfast vector CPUs' design was a wrong and time consuming one that ultimately was rejected in favor of the Jaguar APUs we see in the current gen consoles today.
