Yeah, it's honestly glorious. Yuna getting away is genuinely compelling and makes Fou-Lu's anger at the injustice of the world felt by the player. Obviously his plan is wrong, but unlike so many jrpgs,and just games, Fou-lu's anger against society ius genuinely understandable.

Who knows. It was a late gen PS1 game so I really don't see why they felt they would have too. It was only minor stuff that got cut and it's my fave BOF still but it really is distressing to know that it was changed even minutely.

I always feel the need to post this when the topic of BoFIV's localization comes up. In this tbread a guy compares the English and Japanese scripts side by side in an emulator, great read for any fan of the game.

Scias is essentially an alcoholic in the original game. Obviously censored because reasons, but because of this the localization in short never replaced that personality with something else. instead its that he stutters, instead of slurring like a drunk, which leads many to a perception "well alright thats scias i guess". fun fact scias' character pays homage to SO1's Cius/Cyus Warren and SO2's Dias Flac, in both name, fighting style, and cold personality of a tougher swordsman that use draw-out samurai styles in their technique.

Scias was drunk all the time. Im the English version he has a stutter. If you chat him up at camp he still has a lot to say about the war and stuff so it's not like he was neutered they replaced one speech idiom with a safer one.

More egregious though was the removal of a few scenes. Ill be fair and admit that they were mostly small sex jokes that don't really add to the story and where actually removed pretty cleanly. You wouldn't even notice they where there at all. Incidentally they all involve Ursula. One where Ryu cops a feel, one where she and Nina take a bath in a spring during that island bit and one where she drops her pants to call some sailors bluff which I've seen about 3 different translations of. I feel like the spring bit should have been left in becuase it was all from Ryu's POV and was mostly just Nina talking off screen about how stacked Urs is prompting Ryu to try and peek only to be met comically with gun fire.

There was also the death of the actual emperor which in the Japanese version was much more graphic. This change was not handled cleanly though. In the Japanese version Fou Lu straight up decapitates him. In US it does this weird fade that just looks off.

I won't say any of this KILLS the game but it's a huge bummer I can't really defend. I just think everything else makes up for it in spades. So be mindful.
