I heard those external scandoublers/flicker fixers do degrade video quality. Also, they can only do 16-bit colors, not the whole 24-bit range, which may get you a washed out or smudged image.
So maybe it's not worth it, even if you could get it to work with a console.

The Amiga had support for 3 buttons for mouse and joystick from the first model Amiga 1000. And of course you could use the keyboard for controls, which the majority of games did in addition to joystick controls.
Come to think of it, all early home computers could have just used keyboard controls. More buttons than you could ever need.
There is no "you cannot" or "crippled", there is just "they didn't" for some fucking reason.

A common sentiment here, and sadly a mindless one.
If you actually want to know whether you like a game or not, you have to try it for yourself.

It's not even that the gameplay is crap. Hands down the only really shitty thing is the completely outdated trial and error way of progressing.
You didn't get an item or key or weapon before going further? Then you are fucked and cannot continue. Often you cannot backtrack. So either you pick up everything in the right order or you just die.
The basic mechanics of punching and kicking monsters in the face are fine.
Seriously, this game would be so easy to remaster. Just remove all the no-return dead-ends and let the player explore and backtrack freely until you got all items you need to proceed. There, done.

As a kid I never really understood the Amiga - Atari ST animosities, I just went along with everyone else. Amiga user were elite, ST users were lamers.
A couple of years ago I bought an Atari ST with a nice Atari color monitor and... It's a damn fine machine. It's kinda weird that game music sounds terrible when compared to the Amiga, but at the same time its midi port is a fantastic feature for musicians. Yada yada yada we were wrong. Console wars are a waste of time.

Wars between computer systems seem especially stupid.
There is that story that one guy emulated the Amiga sound on the Atari ST to play tracker music. His code helped another programmer to develop a trick to get the Amiga sound from 4 voices to 7 voices.
Working together gets you more good stuff.

Exactly. It's a shame that today less ideas seem to be shared among developers. It's all intellectual property and technology secrets. Noone is coding to the bare metal anymore. Everything is just waiting for the next iteration of even faster Nvidias.

can someone give me the skinny on Amiga?
Whats the 'most common' model? (like how the c64 was the most popular of the 'plug n play' units)
What would you need for most of these games in the thread?
[grew up in the late 80s, early 90s but Amigas weren't common in aus where i lived]

>>5990536
Amiga 500 +512k memory expansion was the most common. It will run the games in this thread, but have quite a bit of slowdown in 3D games.
If you want to get into Amiga nowadays, go for emulation. Real hardware is not cheap, especially since you need extra stuff like a gotek and an IDE to flash memory and an upscaler, unless you want to get an original monitor.

I recommend an original Commodore or Philips monitor or a multisync vga CRT.

>thats a much better frame rate than i remember it for some reason. Maybe its because its not rendering any cars.
F1GP was frame locked to something feeble like 16fps (forget the exact figure) on the Amiga regardless of processor. However, there is a third party hack/editor for it called F1GPED that hacks the frame rate and makes it playable up to 25FPS on the Amiga bringing it up to parity with the PC version in that regard. That's probably what we're seeing here.

I remember ZX Spectrum games having really weird layouts compared to standard layouts these days...and from what i recall of keyboard layouts for many games, it's one of the rare things i genuinely believe modern games are much better at.

This indeed was only a problem of software developers (well, most devs, since there indeed were some games that supported at least a second button). The Amiga not only was very capable to use more then one button, later (with OS Version 3.1) came the lowlevel library which supported even more buttons, which I guess was done in preparation for the CD32 and it's controller.
