I got a laptop with Windows 10 and I bought the GOG version like other Anon said, game works fine out of the box.

I want to say that I played this game for the first time this October, and it was one hell of a spooky ride. I've been playing horror games for about 2 decades and haven't had nightmares because of them for ages. This game legitimately disturbed me. Everything is dark and corrupted, and even the somewhat corny NPCs have their moments, like when you ask Farnham the Drunk about the Butcher. His sobbing genuinely upset me. It's been long that I cared for the story and world that much.

That being said, the first time I played Diablo 2 I tossed the game after the first quest. "Go into this cave and kill 42/42 enemies, here's your obfuscate skill tree that doesn't make any sense to someone who doesn't have a degree in Mathematics and has played the game 3-4 times to know what is good and what sucks". Miss me with that gay shit, Blizzard. If I wanted to play World of Warcraft I'd do that.

Diablo 1 is fun because it is difficult on a normal playthrough. Diablo 2 is just a race to the finish line so you can begin the endless loot grind.

>> No.5987043

>>5983481
Diablo 1 is also my favorite of the series but I was not a fan of the power curve. At least while playing a sorcerer I found myself more than prepared for every obstacle from floor 10 onwards and had enough escape options to not worry about dying. Warrior is a little harder since you have less options. I also wish there was more punishment for dying since if you remember to save like any RPG player knows to do then there's not a lot of tension. Which is an issue for a game with horror themes.
Still, great music, great claustrophobic dungeon design, the narrative accomplishes exactly what it needs to. Not a fan of the loot lottery speed run direction the sequels seem to have went in. Despite their superior mechanics.

I agree fully. I like that D1 introduces immune normal enemies midway through the game rather than going all the way through normal an halfway through nightmare like in D2. In D1, the challenge is to beat the game. In D2, it's all about rushing to the end so you can endlessly loot treadmill.

I just played D1 recently for the first time.
I loved the simplicity better than what D2 was.
There were fewer monsters but that made them spookier. I liked the idea that here is a church holding a way down until you reach hell.
The lightning wall breaks the game. Diablos final level is weak aesthetically. The chest was definitely a great improvement thou all the items lying around makes the town look crappy.

Newfag to Diablo here, found out my shit PC can run Diablo 1, downloaded Hellfire because I thought it was simply Diablo but better, started a warrior run and I'm really enjoying the story and the gameplay, I've never played anything similar to this
That being said, what is the essential diference between regular Diablo and Hellfire? Is it merely more characters? Does the story change in any way?

>> No.5990652

>>5990643
Hellfire wasn't made by Blizz, for one, but Sierra. It gives you new class (Monk) and new dungeons with a new final boss. The problem is - they suck. Hellfire has nothing to do with Diablo's story, the dungeons don't fit thematically, new spells are lame and it all feels like a rushjob. You can play it if you want, but if you skip it nothing of value will be lost.

>> No.5990665

>>5990643
Hellfire was made by Synergistic Software, published by Sierra. It's uh, well, it is what it is. David Brevik hates it.
I can't call it awful, but I can't call it great either, it has some serious bugs (such as the unique droprate becoming infinitesimally tiny), so I would suggest you patch that.
Otherwise it adds one dungeon which feels slightly out of place with the game (fitting more with Diablo 2 actually), and one new dungeon which is, well, ok I guess. Music is nice.

Much of the new stuff it adds is from Diablo's beta (and that stuff is mostly all still in Diablo's .mpq archive, so it's not like they had to ask Blizzard North nicely for it), in that regard, the later Belzebub mod does a much better job using the beta assets.

I see, when I just downloaded Diablo and didn't know how to even enter the dungeon and start playing, I had merely watched an old video by som guy praising it as a great superior alternative to regular Diablo, maybe I should just download regular Diablo and start over there, perhaps there is a way to move my save files around to this one? It's not like I'd be losing much, I had barely gotten to level 9 and reached floor 5 or so, killed the Butcher in the stairs with a small bow, etc.

Yeah, you just need the diabdat.mpq, which Belzebub will detect if you have the Diablo disc in your drive. Optionally you can copy it into the Belzebub directory, which is recommended, because that means it doesn't have to stop to read from the disc to load stuff at times.
You got it on GOG, so you can just copy it from that directory as well.

I will say though that Belzebub is considerably different from the base game, I think it's worth playing that for a bit before, to get a feel for the original and also appreciate what it does differently.

He's a bit of a beginner's trap, if you go knock on his door the first time you get the quest, he's gonna split you down the middle, in honest combat anyway.

There's some tricks to abuse his AI, one is to trick him to go into the stairs as pictured, another is to lure him to a spot with bars and a door, and then slam the door shut on him while he's on the other side, where you can just twink him with a bow or whatever.

compare that to succs bailing as soon as I get within the same time zone and only stopping when they fuck up and run into a wall.

You have to pump DeX, and you cannot run so projectile enemies can be bothersome when they flee. You have to learn how to trap enemies without aggroing other enemies since if you play a no magic warrior you cannot clear up mobs easily. I often use a bow to plink off a few shots while the enemy tries to get close, anything with a faster attack speed or knock back can be useful as a warrior since his attack speed is slower than the Rogue here.

Oh shit I hadn't been on /vr/ before and didn't realize there was a Diablo general here. I just recently jumped back into Diablo 2 after not having played it since before the expansion pack came out (played it off and on since but probably only a few hours total during that period).

Playing a lightning sorc at the moment but no real idea what I'm doing anymore, and rune stuff confuses the fuck out of me. Just going around charged bolt-ing everything, lightning vs big mobs. Me and some friends are gonna start ladder characters after the next reset and so I gotta figure out what I'll run since they both suck at stuff (ones gonna play a whirlwind barb).

Eventually other classes become as fast as or faster than the sorceress. Ultimately you will want to spam Baal and/or Pits. I think Pits with a singer (warcry barb) can be insanely fast with sick gear. You dual-wield wizardspikes for extreme teleport, and destroy the boss packs with warcry. Then you have find item, which makes it superior to the sorceress. Lightning sorc is still pretty insane for baal runs, though.

Oftentimes I see 250/300 MF being mentioned as a number to aim for, but most guides and builds I see rarely have more than a Shaco, and maybe Enigma or Chains of Honour as items that give MF. Considering that the only thing you do in the game post killing Hell Baal is grinding of items, how much should you focus on MF, and how much on speed, and where are the best places to farm with lower MF?

Summonmancer is the easiest soloist in the game with insane safety and, with time, good AoE for clearing (thanks to hard points into Corpse Explosion).
Generally, for newbies, fullclearing the entire game is biased in favor of spellcasters, so Cold/Fire Sorceress, Trapsin and Lightning Fury Amazon (or a hybrid Lightning Fury Amazon with a backup skill like Frozen Arrow) are all a safe bet.
Holy Shock/Zeal Paladin is also rather straightforward if you'd rather go into melee but want to avoid most pitfalls of melee in this game.

Hellfire had a handful of cool things. The. Oils were a nice touch and let you keep buffing high end gear.

Reflect was a nice spell for melee characters and Warp was good for quality of life. Immolation was fun to spam with Nova to clear levels insanely fast since the sorcerer is broken if you dupe gold and can buy top spells .

The Hell 2 adds a ton of content and all of Hellfire. It's probably the best mod for all the assets.

It's a little grindy but not too bad. Multiplayer is grindy though. It makes team play exciting when bosses on any level can wipe your party but it also sucks having to replay levels because you can't afford potions and are getting raped by acid spitters.

It also turned off friendly fire which makes using a sorcerer a bit too easy. I always like how magic could rape enemies but also would kill your tank if you aimed poorly.

>> No.6007952

>>6006692
If you want to beat Hell using a melee character offline I'd just hack some top items in. You'll spend forever trying to get gear that makes melee playable.

That said, Steeldriver is all you really need to be a beast through the end of Nightmare.

If you want to beat Hell and not grind gear, a necromancer is pretty much the only build that can quickly clear things. Max skeletons and mastery then corpse explosion. Lay amp damage down and wipe the screen with CE.

Also take some points in revives. Bosses are the only real challenge because the game wipes corpses for Diablo and Baal. For them get tons of revives with crushing blow (Udars are good). Find a staff with teleport charges and stack your entire 50 man army next to Baal and watch his life drop.

Necromancers outclass everything else. Only problem is having to buy and recharge something with teleport

It's definitely harder than vanilla, but I never got stuck or had to restart.

I died trying the Butcher too early and then had a boss (every floor has 2-3 uniques, which are usually a battle) I couldn't beat. Turns out, I was forgetting that swords do 50% damage vs undead. Once I quick swapped to my mace I killed it fine.

Multiplayer is brutal though. You're having to replay a level or two every 3-4 levels to keep up with potions.

It makes you actually play together which is nice though. Every encounter is an actual battle. Our rouge was pulling using infravision. We had a game plan for tanks and where to put lightning walls to control the AI and split up goatmen packs.

Barbarian is probably the easiest to start with or rouge, so that you don't have to swap weapons all the time.

Yeah, it's a balance problem too. They added a perk system (similar to Fallout) that gives you different bonuses each level. You also can run when not in battle and have gloves, a belt, boots, and weapon swaps.

But it's really hard to know where to put your stats early on. Blocking by maxing dex early doesn't seem to work nearly as well for warriors.

The game was brutal as a summoner but then pretty easy as an Executioner.

I don't like the Barbarians not having magic either. Being able to telekill succubi becomes essential once they can walk faster than you.

I have mixed feelings about axing friendly fire too. Fucking up and accidentally fire walling your own party to death is a Diablo right of passage.

Necro can easily ramp it up to 700, I always start with him and just clear the pit, tunnels, cows and CS until I have gear for others. Then I keep it at 300-400, depending of what space I have, 7% mf sc are great.

Once you hit level 80 or so you should start to see staves with teleport for sale. It's not as great as enigma or an amulet, but you can swap to it.

I used to run the Pit with a necro with 4 P topaz armor, a dual P topaz helm, and some othe minor MF stuff.

Probably the easiest class. Just have your merc and golem get some kills in the Blood Moor until you have a full army and then teleport to the pits. I normally keep revives as meat shields too.

Corpse explosion does all the work, just wipe and repeat. Essentially no monsters are fire and physical immune and your damage output is insane.

If a boss has fanatacism I normally just flip to decrep to be safe.

If you have your old 16 digit keys and are trying to install the game from the download then you have to go on their site redeem your 16-digit key then go to your account subscriptions go down to Diablo 2 and copy the 24 digit key that it gives you.

Fuck it, I'll stare at some skill trees and see who else to start. Maybe I'll say fuck it and make a summoner, and actually make it properly this time since its been... possibly 18 years since I last played one in diablo 2 in any real amount.

I take it you guys use ATMA or gomule to move items to do this stuff? Still trying to go as vanilla as possible since I'll be playing with friends online in december after ladder reset.

From my memory, the reason D1 didn't become a mindless endgame loot grind is because of item dupes.
Everyone already had the elixers and Godly Plate of the Whale, etc. Fucking Staff of Apocalypse.
We didn't kill Diablo for loot at all. It was just fun to do.

No thanks

I know they patched Iron Maiden out of the game at some point, but that whole experience soured me on HC games quite tremendously. I don't get too much enjoyment out of permadeath modes in games which you can burn endless hours on. It just hurts too much.
Got no problem with permadeath on rogue-likes of course because there's generally less time/effort investment.

generic advice to noobs considering their first playthrough: the best build is the one where you don't look up builds. Pick the character you think looks the coolest, and then pick the skills you think sound and look the coolest. Do that until you plateau and can't advance further. THEN start a new character or respec into a proper build.

Also don't play summonmancer, that shit is boring

1 point amp damage
1 point clay golem
For every 2 points into skeletons, 1 point into skele mastery.
then max skel mastery.
1 point summon resist
1 point golem mastery
1 point decrep
pump Corpse Explosion until range is about 9 or 10 feet
then do whatever.
maxxing points into clay golem is good, extra points into summon resist is nice also. revives are cool but only if you have a staff with teleport charges or Enigma runeword.
skeleton magi are shit.

1 point into Bone Armor and then max bone prison is also nice (Bone armor is stronger lvling up it's synergy than actually lvling the skill itself).

main thing with a summonmancer is make sure your merc's gear is good and that he's got the Might aura.
Get him a good polearm and some life leech as soon as you can. Get him into a Smoke or Treachery eth bugged armor and eventually get him an upped Eth Kelpie Snare or Obedience in a good eth base.

>> No.6012117

Actually it's 3 points in raise skeleton for each point in skeleton mastery, but it doesn't really matter that much since you'll have both maxed by early NM.

Fire golem is shit, don't bother.

When you cube non-socketed eth armor to add sockets to it, it applies the eth def bonus again, so you end up with 225% normal defense, which is referred to as e-bugging.
It's frowned upon by some people (retards) as cheating, but the Prudence RW is the only way to make use of it for your main character, and caring whether someones merc has that extra defense is a sign of autism.

Anyway, the thing you really want on your merc is a source of crushing blow, so you don't have to farm urdars for every boss fight. Besides that you also need to give him leech and damage/attack speed so he can stay alive and generate corpses fast; and then there is stuff like resists and open wounds. Gearing up your merc can be a pretty big part of gearing a necro, but also quite a tricky one since you only get 3 slots to play with.

Fire golem sucks mostly because by the time you have enough points into him you're in Hell where nearly everything's immune to fire.
Iron Golem CAN be good, but it's mostly a rich-man's toy. He can also be used for a clutch source of Insight in case you want to use an Act 1 or Act 5 merc instead.
