hey /vr/. can we talk about games from Treasure? I feel like Treasure does a pretty good job and released quite some dynamic and fun titles. But I don't know much about them.

I recently got into Mischief Makers and it's really fun. How are other retro titles on different systems? Any suggestions, even newer ones?
About to try Light Crusader for Genesis.

They are ex-Konami employees.
They worked on games like the 8bit and 16bit looney toons/tiny toon/animaniacs games, Super castlevania IV; Axelay, and others.

Pretty much all of their titles have the gold touch, never was disappointed.
They're supposedly working on a WiiU (or maybe it was 3DS) secret project now.

It's also not only a 10/10 action game but also an incredible rendition to all of the most famous Osamu Tezuka works... it's great how they reworked on the original Astro Boy story to make it merge with other Tezuka characters like Black Jack, Sharaku or the phoenix.

Um, that really depends on your goal.

I would agree Radiant Silvergun is an easy shooter if your goal is just to beat the game.

But if you really want to get an insanely high score, where you go for single color bonuses and combo strings to get the highest score possible, it is actually ridiculously hard.

Go on XBOX live, look at the top ranked score on the leaderboards, and download his replay. Tell me that's easy.

I am glad I am not the only one who thinks Sin and Punishment is alright. People are hyping it as something truly awesome when it just feels solid. Maybe it is the fact that it is a Treasure game on a Nintendo console and it wasn't localized. I've had the game for many years now near the end of the N64's life cycle.

Actually I'd have to say both N64 titles I played just weren't as good as their previous Genesis titles. I mean I like them and think they are good, but they aren't amazing or must plays.

FUCK SCHMUPS ! WHY HAVEN'T YOU TALKED ABOUT DYNAMITE HEDDAY AND GUNSTAR HEROES YET ????

>> No.598890

>>598617
Yes, getting a high score is hard, but that doesn't change the scoring system from being one of the most utterly boring and rigid in the history of STGs.

While you're up there on those leaderboards, why don't you compare the high score replay to those below it? Notice much difference between them? No, you won't. When you play for score in Ikaruga and RS, you grind the same set path decided by the developers over and over again. Due to the nature of the scoring systems, the slightest deviation from the path will result in your score being completely worthless and your run ruined. It's to the point where the advice on scoring in those games is to watch superplays of it - which is fine - but then try and follow those superplays to the pixel, rather than use what you've learned from the superplay and combine it with your own knowledge and ideas.

STGd from superior (STG) developers will allow mistakes and a chance for you to improvise during a run (even the supposedly "memorisation-heavy" Cave games are better in this regard) and still come out with a massive score. I hate to parrot it but go play Mars Matrix.

Radiant Silvergun and Ikaruga aren't bad games, they're just overrated. Decent when played for the 1cc, though personally I don't like Ikaruga. We can't forget that Treasure was also behind Silpheed: The Lost Planet.

That said:

Bangai-O is fucking incredible.
Gradius 5 is the anti Radiant Silvergun and Ikaruga, to the point where I wonder how much of a hand they had in the design compared t G.Rev.
Mischief Makers was odd but fun.

I haven't played anything else from them. I need to get Gunstar Heroes so I can play it with me mates. I think they might have made some PS1 titles, I should try them.

I don't really know much about Radiant Silvergun, but Ikaruga, while really easy to get into and complete, is insanely tedious to optimize and the game gives you little to no incentive to do so unlike, say, Mars Matrix where the process of optimizing is both naturally enticing (DEM GOLD CUBES) and allows for multiple approaches to optimizing any given situation.

I mean sure different strokes for different folks, but you have to be insanely bored and/or have lots of time to kill if you want to be able to go on that route Treasure wants you to go on perfectly and get a high score.

tl;dr massively overrated, good beginner SHMUP to get your feet wet, but really only a good gateway into some better ones if that

Treasure makes gems out of every other genre they make though, one of my personal faves being Astro Boy Omega Factor. Combat system is engaging as fuck, the sprites are GORGEOUS, and there's a ridiculous amount of content and fanservice: probably the most well handled adaptation of any license I've ever seen.

then i never really touched their stuff until i went on a spree recently. really, really liked mischief makers. alien soldier was way too obtuse and i didn't like how the player takes up half the screen. guardian heroes, silhouette mirage, not a big fan either. i didn't play light crusader because i don't like western-styled games. rakugaki showtime i haven't tried because lolnofriends. i couldn't get into bangai-o. never tried stretch panic and based on what i've heard, i don't really want to. star successor was okay.

their stgs are interesting. i just wish radiant silvergun wasn't such a memorizer, i really don't like that kind of game design. and i'm not good at remembering things.

I feel like Treasure started to go downhill when they began making sequels. For a long time, one of the great things about them was that they never made sequels. Even though we sometimes wished there would be another Gunstar Heroes or or Bangai-O or the like, it was always made up for by each new game being really different and creative (hello Stetch Panic).

But somewhere along the line they decided to ditch that old policy, and it hasn't been serving them well. Every single sequel has been markedly worse than the original. Gunstar Superheroes, Guardian Heroes Advance and the Bangai-Os all just feel shat out and nowhere near the same quality. Meanwhile AstroBoy GBA comes out and is one of the best games the system ever got. Go figure.

If you haven't played it, Silhouette Mirage is sort of like a sidescrolling action game version of Ikuraga. You are a dual element (Silhouette/Mirage) and when you attack someone of the same element you suck their power out, when you are the oposing element you damage and kill them. You can also grab them and punch to get coins that you use to buy weapon upgrades etc.

So, in the original game it's a typically fast paced action game similar to Gunstar Heroes. You run through, smashing and bashing, collect a bit of energy on one guy, use it to blast another, grab a thrid guy and smash some coins out before tossing him aside and continuing.

Well, Vic Ireland being the smart guy he is thought that was too easy. So he upped the damage reistance on all the enemies as well as increasing the cost and frequency with which you have to buy weapon upgrades.

The result is that instead of a run 'n gun style action game, you essentially had to enegry suck and cash bash every single enemy before killing them and moving on. If you didn't you would quickly run out of energy and not be able to afford the upgrades which are highly important. It's a tedious, iritating mess of a game.

Maybe people shouldn't say "YOU'RE GAME IS SHIT, YOU HAVE BAD TASTE" and should say "I personally don't like this game because ___" but in a non-antagonizing manner.

People shouldn't have to talk to you with deference if they want civil discussion. And saying "I personally don't..." or "in my opinion..." is completely redundant anyway, we know it's his opinion.

but honestly I think this thread is a landmark for the end of /vr/

Precisely, but by the same token when someone does that it's always best just to ignore them (hence, 'don't feed the trolls') because when you get all pissy and throw a tanrum because someone trolled you it just makes everything worse.

The best way to deal with a troll is to not say anything, or if you absolutely must just be brief and dismissive. A 'that's nice' or 'cool starry bra' are sufficient to let them know you got the point but don't care enough about it to say anything meaningful in return. Generally though, just ignore. If someone wants to yell "IKARUGA IS FOR BABIES" just let them, who really cares?

They did the same thing to Popful Mail, didn't they? The combat in the version we got is the pits.

It's funny because /vr/ has always been "/v/ with less posts and no offtopic" since day one

Not seeing much discussion about treasure games now...

Which version of Bangai-O is your guys favorite? I've only played DC.

It's a good game, just not as great as the first.

I've beat it on hard mode, but I haven't beat the "second story" yet.
