I am traveling further than i usually do this week as i have to go 30 miles away to pick up something i found on craigslist, so i will be going to yard sales on the way there.

there are about 15 yard sales advertised, but i'm sure there will be more.

Do you have your weekend hunting planned?

Craigslist has been shit for this kind of thing in my opinion. I keep looking though.

You get a guy with 5 shitty genesis or SNES games saying "$30 each, or all for $100" and then backs it up by saying that he checked eBay and these are "current going prices" or some bullshit.

Then you have to wade through all the people trying to sell their 360 for far more than it's worth.

Yep, I got around a dozen planned so far. Last weekend was my first time doing this, and I made the mistake of sticking near where I live. I'm going straight to the middle class neighborhoods this time.

"No thanks" means "No, I wasn't interested in the game" when you are. If something is priced too high, you should let them know and try to haggle. Just don't be a total dick about it.

Say something like, "Oh, I thought it'd be price more around three bucks." I've done that and managed to talk people from $50 to $5. "Do a lot of people ask about this item?" is another line that works, because it really has no good answer: if not, it's really not an item that's flying off the shelf and maybe you should reconsider the price tag. If yes, why hasn't it sold? Again, reconsider that price tag. "Well, you can really take five bucks or nothing" has also made some sales for me.

It probably helps that I'm never that attached to anything I'm looking at and will gladly walk away if the person doesn't want to make a sale. I never go to garage sales or the such with the thought that I'm going to pick up things, I always say "Let's go and see what they have."

And if you piss someone off, so what? Trying to sell some old game for $50 is a dickass move unless it's rare (it isn't).

Who set the price? Who says "this game is worth exactly 20 dollars?" Is there a committee?

It's bullshit to see these games as "worth" some fixed price when they're worth whatever the buyer and seller agree they are worth. That seller isn't going to sell you the game for 25 cents unless that's what they believe it is worth. In some cases, if they didn't sell it for 25 cents, they either donated it to a charity or trashed it, because a 25 cent price sticker says "I no longer want this in my home because it's clutter to me, please take this thing I no longer wish to own off my hands for a modest price."

I say this as someone who has been thanked for buying things for what I believed was cheap and taking them off the former owner's hands.

With hopes of repeating my 3DS pick up last week, I set out again. My first sale today had a 2600, a 64, a PS1, and another console I can't remember. Considering my poor luck at the beginning last Saturday, I thought I had finally got lucky. So then I asked for the prices, $25 for a PS1 with no games and no controllers, $25 for an N64 with a shit game and no controller (and no expansion pak), and finally $75 for a dirty 2600 with a nice amount of games and controllers. I already owned a 2600 but I have a low number of games so I was considering buying it but I knew it isn't worth that. This is what she said to me, "that price is firm, I found some on eBay for that price and shipping isn't a big deal".

So I left that and began on a string of fruitless garage sales. I picked up the three Genesis cases for free from some guy. That was about the halfway point and I'd be dammed if I wasn't getting something. The Home Alone case has a manual. If anyone here needs one of these, shoot me an email.

Next I found Battlefront II for $1, not CiB but I had to pick something up. Finally it had been about 4.5 hours since I started and I was ready to go home with my meager deal. The last neighborhood made it worth it. I got those five at the bottom for $1 each and they're all CiB (poor MGS2 got attacked by a dog though). The guy also said he had a NES and a Genesis somewhere in the attic but he didn't want to go up there right now. Like an idiot I forgot to give him my phone number because I want a Genesis.

The last place I found the PS2. The games are mostly sports but I felt I could drop $25 for it. It had been mostly a waste of a day and I wanted at least one big item.

Overall not as good as last weekend's $53 3DS+SP, but it was worth it. It looks like it's going to rain, so I don't think I'll go to the flea market tomorrow.

Literally nothing NES/SNES or older related.

All DS and Xbox games.

I did get a Dreamcast with cords/controller in box w/ the bass fishing rod and 4 games

NFL Blitz 2000, Sega GT, Sega Bass Fishing, and Crazy Taxi.

$40 for everything so not that great or anything but I wanted one anyway.

Found a few games yesterday. Bought the N64 game for 25 cents at one yard sale and the NES games w/ box for $25 at another. Originally, the lady selling the NES games had them priced at $10 each. I acted slightly interested but told her they were priced too high for me. She admitted that she didn't know what to price them at, and I talked her down to $25 for all of them or basically $2.50 a piece plus the box which she let me have.

Not vidya, but about 5 years ago I was out with my grandparents at their weekend yard sale scrounge and I saw they had some mineral samples. I ask them about it and they just up and hauled five huge boxes of mineral/gem/geological samples from the back of their garage and practically gave them to me for free.
I'm huge into geology and the samples were fantastic and would have cost around $700 from an actual store, got em all for $50.

As far as videogames go though, flea markets have been getting worse and worse for deals. Almost everyone tries to retail or over price them, even the old people who clearly know nothing about games but want you to pay $30 for a common GB game.
Yard sales are where it's at especially if you see a middle aged woman selling a bunch of old toys with other boxes. Chances are she's getting rid of her child's playthings.

My flea market experience today only netted me a cheapish Dreamcast and virtually no NES/SNES or otherwise games in the entire gigantic flea market. I was disappointed.

I went to a few thrift shops... apparently they have gotten wise to the whole retro game as their shelves are either empty. We also have one retro game store in town and it is overpriced.

I just got back from going to four different garage sales this morning within 2 miles of my house. Bought four PS2 games (Chessmaster, GTA Vice City, Activision Anthology and Goldeneye Rogue Agent) for $2 each - all with case and manual in excellent condition.

Also found three unopened cases (each case has 10 boxes) of new and shrink wrapped Maxell 5.25" DSDD floppy disks...$30 for all three cases. 300 new 5.25" disks to be used in my C64, A800, etc.

And then there was a guy that wanted $200 for an Atari 5200 with only one controller and four games. He also had about 40 PS1 and PS2 games for $10 to $15 each; at least half of them were sports games and all were extremely common titles. All the genesis games worked. Havent tested the ds lite and ps2 yet because I dont have an ac adapter for the ds lite and i dont feel like testing the ps2 right now. The shovelware titles for the ds worked fine though, tested them on my 3ds then sold them to my local shop.

I asked the guy and one of the girls working the yard sale how much the ds lite was, because it wasnt priced, and they responded "10" and "6" at the same time, so i got it for 6.

The gamecube worked too, by the way, despite the b and x buttons sticking like hell on the controller.

All right, so here's my summary picture for the weekend so far; paid about 60 for everything, I lost quite a bit on the boxed NES games; paid 25 for the 3, which I think is a bit much. The GBA is missing a battery and cover, which I ordered for 10, so about 70 altogether this week. Also, it's hard to see, but the GB games are Tetris Attack and Perfect Dark.

Overall, pretty disappointing considering how many sales I've been to today. Hoping for better luck tomorrow at a local flea market.

>> No.606842

Found an Original Gameboy that's in goodish condition, just a bit dirty for $5 today. And then Tetris and Nesopen for a dollar each.

Asking every person selling today if they had any old games and getting the same responses. I finally started asking what the people who were buying all the games looked like, and I got descriptions of the same three people from the 20ish yard sales I went to. These guys were walking up and asking if they had any nintendo stuff, and then without even seeing it, saying that they would buy it.

Didn't get anything yesterday, not going to bother going out tomorrow.

I went to Good Will and a few yard sales and didn't see anything. I ended up going to the flea market hoping to find any deals. Only two stands sell games in my flea market and most game cases are broken or scratched to hell. Reluctantly end up buying tetris and super mario land for the gameboy so I didn't feel like I wasted my time. Regret it almost immediately.

Popped in and compared the prices of the games at my local game shop along the way home and see the prices are a little cheaper but not much. Come home and check them on ebay and find them even cheaper. I've been looking for a few months in my area for games I want but no one has a fair price, so I think this is the last time I'll go running around over here. I should of just stayed home and ordered my shit on ebay.

This anon again.

I did remember something else. I was at my last sale of the day, and I asked if they had any old games. One of the ladies there says she thinks she has something, but it's "old". I tell her that's what I'm looking for, and she goes to get it.

She brings out a NES, no cables, no controllers, no games. She says this was what she was talking about, but she doesn't want to sell it because it's a NES-001 and "it's worth a few hundred dollars; I saw it on TV a while ago." I politely tell her that it's okay if she doesn't want to sell it, but that it isn't worth several hundred. She got really upset and accused me of trying to rip her off. I said I wasn't even interested in it, but even a NES-001 is only worth $5-10 in the condition her's was in. She was really mad at that point, and I ended up just getting back in my car before she decided to flip out.

I figured you guys would enjoy this little tale.

Went to my first flea market 2 weekends ago, saw nothing younger than PS1 (and those were all demo discs) that were primarily sports/Guitar Hero games. Some guy tried selling me an original XBox with no cords and a grungy PS1 controller, but I politely declined.

This week at the goodwill, all I saw was Backyard Baseball for the Gamecube.

Can't go flea market this week due to rain/unusual cold. Hoping next week's goodwill or thrift store is better. Living in the bible belt is the ultimate suffering for this hobby.

ITT lots of quitters. You guys go to 1 or 2 sales and cry when you don't find anything? Have you lost your incentive to search and earn the big finds? You think you're just gonna walk right in and get handed the world? Pathetic.

What happened to that drive and stubbornness that kept you going when you were playing those brutal games in the day? You all act like modern gamers seeking immediate reward and when you don't get it you complain. But hey, that's less competition for me so whatever. I'm still disappointed in how many of you give up so easily.

Whatever helps you sleep at night. You could just as easily ride a bike around or walk to find garage sales. I've done it. Though I do understand if you have to drive 20 miles or something then yeah you may as well just buy stuff online.

>>607405

I'm not generalizing, my comment was directed to everyone who gets discouraged after 1 or 2 tries. I have read the thread and there are some people going to many different ones and will continue to do so. I'm just tired of hearing people complain when they go to 1 or 2 sales and come up short. Odds are the sale wont have something you want, but it's perseverance that usually pays off and that chance to score something big.

1. Gas isn't even near $4.30 where I live, not that being relevant for you.

Well then in your case I understand if you don't want to go often. Still, that doesn't mean you have to give up. Just say you tried and will try again at the next chance you get.

That's cool. I live in Chicago. It's pretty much not worth it either way. Shit gets raped around here and most people know their worth. The flea markets around here are the really ghetto mexican kind where they sell giant t-shirts and knives at every other booth. I'm not even in the ghetto.

You'd think biking would be a good idea then but honestly not really. Garage sales are few and far apart around me. Usually you'd drive a town between garage sales. In the early 2000's I'd go to alot but they're just not as common anymore. It's pretty much just a waiting game until the block sales or church garage sales.

I'm sure though there's someone in Chicago with better experiences though.

Found pretty much fuck all today. Got SMB3 and Talespin on NES for $7 total, and a slightly broken wiimote.

Got wind of a thrift store opening today and went around time they opened. They had a dedicated vidya section surprisingly; none of the stuff was really great but they were trying. Guy running it was a bro too, asked him how much SMB3 was to which he replied "Well it goes for like 15 on ebay so I'll say 5". Finally someone with sense. Was disappointed to hear though that about a week before the store opened he unloaded a boxed SNES lot online. Would've been cool if he had saved some of those for the grand opening.

Hit a flea market after that, which completely sucked. Though to be fair I missed what was probably the only decent deal there, a Gameboy Pocket (or color, didn't see which) and 3 games for $5. Some Mexican grabbed them just as I got up to that particular table. Doesn't bug me since I'm not into that, but eh. There was a yard sale on the way out of there too, didn't have anything though.

Honestly, I don't think this stuff is for me. I don't mind the thrift stores and goodwills that much though of course they're always a crapshoot. But the flea markets and yard sales are so fucking out of the way and time consuming for me and they're even worse luck-wise than thrifts (in fact, the flea markets I've been to so far have been outright disgusting). Feels like a waste of time, only reason for me to go right now is because at least I'm spending time with my gf while doing it. It also doesn't help that I have OCD so these kinds of places make me deathly uncomfortable unless I'm on drugs, which I also don't like
