bonkers power for the time period, nearly on par with arcades, and it was much more japan-focused than IBM-compatibles at the time. game developers loved it because it was easy to code for, using an ubiquitous Motorola 68000 (thus where the name came from).

They were never marketed outside of Japan and most literature about them was in Japanese so stupid foreigners ended up mystifying them with bullshit like Capcom using them for development.

I'm pretty sure a PC that could play near perfect Capcom and Konami arcade ports at a time when the PC was just warming up to the idea of having more than 16 colours to work with and 30 fps becoming a distant possibility is enough to make you wonder what things would be like if the IBM PC had actually had some graphics capability as standard. The Amiga is a similar beast in that it was capable of much that the PC would take 5 more years to get, but as it was blitter based, easy arcade ports were not possible so most were gimped, low frame rate Data East crapware.

the Sharp X68000 was used as a development system for many arcade games. Capcom used the X68000 to develop the original arcade version of Final Fight, for example. Which is why the X68000 is so close to perfect.

the sharp x68000 was the culmination of more than a decade of research and development into personal computers for artists and creators, it was designed to be a no frills, no compromise workstation in the height of japans bubble economy. no expenses were spared in creating a computer chock full of custom VLSI circuitry that cost millions to develop.

The other neat thing that the sharp x68000 had going for it was developer support. a computer is only as good as the software that runs on it. and all of the major players had something for the sharp, capcom and konami released several AAA titles for it.

It is pretty amazing that a game like version of Castlevania it had could be played on a home system at the time. Bear in mind, it was a $6600 machine(369,000 yen in 1987). Very costly, obviously not just for playan gaems. The games were additional perks for the programmer lads who owned/used them.

here's a tip for anyone looking to get into the sharp x68000 on a budget. the original cz-600c model suffers from the nicd battery leaking on the 69mhz oscillator, which in turn kills the 31khz video mode that it boots into. the result is a black screen and no functionality. the oscillator is readily available on digikey. so what i'm saying is that if you buy a 'junk' cz-600c and put a $12 crystal oscillator in it, you can flip it for ten times what you paid. the best part is the power supplies in the ORIGINAL cz-600c model are rock solid reliable.

Yet they're practically worthless. It's not like there's any decent games that can take advantage of it these days.

But anyone with some cash can buy a gun and go shoot it, and from experience, shooting a real gun beats fucking around in most FPS games hands down. The smell of powder and sound and kick all give a great rush.

Anyway, the point is that the X68000 and others like it represent a fascinating look from a lost era. A time when your pooter didn't phone home or have NSA/Chinese backdoors installed.

iirc it's an issue with the neccd.sys driver not working with later drives, also the later models stopped using discrete 86 sound with a real OPNA and instead use a consolidated 86 compatible chip that does not work with the PCM mode that policenauts uses. some later models may run it with a modified boot disk but it varies from one model to another.
