Do you have any feelings about these little chinese handhelds? I ordered one of these RG350s but I've never owned any such device before, wondering if I fucked up.

Most modern phones are much more capable than PSPs, though. I mean, you can get Retroarch on your phone and new GPUs make emulating more powerful software possible. I run Dreamcast on my phone for kicks.

I think the psp is a better all in one solution because the hardware buttons on it don't suck.

All you need is a microsd card and pro duo adapter

>having the hassle of pairing (and physically mounting) the controller to your phone everytime you want to play
>all of that wasted space in your pocket / bag / purse / whatever for a big-ass controller
>if it's about third party controllers, they're completely unreliable, uncomfortable, and of poor quality
Until a company like Samsung or Sony come up with an official handeld-fied android phone with quality physical buttons, android devices for me will be a strong no.
I know the Xperia Play and Nvidia Shield Portable are a thing, but their hardware and versions of android are very obsolete compared to the modern standard unless you're into 4th gen games and lower, which at that point might as well invest in a PSP or 3DS.

They're neat little toys. I'd buy one only if you like the form factor, but they essentially run the same emulators as the psp and perform about the same.

You can get a decent phone controller that's smaller than a PSP, I don't see how that's wasted space. The "hassle" of mounting it is more than made up for by the fact that it's a more capable device.

Dude are you fucking braindead? I get that you've never explored the option, but spreading misinformation just makes you look stupid.

Picture extremely fucking related. Go with the Wee2 gamepad. I've had the first version for 3 fucking YEARS with no malfunctions, pairing is as simple as pushing a button, putting it on my phone is as simple as sliding it on. Christ. Please better inform yourself before having an opinion on something.

I had a GCW for years and I was very happy with it, the 350 is basically an upgrade with surprisingly better build quality, two analogs and l2/r2, and a much better screen. The rundown is that PSP emulation is outdated and a lot of emulators on Vita are terrible, and I've been extremely satisfied with pre-PS1 emulation on the GCW hardware which is identical to the 350's.

PS1 emulation is what I would call "good enough". It's good for most games, requires frameskip for others, and in general is good but not perfect. If you primarily want PS1, go out and buy a Vita, they aren't particularly expensive and they render the PSP obsolete in every way. There is no good reason to get a PSP these days unless it's maybe a PSP Go for the form factor. Plus, you can run all of the PSP's homebrew

TLDR: 350 has good buttons, a good screen, and very good emulation of NES, SNES, GB/C, GBA, and Genesis, I haven't looked into PC-E, NGPC and Wonderswan much but it also runs and a handful of other consoles. But, if your primary interest is in PS1 specifically, for a flawless experience get a Vita. The emulators for this are flat out better than the PSP's in my experience other than PS1 which will always be beaten. If you're only interested in power then go burn an enormous amount of money on a GPD-Win/Win 2 or use a controller on your phone.

Honestly, for me it's a total non-issue. Sometimes my thumb rests slightly on the stick halfway down the thumb below the knuckle depending on the position of my thumb, but I tend to barely notice it and I'm not pushing the stick around so much as brushing it, and it's only occasionally. So while your mileage may vary, it hasn't been an issue for me. To shave off a couple of millimetres you can also remove the rubber cap. Depending on how meaty your thumbs are and how you press certain buttons it may be more prevalent for you than me.

But, this has been an issue for many of the community, and currently a fan-made solution is being devised. A 3D-printed low-profile stick that shaves as much off the top as possible is currently mostly complete, and the CAD files will be released publicly. As long as it's printed in resin, it works just as well as the regular cap. It'll probably be posted on the Dingoonity forums when it's done so keep an eye out, if anybody ever makes another emulator handheld in the future and the 350 is brought up I'll mention it.

Changing out the cap is surprisingly easy as the analogs are screwed and plugged into the PCB rather than soldered. Currently the plan is to have both concave and convex options with multiple grips ranging from Gamecube style to PSP-style textured. Right now it's in mostly the final adjustment stages.

I should mention that the intent behind these was also primarily to have a more easily pocketable device as well as solving the accidental contact issue. The analogs stick out a bit awkwardly when pocketed.

While the d-pad position is less of an issue than I thought it would be because the d-pad is actually really good and the position isn't as uncomfortable as I was expecting, if the position is a dealbreaker you can also keep an eye out for the Pocket Go 2, which is kinda ugly and not out yet but has a dominant d-pad and identical hardware save for the lack of a right analog and potentially lower build quality. I'm borderline shill levels of happy with my 350 for what it is since it surprised me with its not-cheapness but it's good to keep options on the table. A 2DS is also a good cheap option, I just don't use one because I hate the ergonomics of the thing.

Not my photo, which is probably why I'm not fat-fingering the stick. I've got the grey one which is probably the best out of the available colours since you can't actually buy an all-black one because China thought it'd be a great idea to make their flagship colour this eye-searing orange and black.

I think about getting one of these from time to time. Then I ask myself why do I need another device to do what my android phone already does, but worse? Apparently the reviews all say the RG350 is decent, but I just use an Xbox One controller and a cheap clip for my phone.

Yeah same. The form factor was temping you buy it but I already have a hacked 2DS. Also this thing costs more than a user N2DS which has better PSX emulation, better all around emulation, Native GBA sand it plays DS/3DS games. It’s not a smart purchase honestly.

I like the LDK Game, very small (like a folded GBA SP), has 6 shoulder buttons, uses a Nokia battery, runs almost everything 8-16 bit fine (SNES titles can be a bit fucky), screen doesn't suck, not too expensive.
I'm hoping they'll get better in the future, wish I had gotten a Vita when they were cheap though.

Neat in concept, but I fail to see what one offers that can't really be done better with a PSP, Vita or 3DS and CFW. Those offer better controls for a dedicated handheld, pluss much more robust communities that aren't going to fizzle out overnight. And on the other end you have phone emulation, I'd wager even a budget handset is probably more powerful as long as you pair it with a controller.
