Didnt know he browsed here, ive played some nice Quake maps of his.
The choices in the video seem a bit odd. They're good maps of course. But shouldn't a list aimed at newcomers include more classic, historic maps? All but one are from the last two years. I would think to include more classic, historic releases. Like Marcher. Or Penile Devastation. Or something from Honey. Or ikspq1. Or even something from a slightly older mapjam like func_mapjam2.

You can make on-the-fly translations for any graphics, but using a palette chart is the only way to make entirely new images that display anything with total control. If a graphic has several pixels of the same color, like say one of the brown shades in an Imp's sprite, they'd all turn into the same thing that you specify in the translation.

If you first fill the translation with the base colors, you can use this to tonemap an actor from green to red depending on health or something like that.

I think I remember now. PB is a guilty pleasure of mine. Popping them with a single rocket or grenade would always one shot them, but I agree nonetheless.
Removing reloading, and reworking/nerfing the hell out of hitscan would make it much better. You'd be able to play much faster that way, on top of making it more about on the fly thinking, and projectile dodging.
Maybe cut out some of the weapons too, because Jesus Christ is switching to the right weapon a pain in the ass.

I found the cue/bins for Hexen II on archive.org, edited the cue to delete all but the first track since the tracks from 2 onward were redbook audio, converted it to iso using a program called bchunk, extracted the disc, extracted the source port on top, ran the patcher exe, then ran glh2.exe. I don't have CD audio but I enjoyed quake like that anyway

Done UV pistol starting with no saves DTWID, DTWID-LE, PhobosDeimos Anomaly. Have to say, the first two are quite impressive. I've had more fun with them than with the actual Doom. Mostly, they aren't very difficult, but some maps gave me trouble. The most difficult ones are E4M6 (Mourning Halls) and E4M8 (Temple Guardian) of DTWID-LE. E6M9 was quite hectic too. It was surprising to me to see how they always found a way to make boss maps more challenging. Now, I am planning to play thourhg UDTWID and No End in Sight before moving on to D2TWID.

Anyone else ever feel nostalgia for mid to late 2000s doom? Back when that Giant squid map blew our minds, back when impse was still really popular, and Skulltag and Zdaemon were the primary way to play Doom MP? I always liked all the Doom 3 themed mods, and all the Doom 64 mods that had butchered colors when converted to Doom's pallette. I remember spending hours in servers running DiB and Doom Barracks Zone 24/7, when everything wasn't survival with complex doom. I miss those days of Doom, lads.

Am I the only one who gets these errors when quitting GZDoom on Linux? It runs just fine, but I get an error when I quit a game and, perhaps for that reason, it doesn't automatically update my config file (so I have to type "writeini" or whatever in the console to get any changes to save).

I also get an error when I close ECWolf.

I've liked the look/feel of PSX Doom and Doom 64 and forgot how god damn fast the original PC release is. The monsters and the player are just faster. The hit-scanners react WAY faster and hit harder. Thus, PSX/N64 Doom is leagues easier to pistol-start no save.

My instincts say that a "balanced doom" would be the demons from the PC original and the hit-scanners of the PSX version.

I like the idea of Doom 64's new sprites but not the implimentation. Most of Doom's sprites are a hodge-podge. The Imp has always looked like a drawing (which is what it is) while others look like digitized puppets. So a good case could be made for a new consistent, and higher resolutin sprites.

But a lot of the new designs are bad. The imps look okay, the demon is good, but many are downright downgrades. The Mancubus is a goofy looking cow. In fact many of the enemies are now cow looking, including the Lost Souls. So hell is a farm aparently?

The weapon sprites are great looking, but they are actually sorta missing the aestetic of Doom. They're slick and futuristic looking. Doom is meant to be a very boring run down outpost in the middle of nowhere.

The 3D at the time couldn't render very high resolution, so all the models end up looking like plasticine and low detailed.

I have a suspicion Duke's ep2, Shiny's Messiah and Quake4 had a common progenitor in terms of looks and gamedesign. I did it guys. I just beat Plutonia on UV, Pistol Starting all levels, No Saves. Did the secret levels a few days ago, but I just beat Gateway to Hell. Feels fuckin' nice man.
