Peak "weird Japan," their characterization of Abe in ads and on the box/title is incomprehensible. The box art doesn't have the girls, but it's still kind of wacky-looking and makes you think it's just some zany game with a Jar-Jar Binks-esque alien. Which it does have that aspect a little bit, but I think everyone can agree the tones are predominantly dark across the board in Abe's Oddysee.

What's just as funny though is that in the actual game, the localization is actually lovingly realized — the translations are accurate, the voiceovers are spot-on, and the new graphics look good.

Why do people call "ダイナマイト刑事" Dynamite Deka?

There are two, maybe 3 acceptable ways to render this name, depending on whether you're a retarded weeb or a sane person. Dynamite Detective is the objectively correct name of the game by any possible metric. If you want to stay closer to the crappy English localisation, you can go for Dynamite Cop, but that has obvious issues because they named the sequel that in the west.

And if you're an insufferable "nippon banzai" tier weeb, you can call it Dainamaito Deka. These are all of the acceptable ways to talk about this game.

"Dynamite Deka", though? Why? If you want to preserve the alliteration, Detective works better. If you want to be a dumb weeb, why not go all out?

No, it's written in Katakana. That's how they signify that it's a foreign word being spelt out phonically. It's similar to how if you write out the word "deka" with the western alphabet, it's not automatically an English loanword just because it's written in a way that's easy for English speakers to read.

So it's important to note here that although yes, it is an English loanword and yes, katakana is used to approximate foreign pronunciation and general construction, the situation is (depending on your point of view) more or less complex than it seems on the surface.

ダイナマイト is not meant to actually evoke the word "dynamite" per se, that is, either the physical object dynamite or the JJ Walker variety. ダイナマイト is just one of many sensationalized Japanese phrases that has lost all meaning and is really just like a novel-sounding word that lends itself well to Japanese phonetics. So now it just kind of evokes "coolness" in a vague cringey way, sort of like how "ninja" is used in English in increasingly irreverent ways, like "lol im like a ninja" when you show some extremely minor level of skill.

>Irish and German (major immigration boom of mid-19th century)
>Italian and Slavic (major immigration boom of late 19th/early 20th centuries)
>Chinese and Japanese (same time but almost exclusively on Pacific Coast)
>refugees from Africa and Asia (sporadic but consistent over 20th century)
>Central and South America (mid-late 20th century to present)

Also include Africans, often forcibly brought over from the 1600s until the mid-19th century, who then have slowly assimilated into the rest.

If I were to guess, the most common heritage in the US is either English, Irish, or German, as they were the earliest and also some of the largest movements. I don't know the exact answer myself though.
