Ring Of Red PS2 launch title. If ever a game needed a seqel, it's this one. After WW2 Japan is partitioned into a Soviet North and a *not*Nazi South. The Mechs are based on WW2 German and Russian tanks, I has a rock paper scissors style where you have to juggle three 5 man units for each mech, 2 infantry and one crew, each of which can have up to special skills or ammo. and despite looking clunky and battles taking up to several hours, by god its addictive.

Now that you mentioned it: screw the years, I'll still have to say H&D 2!
The controls are clunky at times, fiddling with the inventory system sucks, you can't save your custom equipment loadouts, the AI can be pretty wildly inconsistent, etc, but there's just something in H&D 2 that makes me play it all the way through at least once every year. I've to pinpoint it, but haven't quite manage to nail it. At least its appeal is thanks to character, atmosphere - and to use the spammed-to-ad-nauseam meme/bait term - soul.

Sure, it can be a janky mess at times, but damn does H&D 2 do its Commando comics and classic war movies inspired thing with style!
