You really captured the imagination I experienced while playing these games growing up. The man himself, Satoshi Tajiri worked around the clock and deprived himself of sleep coming up with countless ideas and concepts over months for this game, and the end result is something jam-packed that simultaneously manages to feel...sparse. I think it's a combination of deliberate subtlety, obvious hardware limitations of the Gameboy/Color, and intrinsic limitations of the medium of video games which after all are feedback responsive softwares, a series of lines of code crunching arranged with words, graphical assets and synthesized music sequences on the surface to perpetuate the illusion of a inhabiting a world. I would always imagine what the characters were going through as well, and Gen 2 particularly has this eerie feeling to it while simultaneously managing to be the most fucking comfy game of all time.

The entire trek through Mt Silver is itself very poignant, there is such a feeling of I have already done everything, what could be left? It's like the feeling of going inside the Unknown Cave after you beat the Elite Flour in Gen 1 but far more pronounced because of Gen 2's larger scope.

I plan not to come to /vr/ or 4chan any more after this, my posts tend to almost break the 2000 character limit and I'm unhealthily addicted and not going outside or doing things I used to enjoy. But I had to say one last thing about this.

I remember how bleak and empty it all felt. There's something so unsettling about coming all that way only to find you, yourself who played through Red Blue or Yellow 2 years ago, standing at edge of Mt Silver. Staring into nothingness, utterly silent. Just about every game I beat will leave me with an empty and poignant feeling, but never has that felt so deliberate and appropriate as in this game, and I thank you because you perfectly captured how intense, badass and ultimately touching the experience is.

I remember as a kid the mystique games had and how you always hoped to find some cool secret. The internet was full of bullshit rumors about games like secret bosses and hidden areas, and stuff like that. Pokémon in particular was subject to these sort of rumors constantly. Trying to uncover them was usually fruitless but it felt fun and maybe a little ominous. Kanto being included and especially a battle with Red was like the sort of stuff you’d search for in games that were never really there. “go back to Kanto region in Silver/Gold” or “Fight Red on Mt Silver” could easily be imagined as bullshit on SuperCheats.com or something, but it wasnt. The crazy fucks actually put that in the game. I feel like gen 2 just leaned heavily into the mystiqu and intrigue that surrounded Pokémon at the time, or maybe that’s just my nostalgic memory. Either way I was in awe of this shit.

This moment is a lot like Goku's Super Saiyan transformation in Dragon Ball. It was the ultimate culmination of everything up until that point, and everything that followed after could never live up to that moment. The series should have ended here, or at the very least been rebooted.

While I find the execution of Freezes arc rather lacking, the crucial elements like Goku being the last Saiyan, retribution for his people despite them all being shitheads to him, and Vegeta's death were 10/10. It's amazing how toriyama was able to weave this backstory into some dude with a tail.

All my normalfag friends were super excited about the mini Nintendo consoles, all they want to do is plug a box in over HDMI and play their favorite old games. That's the perfect product for them. The "cringe" here would be either modifying the NES/SNES minis to have more ROMs, or bothering owning the original consoles and having to deal with corrosion on the cartridge connectors, trying to make the video outputs look acceptable on modern TVs with svideo/HDMI/etc mods, and even going as far as recapping an older console because the capacitors aged too much and it doesn't work quite right.

It's true that colleagues at my previous codemonkey job had fun with the mini-SNES and PSX laying around the office (and were impressed at my Intelligent Qube skills), but I've met quite a few people who probably think owning such gadgets is cringe too.
My point is that retro gaming is a niche hobby just like harsh noise music or Haskell programming.
