Why did the console ports of DOOM replace E3M1 with a different level? I can understand replacing E2M8 since they couldn't fit the Cyberdemon, but E3M1 was just imps, pinkies and cacos, wasn't it? And Hell Keep, the replacement map, has both more types of enemies and more enemies in total.

Fair enough, even tho this idea seem to have gained attraction when DooMRLA added OWTHEEDGE "Don't call me by my first name, just call me DARK" Kira, and even then before, there were the dark versions of the Player characters IN DoomRLA replaced as specters

I am not gonna blame you for it, so far it's interesting how people are trying to implement it.

Even tho it seems more plausible to add a chance for it if in the map there is a powerfull weapon or the player has the equipment to be able to take on an enemy, because so far it might remish stuff From LCA, unless it can be changed in the settings

The PSX version of DOOM makes me sad. I'm playing the TC with kb+m so obviously I have better control of my movement than intended, but some of the changes are just really sad.
Fortress of Mystery gives you a full capacity of cell ammo so the few enemies in the map are easily mowed down instead of you having to navigate a heavy crowd
Hell Beneath gives you more than 100 ammo and only one hell knight, no barons
Perfect Hatred's cyberdemon is ONE hell knight, not even a baron

The atmosphere is pretty nice, and I understand some of the changes were done because of hardware limitations (can only have so many enemy types in a single level), but it still makes me feel sad.

I think people grossly underestimate how difficult doom was on consoles given the ram and cpu limitations. It was a really intense game back in the day. Especially Doom 2 which came out less than a year later. The PSX port added colored lighting and red book audio to compensate and in many regards was the best way to play back then. You also got a REALLY consistent and high frame rate compared to most PCs in the time. I remember beating doom at around 10-15fps. 60fps or even 30 wasn’t really a think on PC shooters. When I got PSX doom back then it was a night and day difference compared to playing WinDoom. It wasn’t until Legacy came out that the PC was really completely superior.
>>5962086
There’s mods and was injectors to restore things. I play PSX doom on my 3DS when I want on the go doom and it’s pretty nice. Way better than the garbage 3DS port and I’m really used to it from playing it back in the day anyways.

Also PSX doom uses a newer version of the engine that weirdly has Floor over Floor support build style and has supported for some weird BSP trees to allow portals and some other weird stuff. While mostly unused in the game it’s in there for whatever reason. The floor over floor is used for extra details in some of the hell levels.

Yeah I couldn’t afford the Microsoft mouse back then. Which meant worse mouse drivers that I couldn’t load alongside doom so i just used the arrow keys. Which honestly was fine, but that ended up feeling right to me on doom and still does today. I play with the arrow keys on my PC on most wads and do just fine on Nightmare and UV on harder wads. For a long time I remember playing in DoomSeeker or on legacy with arrow keys and eventually switching over to mouse for competitive reasons. But again it never really felt right after years of PSX doom and doom on a amd 486/pentium Pro

Before people call me poor or lazy or whatever, that mouse was like $200 at your local shop. It was stupid expensive. A “cheap” mouse was like $80. Which is still expensive but way easier to stomach. You had to have your load order setup for each game in a BAT file for whatever drivers you wanted to use. Loading the Roland drivers was a no brainer. Doom was made for that shit. But you’d also have to load the bare minimum of everything else. PC gaming kind of really sucked back then. And there was a lot of playing around with it until it worked

>> No.5962245

>>5962237
I had like 8mb of ram maybe. Maybe not even that? I didn’t have an accelerator card. I don’t remember if I even had the math co processor. The low FPS was fine with me but it was by no means smooth. Maybe better frame rates was possible back then, but for me and anyone I knew that’s just kind of how it ran. It ran fine on the pentium pro obviously. But then sourceports were out with special lighting, transparent water and all kinds of crazy fun wads. Then of course that stupid nuts.wad

Doom's recommended specs are top of the line for 1993-94, i486 8-16 MB of RAM, you're looking at a $2000 PC at the very least, not counting the sound card and bells and whistles
Playstation came out in jay-pan in 94, an MSRP was 300 freedom dollars, and was much much slower than a high end gayming rig

then it took nothing less that Weeb technosorcery for Doom to run on the thing at a playable speed, which I can't tell you exactly how many frames, because I only know one guy who played doom on it, and I met him well into 2000s

All Sega was to ask iD; "We'd like to contract a port of Doom, please."

As said, it was the fault of Carmack, who would refuse to allow the devs using anything that caused texture warping, thinking it sloppy and ugly, even if it would give much better performance as a tradeoff.
Given that he was busy wracking his brain like crazy to make Quake's software 3D to work (and he likely worked hard on making sure it wouldn't have unsightly warping), it might have colored his judgment at the time.
He's admitted that this wasn't a good approach and that he should have allowed them to look at more options.

The Saturn would do Powerslave, Duke Nukem 3D, and Quake just fine later on, so it's not like you couldn't do a game like Doom on the machine. Had Carmack been more agreeable at the time then the Saturn port of Doom would probably have been a lot like the Playstation one.

Either is fine. The levels were designed and balanced around pistol start, that's how the mappers playtested them, but Doom was also put together for playing continuously, that's the games they shipped, and the manual tells you to save often so as to not lose all your stuff (you'd start over with nothing in the original .exe).

The two original games will mostly become more challenging this way, which may appeal to some, but it may also make some of the secret hunting less important and substantial (such as finding a backpack in a map where you can't hope to reach full ammo anyway). Again, very much a personal preference thing.

>> No.5965503

After doing a bit of Quake mapping & modding, i can absolutely see why the devs of Wrath Aeon Of Ruin chose to use darkplaces. There are so many limitations & weird oddities in the original engine. >graphics

>demo lumps
>levels and their associated lumps
>palette files
>colormap files (which I think is a later sourceport thing)
Which is why you can make a new .wad from scratch with all new assets, but without writing any engine stuff, and assuming everything is there, the original .exe will play it.

All the engine code is in the .exe, the .wad format is just a convenient way to package all the assets.

There was an old sourceport forked from GZDoom (back when it was in 1.0.29) called Scoredoom that added a scoring system on top of normal Doom, with an online high score table and everything. It got its final update and went offline a year ago or so. As someone who really loves arcade games and scoring systems, I feel like it was extremely underrated. So I decided to play through Sigil 1.21 UV pistol starting on Scoredoom to show off what it's like. I've made it up to E5M4 so far, and I'll keep updating as I record each level. I'm not godlike or anything, but I intend to at least UV-max everything. No commentary, but I'll have silly MIDI soundfonts for each video.

Lives are a strange concept in a game with quicksaving. You kinda have to take yourself on faith that you'll actually restart from the top if you run out of lives instead of just loading an autosave or quicksave. You should try doing the same with community made WADs, many of the popular ones are harder than Plutonia. I've been chasing that high of the UV/PistolStart/NoSaves run and it's quite addictive.

What is your favorite TITLEPIC and D_INTRO ?

Just freshly smoosh'd my IWADs to include the updated SIGIL 1.2. I think I'll use Doom (Registered)'s original TITLEPIC and D_BUNNY as the main menu theme.

It's got
>The Ultimate Doom
>Sigil
>Doom 2
>The Master Levels
>No Rest for the Living
>TNT
>Plutonia

afaik it doesn't have one, because the master levels were distributed as individual WADs and had a level selector for DOS

Also remember, D_INTRO is not the file you want to replace in the wadsmoosh, it's D_DM2TTL .

Unique sounds for each demon is good, the more distinct they are the better, but a lot of it is PSX Doom sounds, which IMO fits best when paired with the rest of PSX Doom's/Doom 64's sounds and characteristics, and don't necessarily mix the best with the original sounds.
I dislike some of the sound mixing as well, I can't put my finger on it but a lot of it feels like it's been 'sharpened' somehow, it's unpleasant to my ears.
