I know it's maybe not a big deal anymore, but man. I can't even begin to think of how SMB1 was made. Something feels genuinely impressive about it

Did they see these single screen arcade games and Atari games and go "man, what if you could like explore a whole level?"

"What's a level?" And then they had to figure out what exactly games and stages were

>> No.5954217

Miyamoto and Tezuka mapped the levels out on graph paper which the programmers then coded into the game.

>> No.5954221

Also there were games that scrolled before SMB.

Before carmack invented 3D everyone had to walk around in a single axis. Imagine how crazy was that.

The Famicom was impressive hardware for its day. More powerful for vidya related processing than pretty much all personal computers at the time.

I'm not sure when the Sharp X68000 came out, but that was pretty much the only computer that could compete with it at the time and I'm sure that computer cost WAY more than a Famicom did.

SMB was HEAVILY influenced by Pac-Land, but Pac-Land is no Super Mario Brothers. I have it for TurboGrafx.

Man was I thrown threw a loop when I selected the fucked up backwards control scheme.

>I'm not sure when the Sharp X68000 came out
1987. Again, use the internet.
>that was pretty much the only computer that could compete with it at the time
Could? COULD? It was practically equivalent to a CPS1 arcade machine, it made the Famicom look like an ancient outdated relic.
>I'm sure that computer cost WAY more than a Famicom did.
It was one of the most powerful home conputers in the 1980s, of fucking course it was expensive, dumbass.

Why is everyone here retarded? Besides being filled with zoomers of course.

Maybe try not being such faggot? I get it. You're mad because your bum is sore from taking it up the ass all day and night, but you don't need to act like your getting pound in the ass while you're on /vr/

>> No.5954379

Supposedly, it began as an arcade-style rocketship game, but then Miyamoto saw Pac-land at an arcade and they completely re-did the project. So the first year of development largely just boiled down to experimenting with the hardware.

There were predecessors like Pac-Land that people mentioned, but it feels like an impressive leap because it was one. Super Mario Bros. was amazing at the time.

People are talking about design influence and historical impact.

But HOW wasSMB built? What computer was it written on? Is there a reverse engineer of the source code somewhere? Is it documented and explained? HOW was the game made?

You posted a bunch of erroneous shit ( a super powered computer from the late 80s) that doesn't even fit in with the discussion at hand (an early 80s console and its killer app). Moreover, you could've saved yourself from that embarrassment with google in 5 seconds. Chill.

Miyamoto was high as fuck on cocaine he snorted off a Japanese hookers tits the night before. This being the early eighties he was getting a foot job and licking an acid tab off a strangers chest when he got the inspiration for Super Mario Bros. He woke up with his foot stuck in the toilet and found he had coded the game in its entirety on his PET over the course of a 6 month binge. He Dropped a few shrooms and changed into his big boy overalls and tightened up the graphics before compiling the game. Realizing he had forgotten to make a new cloud sprite and that he had forgotten his graphing paper, Spirograph, light bright and crayons at home he decided to just reuse the bush sprite and color it white. Although he had originally modeled Mario off Chef Bogarde the white moustache looked strange. He removed it but realized Mario looked like a paedo without it. He decided to add it back in with a different color but this broke the pallete used on the sky. He decided that purple was a good enough color and that the japs eyesight was too poor from being DPd by American nukes to notice. They didn’t notice. Unfortunately he had named the game super Mario brothers but forgot to include a character select. He decided fuck it and left Mario as the only primary playable character and shipped the game anyways. He died at the ripe age of 37 ripping rails off the banisters of Nintendo’s trading card headquarters as he was known to do, he would slide down the stairs on a carpet shouting “it’s a miyamoto” which gave staff the inspiration for Mario’s titular line in Mario 64 and for the magic carpet levels. Staff knew him to ride on hookers backs and donkey punch them so they incorporated this as Yoshi into Mario world as a gag. He liked it so much yoshi stuck around. Birdo similarly is based off his love for trans prostitutes as is princess peach. The toads were inspired by his midget filled cocaine parties. Hopefully I helped you anon

Americans view Super Mario Bros\. as a launch title, but it was actually a farewell to the bare Famicom/NES before the launch of the Famicom Disk System, which enabled larger ROMs but ended up being superseded by advances in cartridge tech

I remember when carmack ported the first level of mario bros 3 to his scroller engine and sent it to nintendo as a proof of concept for a possible PC port, of course nintendo told him to fuck off but it was still impressive

Nah, they just took a look at Pac-Land in the arcades and said "let's just do that with our Mario character".

Came out in 1983 for the Atari 800 home computer. Did scrolling platforming before Pac-Land or Super Mario.
