That's because P3 was developed by Russians. I don't know, it's like if you are Russian you can't be a game developer because your game is bound to be shit or something. Probably not true before, idk, 2000-ish? Nowadays this is pure fact

Among the games developed in Russia there's COD Modern Warfare 2,which is actually a great game. But overall their track record is just weird.
Among the Doom community they seem to be quite good.

About Postal 3,it was also published by Akella which published that russian expansion for Postal 2,Corkscrew Rules.
Didn't play it but from what I heard is absolute garbage. Both on a level design and humor standpoint(outdated 2000s russian memes)

It's a lot easier these days if you use static sector portals instead of 3D floors (which are godawful to work with once you start stacking several over each other to build complex things).

With sector portals, you basically have two sectors of the exact same shape where the roof of one is the exact same level as the floor of the other. To make a floating platform then, you only have to extrude a little bit of roof in the ceiling of one room, and a little of bit of floor in the other. I think.

Hey, I use Reaper MSP because they come in sets of three, and are cheaper than Citadel's paints, which apparently have some issues. I use Citadel's washes like Nuln Oil and stuff though, because it's an easy way for a shitter like me to do shading.
If by iteration you're asking how old the minis are, the answer is a mix of them. I bought the whole Bethesda set last December, and I have a few original and Doom 3 releases from ebay.

Protip: If you have money out the ass, I'd say go for the very expensive first wave listings online. The original '96 releases are made of a different material, have the sculptors' names on the bases, and aren't cursed with Bethesda's copyright on the bottom.

Another thing about the Marauder is that his gameplay may not make him a good rival
Because a thing with rivals is that they usually play like the main character but with differences, sometimes making you think they're cooler than your character
Doom Eternal is marketed around the idea of Doomguy's power level and he's revealed to have a lot of attacks and weapons
Marauder doesn't even have a shoulder cannon or arm blade to resemble the DG, only an axe, SSG and maybe some grenades if those skulls in concept art meant anything
It's probably why he's better off as an enemy, specially if it brings back the idea of enemies carrying the same guns as the player and originally working close to him until they were "corrupted" (Because possessed soldiers don't even have the advanced weaponry you can use and AFAIK, Slayer isn't really tied to the UAC)
Unless he has different phases where he actually ends up resembling Doomguy and even becomes stronger

How about dynamically assignable bagic slots, basically the weapon on the first weapon slot has states for all the spells, and all others inherit from it.
Then, create a set of helper item classes called slot1h, slot2h and so on, and the number of each of those helper items that the player owns is an index of the spell that should be in its respective slot. Then go back to your weapons and redefine their raise states so that they check how much of a given helper item the player has and jumps to a correct spell.
The number of each helper item can be set using an ACS menu that the player can bring up.
This can probably be done easier with zscript, but I've never bothered to learn it.

Why not tie spells to weapons? So you have some basic guns but they also come with spells bound to altfire? If you don't want to go for that, you could make weapon pickups be some sort of passive addon/upgrade to the player's current abilities, I've done that a few times with my projects.

I think you're gonna have to bite the bullet and make ammo pickups be resources for the spells though, for the sake of not making maps shitty and boring, I made that mistake years ago.

Idea:
spells have casting times from 0.5 to 4-5 seconds
Player can pre-cast limited number of spells (starts with 1, increases with progression up to 3-4) to hold onto, but once those gone he has to go through casting/chanting animation as usual.
Different mana pools for different elements (light/dark/fire/ice etc.)

Include alchemy system
Ammo/health become alchemy ingridients roughly sorted into groups from which healing items and mana potions are made. Major powerups like soulspheres, radsuits invincibility etc. become rare ingridients from which special potions with apropriate effects (as well as other potions withmore powerful effects) can be made.

Alternative idea: Playere has a magic staff. He can put magical effects onto it and they all enacted at once and affect each other (like putting a Multiplication+Fire Misile makes a firemisile shotgun. I just got a crate full of old thin client computers and every game that can be discussed in this thread can be played on them, including local netplay and over the Internet. Why throw them out when they're still capable of accomplishing this? Now I'm gonna buy a huge-ass battery bank, a giant solar panel and a shit ton of 4:3 monitors and have an outdoor off-the-grid barbecue party with all of these computers that anyone can come on down and kick some ass. At least, I wish I could actually make this happen.

The story is that they had a test build running with good framerate, but it had a fair bit of texture warping, a particular pet peeve of Carmack's, and he told them to instead go with a more solid renderer, unaware of, probably not considering, that this wasn't a realistic option for the hardware in question.

I imagine it could have been colored by his experiences with trying to make Quake's rendering work, a fully software 3D game together with Binary Space Partitioning (as opposed to Doom, which rendered with BSP trees but with 2D visplanes). There were a lot of problems and dead ends with getting that to render cleanly and fully, and it was taking way more time than anticipated, I can imagine some of the frustration translating to him making decisions elsewhere.

Inset light sources in the wall so that they cast light in a directional cone. Inset light textures in the ceiling so they light a small square surrounding themselves. Passages from a bright to dark room can cast light into the dark room, which both looks cool and highlights the passage. Pillars can cast directional shadows, and pilasters can cast small 45* shadows onto the wall.

IIRC N64 was a truly full 3D system, and didn't have specialised API for handling 2D separately from 3D component. Everything that needed to be 2D had to be put onto a 3D polygon as a texture.
Even HUD elements are done this way.
So anything 2D that is on the playing field looks like a cutout, because it kinda is - a texture painted on a single polygon triangle. It is especially noticable in games like Doom 64 where you can move around such cutout in a 3D space, and less noticable in "2D-ish" games where you don;t have such freedom in camera movement.
There are a few emulation hacks that allow free camera and thus allow to see the real structure of the scene.

The only way around this was to code workarounds and write your own renderer on top of 3D API. Only select few games did it, like Wonder Project J.

Even mainline 2D Nintendo games like Yoshi's Story used sprite-on-polygon way of rendering.

Blood is Monolith's first work though. Here's another take.

>You like The Operative: No One Lives Forever? Monolith's early work was a little too janky for my tastes, but when NOLF came out in '2000, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole game has a clear, crisp 3D aesthetics achieved in a time when technology started to mature, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really give the gameplay a big boost. It's been compared to 007: Goldeneye, but I think NOLF has far more bitter, cynical sence of humor hidden behind upbeat style that rhymes with '60s and '90s alike. In '05, Monolith released this, F.E.A.R., their most accomplished game. I think their undisputed masterpiece is Paxton Fettel, a villain so memorable, most people probably don't listen to his lines. But they should, because it's not just about the pleasures of conformity, and the importance of trends, it's also a personal statement about the studio itself. Hey Vivendi! You like Kingpin: Life of Crime? Xatrix's early work was a little too amateurish for my tastes, but when Kingpin came out in '99, I think they really came into their own - commercially and artistically. The whole game has a gritty, down-to-earth style, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism with handling the idtech2 that really give the game a big boost. It's been compared to GTA, but I think Kingpin has far more bitter, cynical sence of humor. In '01, Xatrix, now Gray Matter Interactive, released this, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, their most accomplished game. I think their undisputed masterpiece is Dark Secret, an episode so standout, most people probably don't even it belongs to the game. But they should, because it's not just about the pleasures of conformity to genre conventions, and the importance of trends, it's also a personal statement about the WWII shooters itself. Hey Machine Games!

>The concept was more along the lines of removal of any significant gain made by the player up to that point in the game. Hence the name, Excavations. The setting of the map reflected this concept. I never really made this public to the rest of the team at that time, it was more of a private joke. I was constantly told by the others on the team that there wasn't enough ammunition in the level, and against my wishes, my father eventually doubled the amount on the map before release, to my cries of, 'screw em, real men punch shit to death!'"
This level was worse than Mount Pain, I had to pacifist certain sections just to not flood the map with a literally unkillable amount of enemies. How did this get accepted by the team?

Anyone got the Quake edit of that old /v/ halloween comic? I think there was a Quake edit. Shit, I might've made it. I don't remember anymore because it's been so long but I want to see it again for nostalgia and spooky season.

I've recently replayed Blood 1 with BloodGDX.
While it's still great,it feels easier.
Like I remember it being more brutal,I'm more precise against the cultists and it feels different too. Not complaining,it is still challenging.
Is it the port or because I played Blood so many times?

Honestly, I wish I could make a single player game based on one of the Quake engines.
I'm just a brainlet, but also they are just too outdated, really. Like, no skeletal animations? That's a huge roadblock.

Best thing I've thought of is using the Xash3D (half life engine remake), which has had Quake ported to it, actually. So then I would be able to use all/most/some Half Life SDK tools with it.
But Xash3D is dependent on a .dll from Half Life for the user interface or something, so that would prevent full distribution, unless there is a way to just use the UI system that Quake uses or something.

So why do people say Quake is the bullet-spongy game when the enemies die faster than most Doom 2 enemies?

- It takes roughly 2.05 seconds to fire 4 SSG blasts in Quake
--- No Quake enemy except Shambler takes more than 6 point blank SSG blasts to die

- It takes roughly 2.27 seconds to fire 2 SSG blasts in Doom 2
--- Most enemies in Doom 2 take an average of 3-4 point blank SSG blasts to die, those being Archvile, Mancubus, Hell Knight, Baron of Hell (takes 6), Arachnotron, Pain Elemental, and some times the Revenant and Cacodemon
