>Golden Axe: Revenge of Death Adder
>Jambo! Safari
>Knights of Valour 2
>L.A. Machineguns
>Lucky & Wild
>Quick & Crash
>Speed Racer
>Splatterhouse

The state of US arcades is a lot better than it was 10 years ago, even if it isn't the same as the heyday. I've found a lot of uncommon games at both permanent locations and conventions.

It's not possible. It takes dedication to keep old games running. Just shit like replacing the crt with an lcd ruins the experience. Once you butcher a game like this, you might as well play the game on your cell phone.

Seriously though, arcades will never make a comeback in the US. Shit like dave and busters or some local "retro" arcade is the best you can expect. Honestly, look at people 20 and under, not talking the niche retro enthusiast, but in general. They don't want to play this old shit. No online multiplayer, no youtube culture involved, no "popularity points" for engaging in playing old games like there is with fortnight. Note: I'm not shitting on old games or our "culture", just saying, kids don't like this shit. It will remain popular for just as long as adults that grew up with it will pay money for it's related stuff. Once the ones alive in "retro" period die, the shit won't be valuable, except to a few wealthy oddball collectors, similar to how a few might collect old radios.

If you want to prove this point, let some young relative of yours in their teens play any arcade game with a joystick, goldeneye 007 or super mario world and get their honest opinion. Don't coach them and tell them how good it is, how it's a classic etc. Let them go in as blind as possible with no idea what they are about to do and get their opinion. At best they will say it looks like a cheap cell phone game.

Think of it this way (assuming you were alive in the retro era), as a teen, would you have liked to go with your parents or grandparents to an old timey dance hall where they played oldies on a gramophone or hits from the 60s on an 8 track or record player? Fuck no, you would be blasting spice girls or bush on your cd walkman. This shit is pop culture meant to be consumed and forgotten, to be replaced with the new thing. People only have so much time, they aren't going to focus on old (trigger warning) "aged" games when there is new stuff to play.

I wish they'd even do that much. In every barcade I've ever been to, most of the games have sticks that are just completely flaccid or have nonworking buttons and other damage to them. People just beat the shit out of them and then the owners don't bother to spruce them up in any way. The problem is the bar is their main business and drunk normies don't give a fuck if the buttons aren't functioning right because they're just having a laugh at some old games for a minute while their beer is being refilled.

>> No.5943542

Another problem modern arcades will have is, when some goons break the sticks/buttons/screen, Taito/Nintendo/Konami/Capcom/Toaplan/etc won't be able to service the machine. Which means you either need to learn to do it yourself as an owner-operator(good luck getting numales/zoomers who know how to do proper machine repairs) or pay someone, who's going to charge you a premium for the privilege.

A good set of MAME machines would be best, but that would also be obvious copyright infringement. You offer Donkey Kong for play on mamebox in your establishment and Nintendo will be up your ass looking for every bit of shekel and shine they can get.

Solution: Run your arcade in a second-world country.

In the next town over is the biggest arcade in Europe. Ten quid to get in, and you have 6 hours of freeplay. There's hundreds of machines, some VR setups (you have to pay a little extra for that floor though), and a great selection of pinball.

>> No.5943765

I see a problem with that. How many times would you want to play Gauntlet, Shinobi or Pac-Man?
I mean, there's plenty of great old arcade games to play, but you are not getting good new games that keeps getting the feeling of amazement arcades had in their prime, when companies like Sega, Capcom, Konami or Taito were developing games at great pace and you could had a suprising new game just visiting the arcade randomly.

The great 2D art, the evolution of 3D gaming, the variety of game genres developed by big companies, the surprise releases, etc. All that is not happening anymore, unless something strange happens. And I believe those kind of things were essential in making arcade culture the great thing it was in the past, so I don't know if not getting any evolution can make arcades last much.

I only miss arcades because of the games with cool input devices. Lightgun games with special guns (looking at you HOTD3), those bike games and cool racing cockpits, and those non-video game electro-mechanical oddities. Call me a casual but most arcade games worth playing and that people are nostalgic for emulate really well, can be played with a myriad of control schemes if arcade sticks aren't your thing at a higher resolution and a much cheaper price of a day or ten out at the arcade.
I miss arcades, but a modern one would just be a hive for drunken normies, so yboys, and improperly maintained cabs all covered in drink spills and food crumbs.

Arcades are in an upswing in three forms:
>Round1/Dave and Busters/Main Event/whatever else "entertainment center" variants. Expect these to be loaded with nothing but new games. Namco is also in the process of launching their own chain of these and Gameworks is creating its first entirely new location in over a decade to cash in on it.
>Barcades based loosely on the New York franchise of the same name. There are two types of these generally: Ones that have a standard lineup of 80s games and 90s beat-em-ups, and more ambitious ones with more out-there game lineups. The later are far rarer.
>Pay at the door retro arcades. You pay like 5-15 bucks and get to play all day. These tend to have the most wild and random selection of games. They're also much rarer than the first two, but they HAVE been popping up across the country and tend to be pretty successful.

Thing is, although arcade games like Pac-Man and Centipede may one day be forgotten, classic console games that /vr/ grew up are being rediscovered by younger generations all the time. I'm 35, old enough to have played Castlevania 2 as a kid. One of my friends on Twitter is in his early 20s and the other day he tweeted about how much he was having playing it on his Switch. The first four games did get released in the US (possibly 5, but I know 6 wasn't). It was during that era when DDR was bringing people back to the arcade and anime was just taking off in the west, so it gathered one hell of a following at the time. Hell, I know of at least two arcades, one in Vegas and one in New Hamshire, where Initial D version 3 is still so popular that you can see people gathering around it on Saturday nights. Both places even still carry save cards for it because so many people play it. It was the game in the west that popularized having a save card feature (in Japan it was Virtua Fighter 4).

That's the reason more recent versions of the game are imported so often. It's a series that still has a huge-ass following in the west.

Most retro non-barcades circumvent that problem by having a console area where kids can play Fortnite or whatever. I know of two places like that in Denver. One is a huge 80s style arcade with over a hundred machines, lots of really obscure shit, and spare CRT TVs lining the walls that's targeted toward the hardcore crowd. The other is a tiny hole in the wall place on the edge of town that has a much more 90s feel to it. The later in particular is CRAWLING with little kids who come for Smash and Fortnite, then wander over to Virtua-On, Shinobi, or one of the fighting games when they don't feel like playing on the consoles anymore. It's only 10 bucks to spend the entire day there, so it's the go-to hangout for kids in that are.

I've been seeing a lot of arcades like that popping up all over the place over the last decade. It's a model that's known to appeal to modern audiences. I've seen them everywhere from Nevada to the East Coast.

Is it culture? What do japs know that we don't?

>> No.5949471

Most cities in Japan have densely packed populations with very thin walls. It's not appropriate to say, have the friends over for some local multi when your living room is about six inches from your neighbors'. As a result, destination attractions are quite popular. An arcade or escape room or whatever makes for a pretty solid night out with the mates. On top of that, Japanese cities have far, far more foot traffic than say, a US city with a similar population would due to a focus on public transport infrastructure. More people walking the last mile means more walk-in business. They also deal more in small change than most places. You're more likely to have a thousand yen in your pocket in change than you are ten dollars in US pieces.

TL;DR: it's basically a perfect storm for those sorts of things. Also why there's more places you can eat really well for like, 500 yen over there. Way more off-the-street business with loose change.
