This. The game wasn't ugly by any means, it had good visuals and music / sfx, and a fun story. But the non-linear level design and item hunting in SOTN causes the same issues in it that Castlevania II had. It makes the experience not as tight and satisfying as the linear games. On top of this, SOTN is bloated and lacks polish. It's mediocre compared to Castlevania or Super Castlevania IV.

Its obviously bait, but these are the same boring replies you could find in literally any other bait thread. It's not even a good SotN bait thread, you could replace the game you used with anything, and neither the OP nor the replies you got would have been different.

In conclusion, this bait post was SOULLESS

People need to realize that when SOTN came out there were people who were fully on the 3D train and had no interest in going back to 2D. Yes they missed out on some good games but plenty of people had that mentality.

By this you mean Sony pushed it to the point where they refused to help fund 2D games.

Can we talk about how, while the Saturn version sucks in most respects, the Maria boss fight was absolutely kino (especially compared to the butchered PSP/PS4 version of it)?

I think SOTN's levels are more interesting to navigate than Simon's Quest, where its difficulty really just comes from not getting good direction on where to go. I'll certainly agree that the combat isn't as satisfying or intense as in Classicvanias, but I don't think the Metroidvanias are as misguided as SQ feels.

The Maria boss fight was a complete fluke. In the developer notes on the Saturn version's disc, designer Yoshinori Suzuki takes about how they had access to a full set of evil-looking Maria graphics that were never implemented in the PlayStation version (which he dubbed Black Maria). This is tied to an unused ending whose voice clips still exist unused in the PlayStation version, where Maria would have tried to save Richter herself but would then be possessed by Shaft, making her an alternate bad-route final boss (it's unknown if they considered the bestiary). The Saturn fight is a reconstruction based on these assets, with Maria's sprites edited to look like her normal NPC self. That's also why the new playable Maria plays so differently from her Rondo counterpart. Later, when producer Koji Igarashi was working on The Dracula X Chronicles, he became aware of the demand for some of the Saturn-exclusive content. He disowned the Saturn version but decided to put the Maria voicework to good use by including the fight scenario from the Saturn version and adding her as a playable character. This time, he was able to start fresh and make sure that Maria played more like she should (since Saturn Maria stems from the unused "Black Maria"), but in the process, the fight itself suffered since she was never intended to be battled. So both the Saturn and PSP developers missed the point in their own way.

Her Saturn boss fight music, GUARDIAN, is still undeniably awesome though.

People also forget that Castlevania was known for being balls-hard across the board up to that point and SotN's emphasis on experimentation in a more lenient and wide-open setting was a very welcome change, even to long-time fans of the series.

Most Castlevania games are almost an hour long, thats pretty much as long as a video game needs to be, and they avoid padding unlike SoTN which has an insane amount of filler

Why did they completely redo playable Maria's sprites in Dracula X Chronicles / Requiem? Say what you will about Konami Nagoya, but at least they made an effort to blend the new sprites in with the non-playable sprites for cohesion. Here Maria has inexplicably different proportions for one moment and has flowing hair in her idle animation like some fucking magical girl. At least replace the existing sprites entirely if you're going to do that.

Guardian is the best thing to come out of the Saturn version (though the other remixed music isn't bad but has mostly been outdone by now), shame IGA's PDST from the Saturn version prevents it from being Maria's official theme.

It's got nothing to do with soul, dummy, it's a consistency issue. She has her PlayStation NPC sprites every other time we see her in the PSP/PS4 version, which the Saturn version, for all its faults, blended seamlessly by making it the same spriteset. Also, look carefully - the playable/fightable version is just a set of new poses, but also a plain different design (note her palette, chest, hips, etc). It also kind of ruins the surprise that you're about to fight her if you've previously played the original. As it stands, PSP Maria stands out like a sore thumb visually and feels very "patched in", which they could have fixed if they got rid of her original NPC sprites and used the new sprites everywhere instead. Now, someone who cared about the intangible thing known as SOUL wouldn't suggest replacing the old sprites, would they?
