This October we discuss why this series is one of the best classic horror themed games out there.

>> No.5924095

- Memorable music
- Challenging game design, at least before IGA ruined the franchise with Shitphony of the Night and its rehashes
- Lots of references to classic Universal films, mythology, etc.

>IGA ruined the franchise with Shitphony of the Night and its rehashes
While I'm not really an IGA hater myself, I enjoyed Symphony for what it's worth, I do miss having Akumatsu on board, the series probably would've felt more like classic vampire fiction if he was still involved. We probably wouldn't have weird japanese shit in the plot if it were not for IGA.

I agree. I loved SOTN back in the day. But it was the beginnjng of the downturn in quality for the Castlrvania series.

I enjoy every game made before SOTN more now.

I played it this summer on a whim, finished VTMB and vampires were in my head so I decided to give Castlevania a try, and I fell in love with it.

I was really surprised just how fun the game is today, it only really suffers from stiff control and some bullshit rooms here and there but it's a solid game nonetheless. The music was fantastic and I still listen to Out of Time to this day, it's just so fitting for the scene. I didn't like Castlevania 3 as much, mostly because I felt it was way too hard for its own good. Stage 7 took me hours and wasted a lot of my time and in the end I had to save state it which I felt bad for. I still rate it highly but I really hated that stage.

I'd say my favourite is Rondo which is a boring choice since it seems everyone loves it, but I found it to be such a fun little game that I 100%'d it twice, from the music to the visuals to the just right difficulty I just adored it. Followed by 1 and then 3.

>>5924357
I find that you don't see the style of a lot of older games today, I enjoy Classicvania a lot more than Metroidvania because I've played tons of the latter, but very little of the former. It felt fresh and fun to play over something I've seen around 10 times now.

Simons quest is my favorite, because that was the one I grew up playing. I like the rpg elementals of it combined with the playforming action elements. I really with the translation would have been on point, I honestly believe it would have been an excellent game on par with zelda 2 of they wouldn’t have had a retarded monkey attempt to speak japanenglish.

Have you ever tried playing the jp version? (Akumajou Densetsu). The US version I remember being bit harder but I think the japanese version is toned down, also Grant Danasty is incredibly useful because his normal attack throws daggers.

>>5924819
Simon's Quest is a pretty underrated game but it's understandable why. I only wish the bosses were... Tougher. I still went out of my way to kill them and I'm pretty sure you get rewarded if you do.

Yeah, I heard it was a lot easier than the US version but this was a few weeks after I had finished it. Still, I watched Arino go through it and even he couldn't get past Stage 7 after 12 hours, and even called it soul crushing.

The main issue with that stage is that it's too long, the first half of the stage is fine since you can breeze through once you get the pattern down but it's just SO GOD DAMN LONG. I mean look at this shit. It's tedious and boring, with the only difficulty coming from the fucking final stair climb and the boss. I doubt Grant could've helped me over Alucard. I know I could've gripped the side of the falling blocks, but that was never the problem. It was always the final stretch.

It's funny, I remember showing my friend how terrible Stage 7 was and this was a month or so after I had finished 3, and my muscle memory was still on point that I could get through the stage up until the final climb without getting hit, by game over'd at the final climb.

>>5924819
The game felt unfinished for me with how there are only three bosses, had little to no difficulty and overall just felt lackluster to play. I could see what they were going for but it just fell flat. I agree that it could've been great. Still glad I played it just to see how it is, it's not a terrible game but just feels empty and underutilized.

He was stuck on the blocks for like seven hours, so he was really burnt out by that point. IIRC he never hit the 24-hour limit either, he just got frustrated and quit. If he had only figured out the block solution earlier he'd have likely beat the game considering the good pace he was on and that the final Dracula battle is far more forgiving in the Japanese version.

>> No.5932568

>>5932513
Nah, I think the higher ups or whatever told him that he didn't have anymore time left but they would let him try the final stage for an hour or so. He was able to get to Dracula's last form but that was it. A shame really, since Dracula in 3 is surprisingly easy after his first form.

As for the stage itself, I doubt he would've been able to do it. By the time he got to the autoscroller, he was always down a life or two and had around 2 bits of health left. Even if he did get to the top, he would need to deal with an Axe Knight or several spawning mummies and if he did get those down he'd still need to go through the boss rush.

Did the HELP ME code exist in the famicom version? It could've been a great bit of help for him by the final few hours. Although I'm not sure what the rules are for GCCX I don't watch that many episodes.

I. Urata who worked on Castlevania III, from a 2chan post:

"I worked on the story, the dialogue, the scenario (though I’m not sure if we actually had a “proper” scenario…?), the character backgrounds, and the maps (the backgrounds and floors). The programmers would then take those completed maps and decide where to place the items and enemies."

What do you guys think of this? This...confused me at first. Castelvania III is a very well-designed game. The levels must have been reviewed over with both the map designer and the people who placed the enemies, and consequently edited to be more thorough. It makes sense as a way to get the first part of the process over with, but the final result are levels that are much less incidental and arbitrary than that.

The first one is the best entry point, as it's an extremely solid game and at a very reasonable difficulty in the overall series. An alternative starting point is Symphony of the Night, which is considered the first proper Metroidvania game, but after that you should hop right into CV I. SotN is way easier than CV I, so playing a Classicvania (stage-based arcade style) is highly recommended if your first game is a Metroidvania. That way you'll get a good idea of both kinds of Castlevania games and SotN might prepare you a bit in case Classicvania could irritate you going in cold.

The dungeon in X68000/Chronicles is one of my favorite areas because of the corpses you find that still have flesh. That takes the ordinary dungeon and suddenly makes it far more visceral and gruesome. You start to realize that some of these people were actually torn in half or had their corpses mutilated instead of just falling apart as bones, and it also provides a greater context to the previous heaps of bones that makes it more disturbing in retrospect.

I also liked the area outside of the first Shaft battle in Rondo of Blood for similarly feeling like a dumping ground for all the sacrifices he needed to make to revive Dracula. We saw the single execution in the intro that had a more personal feeling to it, and then we saw the full context and how horrible Shaft's spells and rituals really were. It's like how the Legion boss in SotN elevates the catacomb where the floor is filled with corpses. With this in mind, I also really like the background of the Grim Reaper's arena in CV III with the rolling mounds of skulls, some with blood on them.

It's a shame that the series never featured a "forest" of impaled bodies like the actual Vlad Tepes made. It was such a perfect opportunity they missed, and one they probably only could have gotten away with on the NES.

Yeah, Bathory is an obvious one. The thing is, I rarely see the Fernandez mistranslation pointed out in places, even on the upgraded Castlevania wiki. This thread actually made me go back to Stage 7 of Castlevania 3 and I have to say that, looking back it's not as bad as when I went through it the first time. I died around three times before completing it.

The first half is tedious as hell, just take it slow on some sections and fast on others and you'll be fine. The mini boss can be cheesed to hell and back so it's not difficult at all. The falling blocks NEED to be bypassed by Alucard otherwise you're stuck there for three goddamn minutes which is not fun at all, afterward you can take it slow and skip more sections with Alucard until you get to the autoscroller, and by then you just need to memorise everything going up.

The boss used to be a big problem for me, the mummies weren't too bad, but I guess I was too passive with the cyclops. He would always fuck me up and I could never get a hit off on him, but since you can easily hit off two headshot hits before he starts to charge he's actually not too bad, and by then you're home free since the next boss after that is easy.

I think it's a stage that is really difficult when you first tackle it and it tests your patience and shit, but once you get it all down and know all the enemy placements it's not hard at all. I still think the game would've been better off if it was cut in half or didn't have the falling block room.

Vs. Castlevania is out on Switch now I believe

I swear the stairs in CV 3 are the least conducive in the series. So many inputs get redirected into climbing the stairs instead, and using subweapons on them in any direction is needlessly difficult.

Or in CVIII's case, Andre Agassi

>tfw Nintendo didn't choose Simon to represent the pre-Iga Castlevania and Alucard to represent the Iga-era Castlevania in Smash

Don't agree, but I'd be perfectly fine with a modern Castlevania that was just a straight-up action game with no RPG elements. At least that Bloodstained minigame did that, I guess.

Super Castlevania 4 or Rondo of Blood are generally accepted as the peak in quality for the classic games, and not plagued by some of the issues of the oldest titles (janky controls, particularly on stairs, being the classic gripe).

HoD also has disappointing bosses and a lackluster enemy roster. Circle of the Moon is better even if its control is way stiffer, it's grindy, and the card input can be annoying.

For the same reason he has maids that politely greet you before flying kicking you in the face.

Can't we just agree that there's a place for the classic art and Kojima's art and be mutually united in disdain for the ill-advised seasonal animu art phase?

SotN could really stand to be harder. Particularly in the boss department. I'll say this about Aria, Dawn, and PoR, I didn't find the Death fights disappointing.

The polite greeting is probably a facade to add on to the notion that something wasn't right. They debut as taller than Simon, throwing knives everywhere, using Blanka's rolling charge, and transforming into monster forms that no subsequent appearance featured.

....are knife chucking maids just a thing Japan has been doing for a while, or did Castlevania inspire a certain Touhou character?

It's pretty much just Animevania seeping into the series.

Sakuya is way older than that. Her main inspo is probably Dio.

Most hated enemy? They don't have to be hard or anything, just annoying to you or you hate their design.

I remember really despising catoblepas in CotM since its design is literally just a bull that barely even moves and they're damage sponges.

Castlevania Sharp X68000 came out in 1993, so when did Sakuya debut in Touhou?
