Sup /vr/. Had this thread on /v/ a few days ago, and someone kept going on about how retro discussion belongs in /vr/. I finished the dump in /v/ anyway, but I figured you guys would enjoy it. So here's my megadump of Early/Beta Ocarina of Time screens. Speculation about the early versions of OOT is also welcome.

I'm pretty sure I remember reading somewhere that in one of its earliest stages, the whole game took place inside Zelda's castle, and it was just a modified version of Peach's.

I'm glad they were finally able to think out side of the early box of what a 3D adventure game needed to be like.

I never really took gritty official art all that seriously in the pre-OoT days. In-game art was cute (with an ominous edge to it, but basically cute) so when the manuals tried to be all ominous and spooky it didn't feel like what Zelda "really" looked like.

I think the thing is that in the 2D days Nintendo could have it both ways. The in-game graphics were brightly colored and relatively cute, but if you wanted something grittier, you could read the manual and use your imagination. With 3D, the graphics are "realistic" enough that you can't pretend anymore and in-game graphics were all you had left.

Meh Never had a Zelda manual, I dont think Id care much about how they look on paper anyway. What matters for me its whats in the game and the enemies in the 2d Zeldas look as cartoony as the 3d ones for me. And it doesnt really bother me really, I dont think the game needs or even wants to be that way. Except for places like bottom of the well or the cementary in OoT which are just as scary as they need to be.

Thats the beauty of OoT, the contrast of atmospheres and emotions make it a fullfiling experience. Is not just pure darkness or pure happy fantasy. There is a vast palette of climates.

It is kinda a minority. I can see it be an interesting experiment to create a LoZ game with a realistic art-style, but I feel that Nintendo has the situation of not being able to take its main franchises too "adult" without alienating parents.

And I don't mean that in "gore and sex" type of adult, but more that you'd end up with a lot of kids breaking out into tears if they see a video game monster that actually is scary looking and not a cartoonish representation of a scary monster.

Also, it wouldn't jive well if a realistic art-style weren't paired up with a more realistic story, so I'm not sure if it'd be too serious looking for a silly "hunt in # dungeons for MacGuffins until you've proven you can fight the villian" plot.
