genesis doomer here

no new features this time, but I made a few changes for a pretty significant performance increase

- copy framebuffer in 3 frames instead of 4 (should reduce input latency, might be possible to do it in 2 frames)
- remove a pointless waitForVsync() call (this alone gave me ~12ms)
- added a vertex cache, to avoid re-transforming vertexes that are used more than once in a map (this saved another 8ms)

this puts me above 10fps in filled mode in the first room, and not far from 10fps in the flashing room.

The actual transformation code can still probably be optimized though, as is the line tracing (which calculates the top and bottom y positions along the lengths of walls), and I'll probably need to rewrite these in assembly to scale to more complex geometry.

I heard one of the tricks these kind of games used was utilise background layers for mono-colored walls/floors without having to re-draw them every time.
If you don't use i, maybe implement some sort of "fake contrast" (as Doom does) to give walls that are at different angles slightly differnt level of brightness make geometry actually visible.

He can't do that though, because he literally did not have access to the source code, Fresh Supply is what it is because it's an approximate recreation on a new engine with none of the original code.

Looking at BloogGDX and NBlood, those are based on the code from the leaked Alpha of Blood, this allows them to actually do a sort of sourceport for real, working from what that code already did.
The reason Kaiser isn't doing this is because it would be illegal, he wouldn't be allowed to use that code, and Atari most likely forbade him to do so in the contract as a way to protect themselves from possible consequences, and of course, they only were given so much time and so much money to work on.

Yes, Fresh Supply ultimately isn't that good, but it's not because of laziness or ineptitude on Nightdive's part, it's the circumstances of intellectual properties.
It would be unauthorized use of illegally obtained code, and a probable breach of contract, something the Russian enthusiasts doing it for free wouldn't have to care about.

The level architecture in general. It's only hallways, corridors, tight ledges and cramped rooms in general. There's no big, creative rooms with a gameplay area that isn't only 64px wide. That is why I find it uninspired and cheap. It's boring.

The difficulty is what got the most complaints from the public... I personally didn't find it too difficult -- certainly not more than Plutonia (which is my favorite iwad), different from Pluto, Sigil it's just a slog, which gives an illusion of harsh difficulty. Filled with bullet sponges, forcing the player to shotgun them most of the time. Yes, sometimes you can use rockets to take Barons and Cacos down faster, BUT the rooms are so small that most of the time you either can't aim or are going to suffer damage from your own rockets.

I require a bit of assistance. I had recently invested in an old computer from the late 90's so I could play games from that era as well as some games from the early 2000's. It was a bit of a bumpy ride at first but things seem aight so far.

I installed Quake 2 recently. I did the Maximum install (400mb). For some reason the music is not playing and I do not know why. I installed it correctly and the CD is in the CD drive, also the CD music option is turned on in the options menu.

Computer Stats:
IBM Aptiva E series 585
Windows 98
Direct X 7
Intel Pentium III (500MHz)
256mb of RAM
Nvidia Geforce 2 MX/MX 400 (32mb memory)
Sound Blaster Audigy
17GB HDD

Also, I don't know if this was common back then but this computer came with both a DVD Drive and a CD Drive. I have tried putting the Quake II CD in both drives but I got the same result.

>> No.5938480

>>5938465
I consider Doom + E4 + Doom 2 their own canon, and Final Doom is two different campaigns, which are different, but could both happen after Doom 2, in either order. Campaigns like Sigil and No Rest For The Living can fit in at any of the points they're intended to, as optional diversions or bridging gaps between parts.

Ultimately I think of most wads as taking place at any of those points, the long Doom 2 megawads usually after Doom 2 or after Final Doom.
Canon and Doom isn't a concept I put too much weight on most of the time though, mostly I'm just in it for the action and the adventure.

I might be able to 110% guarantee you that you're missing the CD audio cable that plugs in from the disc drive directly into your sound card. There's a four pin cable that connects the two because the stream comes from the drive directly. If your drives have that cable connection on their backside, you need that cable.

Some thoughts and very optimistic numbers.
Drawing the screen takes around 33ms right now. Floors, which are say 25% of the screen take 8ms, and walls take the remaining 25ms.
Floors can be optimized to use much more efficient horizontal drawing, which I estimate will cut their drawing cost in half.
Flat color sprites will probably not look very good, so I’ll most likely wait until I implement texturing to add them.
Texturing can be done optimally with about 4 more cycles per pixel (drawing is currently 12 cycles per pixel, so a 33% increase).

floors (8ms) + flat color walls (25ms) = 33ms

with floor optimization and texturing

floors (4ms) + textured walls (33ms) = 37ms

so, very optimistically, an increase of 4-5ms to do texturing.

Covering up let’s say 15% of the screen with sprites knocks it up by 6-7ms to 43-44ms (128x144 screen, 15% is 2700 pixels, at 12 cycles per pixel).
That’s a lot of time, an increase of 10ms over the current build, but I think it’s worth losing 1fps for textures and enemies. There will probably also be cases where a sprite isn’t clipped by geometry and I can use the genesis’s hardware sprites.

Why?

>> No.5939971

>>5939958
Simple math.
6.76MHz. 12 cycles a pixel. Framebuffer is 256x144 pixels but it's drawn a byte at a time, and each byte contains two pixels.

Horizontal drawing is much faster (3-4 cycles per pixel depending on what tricks you use), but it only works if you don't want texturing.

>>5938063
nblood doesn't have 99.9% DOS accuracy of bloodGDX. Any demos using proper freelook like with BMOUSE.EXE desync pretty quick.
it also doesn't have custom difficulty which both fresh supply and GDX have

and as a final note nblood is worse for user content, because you have to replace your blood.ini each time you load a user made episode
BloodGDX just has custom content option you point to whichever folder you've installed it in and it just works right from the game

nblood is only better for the software renderer which is inburdened by jawa and therefore will never ever lag or stutter unlike GDX

The DOS version is easy to get running, and can be configured to use WASD with ease, and the Mac port is technically better in the rendering department, because it can run at a higher res, but you need a PPC mac and or emulator to even think of getting it running. besides the fact that romero isn't the only doom creator, his level design ideas (along with others like peterson's or mcgee's) and how levels in doom worked is something i don't see either 3 or 2016 carry over, probably because levels are now "locations" and not just "levels"

From my experience, most of them are unreplayable trash, and as linear as Half-Life, and it's the worst when they have player conserve ammo as the imposed "challenge". Most notably the speedmap jams. Soulless.

Quake usermaps are usually better because they require more knowledge to be made, and the dedicated community of mappers is signifcantly smaller than Doom's. Doom mapping is literally just drawing lines, which anyone can do with minimal effort.

The few I've seen surpass the quality of the originals are AD maps (most of which are actually too big to be replayable imo) and known classics like the Marcher Fortress.

GZDoom works really well for me. The bloat has been getting reduced a lot, but some of it is absolutely necessary for a mod like Smooth Doom to even be a possibility in the first place. Much of the stupid stuff however are very old poor design decisions that have to be left in place or behind compatibility flags because old mods would break, and you know how people react to such changes (even if they'd make the engine faster and better).

If you can't figure out why Doom modding is more accessible than Quake modding to people with no knowledge of level design, you're probably lacking half of your brain.

Something i can't see happening in Doom modding is "coloring" parts of floor textures with other textures, because when i think of the Cybermancubus from 2016 in a mod, i feel like he'd get more justice with circles or liquid drops based off the green acid floor texture on a wood or other type of floor, instead of green clouds like in D4T.
May also be why some mods go for exploding slime ball.

Also, how the hell do I quickly and cleanly make things like arches, sphere-ish objects, and proper pyramids? Each has advantages and disadvantages. In Doom it's quicker to just make rooms in general. But the annoying thing is that when detailing, all your sectors start criss-crossing together and it becomes progressively harder to change things because of how interlinked everything is. Especially if you're making detailed sector lighting.

and just to clarify:

What's accessible about Doom modding:
- You literally just draw lines.
- Tools are far easier to use.

What's difficult about Doom modding:
- Making an interesting level in a '2.5D' plane (I know it's a colloquial term)
- Making use of advanced features and polishing your levels
- Learning every helpful feature -- I've made a ton of Doom maps but I'm still learning new stuff about the engine and the editor with each new map.

Quake does not come with the texture wad, the textures are instead baked into every map. So Trenchbroom can not fetch them automatically. You need to find (on google) "Quake101.wad" which contains all of Quake's textures, and add it manually.

There are very few examples of a game being dogshit at launch and then magically getting patched into being good. For every No Man's Sky (which took several years and a ton of man-hours/cost which only happened because the devs cared about their product despite its launch) there are hundreds of games that are shit at launch and then are immediately labeled as lost causes by the publisher. DNF could have been salvaged comparing its release to its DLC expansion, if they sunk more time into it after that, but why would you do that when your game had such a universally-negative reception? You'd be burning money, better to cut your losses.

The main thing to be worried about with Eternal, in my opinion, is just the fact that they might patch in some nasty shit that otherwise wouldn't have been in the game, like microtransactions.

There are things I like: general redesigns and environments which try to replicate the classic style.
Then have minor things I don't like:Doom Hunter and Marauder. Too overdesigned and generally not that interesting.

Overall I enjoy the direction they're taking

I'm enjoying them replicating the classic style as well, enemies having their more distinct designs seems like a nice change of pace.
Was there something in particular you felt was overdesigned on the Doom Hunter? I like the cyber-demon aesthetic, so it was nice to see.
Otherwise I agree with the Marauder: The axe looks silly, and the design overall doesn't look demonic enough. I don't know how to feel about the super shotgun

Doom Hunter has too much stuff going on,too overdetailed.
There are pieces that feel slapped in there just for the sake of being there.
About the Marauder, he's like a Fantasy MMO reject, not bad but doesn't feel like a demon either.
Just not memorable.

I see your point now. If it were up to me, I'd remove the chainsaw and shoulder pad, make his gun apart of his arm too. There likely is a point to be made about an enemy having too much of an arsenal.

Many compared it to the Necron Destroyer from Warhammer. Except the latter feels more simple despite the incredible amount of details.
The Doom Hunter feels like they wanted to give him a big arsenal and clearly wanted to show it off. Like an Apocalypse Tank from Red Alert except it flies.
It just has too many odd design choices that coudl've been better if they were more streamlined.

I like that it's attempting to give its take on heaven and the earth setting looks very vibrant but I hope they spice it up with more than just cityscapes.

The redesigns work better than 2016's weaksauce reinterpretations of the monsters, but I'm wondering where they're going with all the gray on the baron of hell. I was also hoping they'd ditch the lame pinky as well but doesn't seem like it. I feel that particular monster exemplifies everything that was wrong with 2016's game sense and art direction. I'm not feeling the archvile either. Hope they keep iterating the green UI to something less shit.

The summoner was good. It stands out over other designs.
It reminds me of the Angel of Death from Hellboy 2.
Come to think of it,Hugo Martin worked with Guillermo del Toro in terms of designs,so it might be his idea to make it look so similiar.
He even worked for Pacific Rim,in fact Doomslayer looks like a green Gipsy Danger and the Cyberdemon looks like a Kaiju,
Heh...
