Good evening, /vr/others! Welcome to the Retro Game Gauntlet!

Start at NES, and work through in the following order:

NES
SNES
GB/GBC OR Sega Game Gear
Megadrive/Genesis
Turbografx16
DOS
NeoGeo
GBA OR Sega Master System
Commodore 64 OR Commodore Amiga
Playstation 1 OR Nintendo 64

You have three days to complete the game without assistance (each game gets three days, though RPGs are allowed a week due to length).

Rules:

1) Savestates are allowed ONLY for the purpose of taking screenshots and ONLY if your emulator/game in question does not have a pause function.


2) Rerolls are allowed under the following conditions:
The game you get requires some sort of hardware functionality that cannot be accurately emulated to complete (eg, Boktai)
The game would otherwise require cheats, hacks, or alteration of the software to complete due to a bug (eg, Cheetahmen II)

3) Playstation 1 games can be given up to 2 weeks to complete if the game is more than 2 discs.

4) If you lose / give up to a game you have to go back one square instead (ie if you gave up a Genesis game, you go back to GB/GBA and continue frome there)

5) For Rule 4, if the game you fail is on the same path as another console, you have the choice to roll for that console instead of dropping down a level.

For games that have a high score or no end, the rule is:
If no high score has been established, set a goal and beat it
if you're playing something another anon already has a high score on, beat their high score
If you are playing extended rpgs/pokemon/whatever you get a week [Depending on the game needs to be asked in thread]

Glad the gauntlet thread is back up. I rolled an NES game while it was down and got Mermaids of Atlantis. It's pretty much just reverse tetris ("blocks" go from bottom to top) but a hundred times shittier. No high score had been set so I just beat the default high score of 20,000 (I got 22,410) which was still pretty difficult to achieve. I took a break after beating that, but I guess I'll roll SNES in a little bit.

Got to 64, and holy shit I found an exploit!

If you alternate the A button and D-pad, you'll repeatedly latch on to a given enemy. Each time you latch on it instantly inflates by one sprite, so you can take out an enemy in almost a third of the time. This is really helping me, I just beat a ten-enemy level without losing a life.

Actually it kinda is. You can only cut in certain spots, and in later levels you don't have the free space or time to cut off large slices. You can create cracks to block their paths, though; that's pretty much necessary to get through the game.

This game is starting to get kinda hard. I haven't run into a super strong enemy like Takeshi again due to my grinding, but I just had two ten-on-one fights in a row before having to fight these five thugs (who by the way kicked my ass because I had almost no health left).

At least I got experience for the first two fights. If you don't beat every opponent in a fight (which, unless it's a really strong enemy or one of those mobbish fights it shouldn't be a problem) you get zero exp.

I wish I could figure out how to not get so many random encounters. Every five steps someone wants to fight me, which wouldn't be bad if I didn't have to go from my hotel, downstairs, outside, through town, into a subway station, taking a train (that will depart without you if you get into a fight while it's there), go to another town, then find a bridge. The little shit has tons of momentum. Not just "mario" momentum, or even "luigi in mario 2" momentum. It takes two seconds to bring him to a stop after running.

The game does play a bit easier when you have a little furry thing to throw at enemies. Problem is, you get that furry thing by running past some bush. What's right next to that bush? An enemy, too close to stop running into.

Unlimited continues are nice, but considering that if I don't finish in 3 hours, I still "lose," I'm forfeiting.

Alright, got into a city, talked to a few people, entered a shop, bought armor, a shield, and a club.

I now move slow as molasses. Hopefully I'll be able to find some place to store my stuff because buying so much was a bad idea. The items were marked as having weight, but I had assumed it meant, you can only carry so much before your backpack gets full, not, the weight you carry directly impacts your speed.

Well, I tossed some 10 Gold pieces out, that slowed me down, and I think I've optimized my weight relative to what boosts my stats the most.

I always have the Pokémon mindset with RPGs, where each level only gives you 2 or three of each stat if you aren't manipulating the game to boost certain stats, but here, my HP doubled, my strength more than doubled -- which means I can actually CARRY SHIT -- and everything else got pretty big increases.

For the first time I made it through the day.

I couldn't find a manual, but I looked up a walkthrough and read the getting started section that explained the basic necessary-to-know mechanics (the walkthrough specifically mentioned that there aren't any manuals floating around and that the information was essentially what was in the manual, so it's not cheating, I didn't get any information not in the manual), and it explained that your character needs to eat every six hours and sleep each night (it specifically said at 23:00, though I didn't go to bed until 23:30 without any ill effects) or else your HP and Attack will steadily decrease, and eventually you'll die of it.

I grinded some more, not leaving the first screen because shit I'm terrified of wandering too far and getting one-shotted by an enemy I'm not supposed to run into yet, then went to the inn in town and slept. I think I'm getting the hang of this, if I stay in town and just grind for the next few days (grinding would obviously be necessary, you need $1000 each night for the inn and $500 each day to buy your food) I might be strong enough to wander around. Anyway, it seems that your game saves itself each time you go to the inn, so as long as I can make it through the day without dying to a Tree Spirit I might eventually begin to make progress in this game.


You know, even though this game is frustratingly difficult, I enjoy it. I just get this sense of accomplishment for having made it through that day, because everything I do matters, each individual second must be utilized to its full potential to make it through, and making it through means you're doing it right.

I apologize for the textwall, but I felt I had to explain my feelings on this game so far. Is this the feeling that good old RPGs are supposed to give you?

The underground city is north-northeast of the Forest City (Starting town), there one can buy the camping gear (Lets the player spend the night outside of towns safely) It weighs 5 pounds though.

Also you chose one of the better classes. Monks and Priests can use all the magic in the game compared to the Warrior and Thief who only get half the spells. You learn more spells in the town after clearing the Tower of Habel (Dungeon you are in).

Huh, it plays a lot differently than Ninja Gaiden. Also it's more fair, and it has fucking co-op. It's in my top 5 the best co-op games on NES.

Fun fact about this game #1 : the game has 3 different names, one per region (Shadow of the Ninja for US; Kage for Jap, and Blue Shadow for PAL)

Fun fact about this game #2 : the PAL version is one of the rare games on the NES to have a GOOD PAL 50hz conversion, that is to say that instead of simply lowering down the speed of the game and not giving a fuck like any other developer would do, they manage to keep the game at a normal speed when doing the conversion
