As a kid I never understood how Farores Wind worked. Only years later I realized its the best of the 3 spells.
The real useless items in OoT are:
Potions/Milk, because of the abundance of hearts
Bombchus, because you can go through the whole game without ever having them.

Farore's Wind is such an ingenuous way to address dungeon progression in the vein of Zelda 1, where you'll frequently find yourself dipping in and out of dungeons for not having a necessary item yet. It took me years to realize you can warp between different temples with it. It's a shame the game literally yells at you where to go next.

Shield I guess could be useful for people that need that protection.

Fire however found to not be that useful since it doesn't really do that much damage and they tend to be better ways to take out enemies.

FF6 feels like magic isn't really that useful. With abilities being around so you don't really need to cast spells outside of healing outside of battle.

But I feel FF has always been kind of that way. At least ATB games. Typically lots of your magic will go into buff/debuff/status. But FF since everything is on a timer it's best to just deal all your damage at once. And because casting tend to have some slight waiting it's just best to attack for a little damage.

For games like Dragon Quest and other pure turn base RPG I feel mana potions are items I use more often.

They were ironically good in the few water levels. They weren't bad overall, it's just the cape was much more powerful. Flying, jumping, and can even kill enemies that the fireballs can't. Mario 3 also had is similar with the coon tail being better than the fire flower. It makes sense they gave importance more to powerups for platforming instead of fighting.
