games also take a lot of time and money to make, the jump in costs from say, famicom dev to even just late 90s was huge. The HD era then proceeded to kill off tons of devs that were maybe just hanging on or were stable but not able to keep up with heavily-funded studios.

You can look to mobile as a big problem that happened for sure, but more likely that is a convenient way to ignore real problems which became more and more apparent in gaming.

And yes, "greedy suits" destroyed everything, but that started in America in the 80's.

it's a neverending conveyor belt, so try not to judge the present too harshly; you could very well regret not enjoying it later on

It's true. Still, It seems that sometimes quite a few cool things happened, especially in Japan. For instance, this video of japanese comedians going to Capcom to create a new character (Norimaro) for a fighting game. There seems to bee a lot of videos of similar weird things happening at japanese game companies. Here are the videos:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qltug4n5wFE
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gyxSixalVVk

Yo can see the different energy of that colorful Capcom compared to the recent making of videos with a lot of balck computers and a more boring atmosphere.

They look like Konami-branded Arino Kachous.
Man, being a game dev during that period must have been incredible. Even in the usually souless Japanese corporate environment you can tell they were having a great time.
I hate how the era of doing a big mainstream game with a core team of three people total is gone forever. Doing all nighters close to release at the time means something completely different than today's AAA crunch time.
