It's pretty far removed from Wolf3D, the only real giveaways are the static ceiling height and 90 degree walls. It's much closer to Doom in practice, or even Heretic since there's a lot of jumping and flying over enemies and barriers.

3D Realms were the ones in charge for DNF until Gearbox took the rights after over a decade of development.
After acquiring it they said "Hey Half-Life is popular right? And many consider Opposing Force almost as good,right? We made that shit so let's make it inspired by it"

Also accoring to certain rumors many devs were in a really bad mood(don't blame them) while making the game,hence why that part turned out like that.

It's an unenthusiastic Build wanking
There's a lot of details, and its good at first until you see same details in similar places in similar configurations
The enemies aren't very fun or interesting
The weapons aren't very fun or interesting.
The game on the whole is well done, but that's it. It's an okay game.
There's also an abundance of secrets, and the game reminds you of it at the end of each level, so there's that, I guess.

Oh and there's either a meme or reference in the style "remember that thing, we remember that thing too, are we cool now?" every 20 meters, as if this game was made by Gearbox or something.

It's not a lot like Wolf3D, barring the 90 degree walls. While Wolf3D had some vestigial arcade elements, and Doom deciding to shed near all of them during the beta, RoTT (spearheaded by the same Tom Hall who worked on Wolf3D and partially Doom), went the opposite direction and leans VERY heavily on arcade gameplay, with various powerup items, and even weapons being treated as powerups. It's basically a mutant between the FPS and the 'shmup'.

You can carry only one rocketlauncher in your heavy weapon slot, and you can't renew its ammo, but there's usually a dozen of them per level, so when you've used one up, you just toss it and can pick up a fresh one. They come in many flavors too, vanilla, heatseaking, swarm rockets, etc, and you're somewhat insulated from splash damage, so the game encourages you to be pretty wild with its weapons. Your bullet weapons have infinite ammo.

The game is mildly formulaic at times, but makes up for it with its crazy charm, juxtaposing photorealistic digitized graphics with balls to the wall action and absurd cartoon violence (a little like Mortal Kombat). There's nothing like blowing up an enemy trooper and seeing his severed hand flipping you the bird in defiance, or incinerating him down to the bone, watching his skeleton collapse with a series of xylophone noises.
For its limited technology, it does the most with it.

Frankly the best thing about AA is the gore, although everything else is good too, bombshell kind of sucks shit though, i like that she has different weapons but all her quotes are just duke quotes read by some uninterested sounding woman.

Try moving less. If you flail around the battlefield, you will get hit by random shit all the time.
Take it slower. Don't rush in, try to keep the crowds reasonable. Try not to get surrounded.
Encourage infights. A few cyberdemons are a great help against a horde of pretty much anything.
In general, it might help to think of a slaughtermap not as a random festival of guts and BFGs, but as a puzzle where you need the correct approach for every encounter. Also, you can go play shit like Touhou - the slaugtermap gameplay loop itself is basically a shmup viewed from first person, so experience in dodging shmup patterns will reflect there.

Really it seems like a too-many-chefs problem. The games writing is constantly pulling in multiple directions, from serious, to irreverent, to satire, to dick humor. Just no cohesive direction for the it to go. You COULD get many of those beats into a story if you paced it out properly, but it's like every level is a manic bipolar episode.

I don't even hate DNF, it has some fun stuff in it. It's bland as hell gameplay wise save for a few nice things. I played on PS3, so I won't be playing it again any time soon due to LOAD TIMES.
Maybe if it goes on sale for 3 bucks so I can play the DLC. Not until then.

A new Duke game, or the 2002(?) build being released would be fantastic. Get some modders from the Unreal community to patch it up and ship it. Erase this one from the canon.

It needs competent writers who don't follow whatever modern trend to make a joke,it will become awfully dated then.

Yeah, the original had an opengl renderer that had colored lights, which was the intended way to play for high end users, in fact quake 2 user levels became infamous for terrible use of colored lighting. Frankly I find that combining opengl with setting up your autoexec to have square particles and unfiltered textures is a kind of best of both worlds situation, although software does have a certain charm without the colored lights.

I posted the screenshot of the cum room and it's a secret room, that's where most of the bad jokes and porn shit are, the guy who made it is obviously far too horny but the gameplay is solid, it has all the 'official' duke packs, the original episodes plus a new episode of some maps that kind of fail in the same way that ion fury's maps do by just being too big and clustered. I'd like a mod for (Not Brutal) Doom that lets me summon Doom Marines or something similar that will follow me around in a level and help with enemies on slaughter maps. Brothers in Arms achieves the general idea but for some reason the author put all that work into it and balanced it like dogshit. The individual units in that one are really overpowered and can practically take on an entire level by themselves.

The closest I've found to a fully featured version of this are those Deltarune characters but Undertale is cringe so I'd like something that's more lore friendly to Doom.

Really surprised I haven't been able to find more companion mods like this. Any suggestions?

for all my blood playing patricians, I don't know if to recommend the way of ira or not, now that I've finished it

for one it's blood made for casuls, as anyone who've played monolith maps will immediately notice (won't go into detail on all the MERCIFUL design choices in it)
if you're a lightly broiled guy, you should play well done AND picthfork start, enemy numbers don't change much based on difficulty I don't think

the takeaway at the end of all this is TWOIRA in my opinion has only 2 good maps, map 6 dark abbey and map 8 aka the boss arena, it was just a fun boss rush type deal

I liked it. Shelly was an underdeveloped character, but has some moments. The antagonist is better. The world has a lot of character though. It's not overdetailed in it's level design, but it does have an issue with the visual details being spread evenly out. Like there isn't a single stretch that lacks some doohicky or gizmo or dirt or litter. Which makes it sorta blend a tad. It's not a big deal.

So I was taking another look at some of the more or less horshit variety of Powerslave levels, and so far I can say this:

Levels 00+09+15: (use Marathon 1, Jason Jones' levels primarily, as an apparent point of reference, add a '"unique twist'" to it, consisting of mixture of) Legend of Kyrandia 3: Malcolm's Revenge + probably, one of the Ishar games (by the way, contrary to mobygames, they HAVE been officially ported to and published for Macs, see the "garden").

Levels 01+04+11: (McGee's levels primarily for Doom 2 and possibly Ultimate Doom +) Michael Raymond-Judy's levels for OG Heretic (he was the main mapper on the game and did like 2/3 to 3/4 of the levels there) + probably, Waxworks.

Levels 02+10+14, 03+08+13 and 05+17+19 pending, levels 06, 07, 12, 16, 18 and 20 in both versions I will eventually review separately as I don't consider them being horseshit.

Part 1 -

Basically, a BSP tree splits up space into halves.
If you look at the attached image, you’ll see an example of how a bsp tree could split up the space in a world. Imagine the three colored shapes are sectors that are connected to each other by the arrows.

If you are inside sector 0, left of split plane 0, you know that bsp node 1 is in front of bsp node 2, which also means that you know that sector 0 is in front of sector 1 and sector 2.

Traversing the bsp tree according to which half is in front of the other half according to your POV gives you a perfect front-to-back sort order of the sectors in the game world.

In a doom engine, sectors are convex, so we know that no wall in one sector will obscure another in that same sector. So as long as we draw sectors in a front-to-back order, and never redraw to the screen, we will have a correct output image.
Basically the only clipping you have to do is between sectors.

Say we’re in sector 0 and ignore the details of bsp traversal, we’ll be drawing sector 0, then 1, then 2.
We draw all the walls in sector 0, adding to a clipping buffer for each solid wall, so we know now to draw there again. Since doom doesn’t have arbitrary 3d geometry, this type of clipping is a 1D problem and very efficient.
Then we draw sector 1's walls, clipped by the walls already draw in sector 0, then we do sector 2's walls, clipped by sector 0 and sector 1.

Part 2 -

For invisible walls, and walls with holes in them (basically portals) there is a complication, we need to draw the top portion of wall down from the ceiling and the bottom portion of wall up from the floor, which means we need multiple sectors being drawn to the same columns, so clipping portals is now a 2D problem. Any further walls drawn will need to be clipped by these drawn portions, which is one of the reasons why drawing isn’t as efficient as in wolf3d (for every wall we draw, we need to check vertical clipping on a per-pixel column basis. wolf3d just draws full walls from ceiling to floor every time).

A portal engine can use almost the same exact drawing algorithm, except it needs to discover the drawing order of sectors at runtime based on the player’s current sector, and any portals within that sector.
Draw all the walls in the current sector, then handle all the portals in a sector, and if they’re visible, add the sectors attached to them to a queue, and repeatedly process the sectors in the queue and so on until there are no more.

Other advantages the BSP has comes from the fact that it splits the world in half at each branch, which allows you to do efficient collision detection, and efficiently determine what sector a point is in. A portal engine needs to search all sectors to find the sector an arbitrary point is in, which is pretty bad. Collision detection is usually better since you know what sector an entity is in to start with, so you have a good starting point, and can check neighboring sectors first.

Some advantages portals have is that you can point a portal to an arbitrary sector, for various effects. You can point a portal back at the same sector it’s in for a mirror effect, have geometry that loops in on itself, etc
You can also modify a portal graph at runtime much easier than a bsp tree. In some cases culling can be more efficient at runtime, but in some cases it can be worse than a bsp tree.

Mod dumpsters are awesome. For every good map/mod there are several that do not match it, but at the same time it shows there are active people still playing the game which creates a draw to both potential new players and a return for older players.

Honestly, a part of me wishes I had kept an archive of everything I have come across on the internet because I have seen a lot of creative, weird, funny, and even profound things on it. And what happens with time? They're lost and forgotten.

A lot of doom maps suffer this fate actually. There were some maps pre 2000s that I simply can't find anywhere. Not on the Idgames archive, wad stations, etc.

Settings is not what I'm talking about. Doom Builder and the likes weren't around back then and the best people had were editors, that others created, that when they compiled the levels together would make it where invisible walls you never intended would appear. Causing all sorts of glitches and what not. People completely independent from the actual team that worked on doom are more of a credit to the current community than the creators are. However, they did create the foundation. But look at the first call of duty, it's player base is significantly lower than doom, primarily because it's packed like OG doom was.

Just the game, no editors, no decorate, ano ACS, no Zscript, etc.

Ever try assimilating a mapset/mod with custom assets into a mod? Ever try adding graphics without a patch file or naming the texture the same as it is in the game to literally over write it? These things were impossible years ago.

Thanks to the community using the game as a base to express their creativity is why doom is what it is.

Everyone has a part in it in some capacity, but if doom stayed as it was on initial release, it wouldn't be as popular as it is today. Remakes would still be had in the gaming industry because that's what they do and have run out of original ideas because of money grubbing practices. Their thinking is going towards monetization and appeal than actual ideas for games.

Anyway, the point for all that was to fish for references. Which yielded me Ishars, Waxworks (I already knew from multiple other sources was worthy of attention) and Amberstar(moon?). Whether my guesses about them were correct I intend to verify only much later.

We can go with 3 theories:

1)The Dukebot was sent in the mansion and the real Duke was captured.
The Dukebot is a tool for Dr Proton for conquering the planet.
The real Duke is the one in the DLC.

2)Everything in DNF campaign was just a simulation by the Dukebot perspective. Only the DLC actually happened.

Consider this: what if the entirety of DNF was an inside job by the president?

Duke was a pretty badass dude for over 10 years, to the point where almost everyone considers him something of a god. Especially considering he save the goddamn world single handed in DN3D. Something like that would make anyone of a high power jealous. Someone like the president.

The president, wanting to be considered a hero in the eyes of the public, contacts Dr. Proton and commissions him to knock out Duke, kidnap him, study his brain, and use the information gathered to build Duke robot clones of his own. He would then have Proton use the clones to attract the aliens by getting them onto the moon, inciting a war between man and the aliens, only to attempt to end it by signing a peace treaty with the Cycloid Emperor, which, should it succeed, he would only do for the sake of the fame and recognition he'd get from it. The president would also have "Duke" be a complete dick to everyone around him as a means to destroy the real Duke's reputation, and shift the public's attention to him instead when he, as mentioned, makes peace with the aliens (or at least attempts to do so).

Also, how else is Dr. Proton able to "control" Area 51 until the very beginning of the DLC, when the president's dead and the chaos supposedly ended? Well, Proton didn't "invade" the base until the president died and the vice president (being sworn in as the new president) began to cover up the job by having Proton killed as a means to do so. So suddenly he's "invading" Area 51, despite the fact he would need SO MUCH TIME to be able to control as much of it as he did by the DLC (the reason he was able to obviously being because he was given access by the president to Area 51 in the first place). Once the president died though, you would think that's the end of it, right? No. Dr. Proton proceeds to attempt to kill the real Duke, stop the aliens with his clones and then proceed to take over the world from there, or possibly to continue what the president started, although the former's more likely.

On a side note, the main game likely has not one, but TWO Duke clones. Even if you're Duke Nukem, you cannot survive a nuke like at the end of the game from that distance. The Duke clone died in the blast and was replaced with another clone to pose as Duke again to convince the public he survived and that he wants to run for president. This is where Dr. Proton takes control of the operation as the president is killed by the Emperor before the blast, and Proton still has full control (or at least a lot of it) over Area 51.

The weapons are pretty limp for one, a lot of altfires are extremely questionable. I feel like enemy variety is weak too, the head-spiders and drones are a pain in the ass to fight unless you use bowling bombs or the revolver altfire. Texture work, map design, and the soundtrack are fucking great though.

Imagine an inventory item/power up in a mod that lets you turn one of your weapons into a stationary automatic turret/sentry type of gun where it attacks enemies on its own.
Like, you select a rocket launcher for example and have it do its job and it either lasts for a long enough time or demons can "kill" it and it goes back to your arsenal because the context is that you possessed the weapons with some souls, since the pick up would have been something soul related.
You can also pick up the weapon at any time you wanted.
It still uses your ammo, even from a type that is used in more than one gun (like you wanna use a BFG and make a Plasma Rifle into the soul/sentry thing for example).
