It looks like he's going more for a One Monster Per Game / Franchise style trifusion. Maulotaurs have nasty melee attacks & the ability to reflect projectiles, Alien Drones from Duke3D are very mobile with their jumps & can shrink you, and Shalraths from Quake have some of the most aggressive homing projectiles I've ever seen, which they can rapid-fire at you from a good distance. Very nasty trifusion.

I don't like most of the effects,
weapons feel samy and loose the specialisation niches they had before, becoming more homogenised, though that is common for mods based on Brutal,
Overall they feel like different kinds of lazers instead of magic.
Recoil out the wazoo on every weapon
Basic attacks becoming incrementally stronger with levels
Crossbow behaving like shotgun instead of having different kinds of projectiles with separate autoaim.
And so on.

Improvement I can suggest:
1) giving a recoil tweak/removal option
2) weapon powerup-per-level slider/removal option
3) Reworking weapon at least in the effect side so they feel more like magic and less like lazers, change the projectiles and hteir speed, change soundeffects to less lazer-y ones, reworking crossbow
4) Adding new monsters maybe out of the mods scope, but I feel like adding "ranked up" variations of the monsters to the roster as player grows in levels might alleviate the aforementioned power growth. Just make sure to leave the old weaker versions in so thyat player could compare their power and feel the growth if that's the effect you were aiming for. Maybe 3-4 monster tiers or so, I'm sure finding monster variants on Realm667 or other sources would not be that difficult.

Anyway, It's kinda hard for me tto play it because I have my own ideas about Heretic-inspired mod (that is much, much different from yours) and every time I try to play it I can't stop thinking about how I would've made things differently... If only I wasn't such a lazy shmuck and knew at least a thing or two about programming lol (or could draw at least). But since I can't do either, you'd be right to call me a "typical idea guy".
However that may be, the criticism above is as sincere and objective as I could provide. There are some magic mods that make it feel like magic, but yours doesen't, and the "magic" part is what attracts me the most in Heretic.

Style-wise or genre-wise?

Genre-wise, the other attempts to do a shooter-like game out of RPG/dungeon-crawler-like, at the time, were Pathways into Darkness, System Shock and Cybermage, could also probably count in Battlespire and Descent into Undermountain (aka the most broken game in gaming history). Out of those, Cybermage is probably by far your best bet. Problem is, style-wise it's completely different, as the setting is essentially Shadowrun. Anyway, it's a very good game in my opinion, and I advise you to play on hard, keyboard-only, read the manual prior to playing, invest your time into coming with an actually comfy keyboard layout (which, in contrast with System Shock or Descent, CAN be done, and isn't even all that hard), and skip the tutorial level, which, somehow, is a MUCH worse introduction into the game, than its actual first level.

If you are primarily interested in style, like a weird fusion of post-apocalypse, some futuristic plague, mutations, weird cults, flesh meets metal, yadda-yadda, that's basically Druuna comics. Games have dabbled in this style here and there, problem is, there isn't a game you can point to in regard to this style, and say "this is it". Well, maybe Strife is.

Like, there is a Druuna game actually (an RE/Bioforge-like). Problem is, it's very infamous, and playing it is pure torture, and should be done ONLY if you know for a fact what you are getting into (and memorizing the manual by heart too). Besides, it contains far less organic looking trash and waste melting into each other, than the comics it's based on, is much more about straight megastructure. You could try Bioforge, actually, come to think of it. It goes into different direction, but it's a memorable game regardless. AitD/RE-like, again.

Out of shooters, right now, I can only like remember last few levels of Archangel, but it's a shitty polish tps, and those levels are much better being watched on youtube, if at all.

Not liking the effects are very fair, i've been shying away from the BH assets with each update and making them not-default anymore.
The "lasers" comment is one I get a lot, yet nobody can really give me a solid answer for it. The base weapons in heretic were generic as fuck, and between the 4+ attacks for each weapon, I like to think they have a bit more variety to them.
Recoil is definitely something I could implement an option to adjust, consider it done.
Attacks scaling with level already has an option to disable, and in the next version leveling will be much slower by default (though unlocks will happen at more frequent levels)
The mod isn't aimed at using autoaim, so each update I'm finding new things to fix regarding it (like how headshot hitboxes for the monster mod will no longer respond to autoaim.) In regards to how the attack works, the crossbow "splinters" the bolts as they fire, so it makes more sense than just random extra bolts appearing off to the left and right like vanilla did.

As for your suggestions, the "laser" sounds are actually slightly modified vanilla heretic equivalents, with the exception of the gold wand. I do plan to rework a lot of the sounds (especially adding more variety to the melee "whoosh" noises) but "more like magic" is kinda nebulous. According to audio design i've researched that basically means add more random chimes and xylophones and shit, which I don't think is what people are looking for. The search continues tho.
The monsters have been getting multiple extra attacks, and the goal is to have each one have two variants (like mummies and imps currently do.) Some of the are already complete, but its been a process, especially in terms of balancing and playtesting.

That post might sound a bit defensive, but some of those things are from newer versions that you might not have tried since you didn't care for an older version, which is pretty understandable.

Also, by the way, Archangel was remade from the first attempt to do a Witcher game. Basically, its first half is what remains from that attempt, then in second half, "Geralt" goes first in Omikron-like near future, then in Druuna-like far future.

But that's not the reason I write this post. Come to think of it, second third of Quake 4 (with you, alone, stroggified, exploring like the back side of a strogg base) contains some fairly similar stylistic sensibilities. It is very different, at least, in vibe, from the game's beginning and ending, so it might be worth a look into, if you haven't played that game yet.

>> No.5914980

>>5914973
Should also note, I love feedback like this. Stuff like the recoil option is just something I haven't really thought of while updating things. Also if anyone can give me some good examples or direction for the magic audio stuff, I'd appreciate it.

Since most of the abilities I had planned are in the game, a lot of the work now is on smoothing out edges, getting classic caster mode is simple (no ability bloat) but still frantic, and the monster mod caught up and fully standalone for other gameplay mods.

I think the "lasery" impression (at least for me) comes from them being fast traveling beams that give off a very star-wars-esque feel which immediately evokes "lasers" association.

In Heretic, Wand and Claw were hitscan weapons, while Hellstaff was projectile.
In this mod they are all fast traveling projectiles, and Hellstaff is now a fast traveling projectile too.
IMO wand and claw should be either hitscan, or a different, more magical form of projectile (maybe slower traveling even), instead of a beam.
Overall the projectiles should be diversified in nature.

one suggestion is to make the wand shoot more like its Hexen inspiration (if you rip off one thing, might as well rip off whole), i.e. be a small spark that leaves a trail of magical dust behind it.

Overall I think smoke should be replaced with more magical sparks/particles.
Now that I think of it, smoke might be one of the reasons behind "technological" associations, while sparks/lightnings may give more "magical" associations.
Maybe try and incorporate something like Blood's tesla gun shock trail effects., maybe magical runes evaporating into the air after the impact instead of sparks.

Yeah, that's the easiest way. You can do it with a variable amount of paint-over depending on your 2D vs 3D skills. Even just a rendered out mannequin will help with pose and perspective if you paint over it.

There are some really talented people out there who hand-paint from scratch though.

The best way to use it is to do taps, like you can do with the chaingun in Doom, let it finish its burst and then click again to keep firing, rather than holding down, this keeps spread down by a lot. The spread also reduces throghout the game as you upgrade.

Strife's arsenal is a bit lopsided though, I agree.

If you mean the one with the tortured faces, that is probably one of the textures which Adrian drew by hand with a pencil on paper, then scanned in and processed.

The link is it was a direct competitor of Myth 2: Soulblighter, published by Monolith, no less, a company that also did release Shogo of its own around the time (some sensibilities from which could also be recognized in Halo). That would explain why someone at Bungie would be even aware about that game's existence.

Also, make no mistake, Russian or not, it's a downright brilliant game. Had absolutely dog-shit writing and world-building though. the point with this is that it fills the gaps between

other uses include making faster-than-1-bullet-per-tic weapons not clump their shots and spread the shots along the aim-sweep

Master Chief sure fought against eldritch abominations but overall he's so limited compared to Doomguy, Quake Ranger, Duke Nukem, Serious Sam, Caleb, Marathon Officer, Corvus, Lo Wang, Gordon Freeman. And YET he's supposed to be stronger than all of them according to his games.

i liked how 2016's bosses have multiple attacks
even if these new games aren't that good and occasionally, make you think doom 3 did some stuff better, they still have some good ideas in them, it's not surprising they inspired a lot of gameplay mods

>> No.5918819

I feel like 2016 had a whole slew of ideas that operated better on a deeper level than Doom 3's. For a good chunk of its run, 3 felt like playing a botched version of the original games and the only real thing I can take from it is the sense of progression you get from navigating the maps and the atmosphere to a certain extent.

Gameplay wise all 2016 needed was more varied encounters, the enemy design was there. They just didn't venture forth to make the combat actually play into the levels. The classic maps for instance are pretty fucking tricky to beat if you're leisurely strolling about.

>> No.5918827

>>5918796
I actually like Doom 4, probably a bit more than Doom 3 (which I'm a biased apologist of), I do think that the game has some flaws, mainly for how monster encounters are rather formulaic (monsters come, you get locked in, have to kill them to proceed), this being something the devs admitted was too frequent and which they said they wanted to do differently for Eternal, but beyond that, I find it to be a pretty damn decent game, a solid 7 out of 10.

Part of that is that it has some decent bossfights, which iD games have historically been fairly deficient of.

On bossfights in iD Software shooters, let's look at this particular history;
>Wolf3D; Hans Grosse is first, nothing special, but he's ok as a first boss, the rest of the bosses do fairly little different, Schabbs throws physical projectiles, but the fight is much the same, and then after that they're mostly doing these things, until Spear Of Destiny, where Angel Of Death finally shakes up the formula a little bit.
>Doom; E1M8 is an alright boss encounter, E2M8 has a decent buildup, but requires no complex strategy or particular concentration, E3M8 is kind of weak, particularly if you found the BFG9000, E4M8 doesn't do much differently
>Doom 2; Icon Of Sin is kind of cool in his presentation I guess, but he feels kinda like a last minute addition, TNT has a weird take on it, Plutonia does its best to make the concept more challenging
>Quake; Cthon was passable as a first boss, and huh, there's not really any other bosses in the game, oh well.
>Quake 2; they're all actually kind of passable, but ultimately not too remarkable
>Quake 3; the final boss is a multiplayer bot
>Doom 3; big spider lady is ok, Kelly is pretty neat actually, the Guardian is actually pretty novel and challenging, this was their best bossfight to date, Cyberdemon is an absolute joke
>Rage; that giant monster guy in the ruined city which you need to fight with the rocket launcher, he's actually pretty decent, also there's no other real bosses in the game, not even a final boss

So, seems like Assassin2015 from Vectorman devs, "shitty Doom clone" it's widely considered (as if), went on to influence, at the very least, DroneZ/CyberZone, original Iron Storm and Unreal 2: Awakening.
You know, what you don't realize concerning the question of influence is that it doesn't really matter in this context what games PLAYERS played and play (meaning whether it sold, whether it became famous and whether it's considered a definite go-to classic nowadays). It matters what games the DEVELOPERS played - and ended up being impressed with.
Two games continue to reappear fucking everywhere: Myst 3: Exile and Messiah [2000], how many of you influence debating fucks have actually played them? I know I did, for once.

That's the accomodation for the differences in how Always Run option works.
Vanilla Quake overrides variables, discarding the modifications you made to them
Quakespasm multiplies values separately, while keeping variables intact. Also Quakespasm uses run speed as default and derives walk speed from it

In fact, all this is explained in the very same document.

It isn't the only game utilizing floating cursor combat, you know. What it IS though is one of the first cinematic linear shooters. You are in realistic near-future environments, there are no health kits (armor regenerates, health gets reimbursed at the start of each level), no ammo (both blaster shots and plasma grenades recharge). The central element of the game is the banter between the main protagonist and the sassy handler. On one hand, failure to follow handler's directions results in "Oh, fucks" or outright instadeaths. On the other hand, the descriptions of what you are meant to do are fairly loose. In other words, the point of the game is you have to constantly think, on the fly, how what you hear from handler applies to what you see around you
And yes, there are "hold on while I hack this door" and "flee from this yet indestructible robot for your dear life" gameplay sequences here too, so it's cinematic shooter alright. In fact, this is what could be up with Unreal2's affection with "defend from WWWWWAVES of enemies".

It's a small neat game, clunky combat and constant mini-cinematics (well, "door opens" and "last enemy from squad dying" types of cutscenes are predictable, so they cease being jarring quite quickly) nonwithstanding.

You know what else, I think, it COULD also influence? Shogo. And with it, the whole slew of Monolith's cinematic games. Now, that would be a number, eh?
SiN, by the way? Max Payne with its in-engine cutscenes of last enemy dying? Could be as well.
See, maybe the novelty of this game has long since worn off. But once upon a time it WAS novel. And it DID produce "wait, what? you can design a game like that as well?" reaction in some people.

The first one is as good as it gets, the second one isn't too shabby, then they gradually get weirder and less Doom, almost feeling like old Team TNT stuff, you know with Icarus : Alien Vanguard, and Daedalus (and I guess also Perdition's Gate and Hell 2 Pay, just a little), where there's this idea that the monsters aren't from literal hell, but are aliens, and you can tell the authors don't really want to do something about hell, but rather want to do a sci-fi alien story (and the authors are oldschool Star-Trek novelists, which will explain certain things to you if you ever watched TOS).

I wouldn't call them bad, but I also wouldn't call them great, if you looked at them in a vacuum, separate from the games, they're ok.
They don't actually exist in a vacuum though, they're an adaption, and they can be pretty questionable in that regard, particularly as the books go. At the same time, I also see why some things were done the way they were, because you'd need to write some new material around the premise, as a silent protagonist quietly killing monsters doesn't exactly make for engaging storytelling, you need more characters, you need other things to happen, you need to expand on the base idea. On that point, arguably they should maybe not even have been made, depending on who you ask. For their flaws, I do not hate them.

There's also some libertarian soapboxing from the authors as the books go, points I may agree with, but also maybe wouldn't have inserted in a story like this.
Apparently one of them owns the bronze canon which Hunter S. Thompson had his cremated ashes fired out of as part of his funeral arrangements. Make of that what you will.

>>5920092
>and the worldbuilding there is quite interesting
Oh, I'll definitely say that, the authors have some interesting ideas, even some philosophical ones.

A lot of the weirdness made much more sense to me after seeing the original Star-Trek series.

It's a ridiculous mod that makes Doom's gameplay into a tactical shooter. I hated it at first, but now I love it more than any other gameplay mod, except for maybe demonsteele and dakka.
The game is much harder but also very rewarding, you can still become incredibly overpowered and the weapons are all 10/10 and incredibly satisfying to use. You can also just blow a fucking hole through a door with a HEAT rocket or a door charge if you don't feel like finding a key.
I could write a huge post about how much I love it but it's better to just try it out, just read the manual first, it's one of the mods where that's really, really necessary.

I'll just write this here because PiD is a game, important to me.
- This game has unique combat in that it requires you to evade projectiles in a web of extremely narrow splitting pathways
- The turns are slow, you don't have time to turn while the projectile is already in the air, thus you have to evade blindly
- In order not to evade right into a wall, thus letting projectile connect, when evading blindly, you have to remember for a fact, where the openings are in relation to your character in a second's reach in each of 8 direction allowed by movement keys (forward, backward, strafes) at every moment
- This leads to an extremely taxing gaming process, where you construct a sort of image of the utmost immediate to your character surroundings, and update it each step, each turn
- By doing so you effectively shift point of reference from objective, that of the level, to subjective, that of the character. The world thus shifts and turns around the character, the latter unmoving, just like you, the player, before the monitor, pressing the keys, while said monitor depicts virtual world shifting and swirling around your character
- Game thus makes it clear you are not moving anywhere, the virtual world moves in relation to you
- Something obviously changes for you though as well, during that process. What? You yourself are changed by means of memorizing ingame events thus gaining experience and thus acquaintance with the game
- This makes it apparent you voluntarily observe ingame virtual world. Why?
- In order to see what happens next. At the end of the day, it is you, who initiates communication with the game by means of keypresses, and at the end of the day the ingame world merely reacts to said keypresses. Nothing in ingame world has any agency, the way you do
- And at the end of the day that agency is fueled by your curiosity. This is what "Pathways into Darkness". You choose how to interact with the game, not knowing what is to happen next.

Also, there is also a supporting ark to this argument, concerning ingame and promotional contant, including the Dreaming God, both versions of the impossible screenshot, as well as the question of Walther P4, but - ah, fuck it.
- Main game, Demo A1 and Demo 2.0 are effectively different campaigns, that share some of the same items and enemies in different contexts
- The screenshot in the center of the PiD's box blatantly contradicts both Demo A1 (not included in the box) and Main game on multiple accounts in clearly intentional manner. The situation depicted simply cannot ever happen in either. The remake of this screenshot, related to 2.0 version of the game, contains even more such contradictions
- The instance of an official screenshot blatantly contradicting the game has continuation in the form of game blatantly contradicting recorded history in its allegedly "realistic" part, point in case being Walther P4 being anachronistic in relation to how you get it in the context of the game. This emphasizes the game being pure fiction to begin with
- The last room in the last piece of content created for PiD, Demo 2.0, contains an easter egg dungeon, by the end of which you realize you were moving alongside letters of the word "Carnage", writing them with your moves, all along. This is silly in a fourth-wall breaking way: there is no reason for any ingame entities to create a place where the walls spell the word "Carnage". The Easter Egg dungeon being part of the same level it is invoked from, makes it apparent there isn't any notable difference between "normal" and "abnormal" parts of the levels in the game. In the main game, by the way, by using Easter Egg wrongly it is entirely possible to put yourself into an immediately apparent, but unforeseeable Dead Man Walking scenario, forcing you to reload. All of this, again, emphasizes the fictiousness of the game

- So, by now, we have several means of the game emphasizing fictitiousness of the main game, as well as both demos. In other words, they are implied to be equally fictitious, that is, mutually contradictory but equally valid interpretations of the same concept
- Or, speaking in in-game terms, different dreams of the same god
- Saves have physical implementation in the ingame world: the savepoints, red runes
- There being a blue rune mandatory for the completion of all three PiD's campaigns, also validates the red rune, it being also a rune, as canon
- This emphasizes the theme of saving and loading in the context of the game (except in Demo A1, which still has free saves and no red runes)
- Taken together with the above written, different loaded games from the save are, again, different dreams of the same god, even if in the context of the same campaign
- This emphasizes the game having no way to predict player's actions EXACTLY, thus emphasizing the player's free will (even if freedom of realization of that will is somewhat restricted by the rules and content of the game), thus emphasizing player interacting with the game out of his own volition.

doesn't happen with prboom+ so both the video/browser and prboom+ are playing

Most games offload 90% of their load to GPU, since graphics is what takes the most clculations in them.

GZDoom uses high level programming for all actors and most actions, which opens it up for modding, but is ridiculously inefficient resource-wise, and can not be offloaded to GPU. That's why playing GZDoom while doing something else gonna take a heavy hit on GZDoom's performance.

Yes there is. A bloated arsenal is not a good thing.
If you're gonna have lots and lots of weapons, and many of them are similar to each other, you need to have some sort of inventory system or slot system where you change that stuff out.

If I press the 1 key, why should there be multiple different pistols on that slot that pretty much do all the same thing?

>> No.5922213

>>5922193
I would argue it wouldn't be good even if they had their own ammo pool, I think for your typical shooter, if you're gonna have a weapon, it ought to be distinct in its role from other weapons.

If it's really similar to an existing weapon, either one of them needs to be cut, or you need to be able to switch them out and abandon the one you don't need, or you don't always get to keep all weapons between levels/missions, and you don't get to have them in your inventory at the same time during normal gameplay.

I think it's hard to argue it won't be a frequent inconvenience otherwise.
