Do you think some good hacks of MD Super Street Fighter II will surface?
I still enjoy SF2 Special Championship Edition to this day, but the Genesis SSF2 port always struck me as a letdown.

>> No.5911620

The argument for why the Genesis port had such terrible music is that SSF2 is a CPS2 game that relies on sampling (more true to the SNES) instead of FM synth like the CPS1.

Meanwhile, Capcom decided to make a bespoke FM synth track for the X68000 port and it sounds great. Leagues above the Genesis port.

Well there is the Pyron color hack, and Stef's audio hack that improves the voices.
I remember this one guy working on replacing the backgrounds with actual arcade conversions, but it was probably too much work so he stopped.
would be sweet if someone could code an easier way to replace backgrounds, because the Genesis can do much better than these downgraded tiny snes graphics.

It didn't even bother using samples for percussion either. The music was entirely FM\PSG unlike the Champion Edition port.

I think that was because of the way they coded the audio driver for Super SF2, they coded it so sfx/voices can overlap but because of this no samples for the music.

It's funny how it's such a late release and it's one of the biggest Genesis cartridges of all and yet the soundtrack barely passes as a launch title

It is in fact the biggest licensed Genesis cartridge ever released

The color hack is nice.. It actually makes the water in Ken's stage blue.

The audio hack for the voices is pretty nice too.
A music hack seems inevitable.

That's actually very nice. Capcom has no love for the Mega Drive it seems.

The CPS Changer (CPS1) version of Street Fighter Alpha also has a really nice FM soundtrack.

They clearly had the talent to do better with the Genesis. Maybe they didn't care so much because it didn't do that well in Japan. It's also kinda funny how they went from such half-assed regard to being one of the most prominent developers for Saturn and Dreamcast.

Capcom was very close to Nintendo at the time and a SFII conversion was something big in the console war. There sould be something going on under the sheets in this regard.

You may be right.
On the other hand, it's Capcom
>"hey guys we want your game exclusive to our system"
lol ok
>everyone buys it
>comes out with minor revision and goes multiplat 2 months later
the capcom 5 isn't considered retro here, but it's capcom going peak capcom. that, or all the on-disc dlc stuff that they did during the 7th gen

I bet the Genesis could have done Street Fighter Alpha 1 and 2 with some toned down animations and a more limited color palette

Indeed. Even the Game Boy Color had one version and despite being the inferior hardware it had a better conversion of a Street Fighter game than its 16 bit counterparts.

If there were proper stage rips (arcade ones, not snes) I'd totally have attempted to convert them to Genesis format as good as possible.
but half the challenge here is finding good rips.
