I don't know how many people are actually interested in participating in this but I'm still going to try anyways. It's fun to think up stuff for this. brutal doom is fun for short bursts. the problem is that people either think it's total dogshit or the most amazing thing on the planet. The reality is that it's just a mediocre mod with a ton of unnecessary features that bog down the experience in my opinion. The Hell on Earth Starter Pack is actually a really great campaign in my opinion, with some fucking awesome levels. I would love to see how VietDoom turns out, just because I think marky mark needs to be a mapper instead of a modder. Brutal Doom was fun but it's far beyond stale. He ran out of original ideas for that mod a long time ago and he's basically only continuing to be that one trick pony because people want him to.

Also, he's a bit of a racist gorehound with nothing better to do than make edgy jokes and a mediocre mod.

I've been in /vr/doom threads since I was 16, in 2017. I turned 18 early this year. Honestly it was a great place to go as a disenfranchised teen. You guys were welcoming of opinions, and told me a lot about Doom and playing retro FPS games. I loved sharing about the different games and learning tricks on maps. Shit like that still makes me really happy. Comfy boomer vidya with a welcoming community.

My generation bullied the shit out of me. Constantly getting harassed and put down. Being a fat bastard doesn't help anything, and i painted a target on myself a lot, but still, it fucked with my head. To go from that environment to here was a great escape for me. I don't care if you think I'm just some young pussy or something, I valued my time here, and I still do.

To see a young guy, probably the age I showed up, act like this asshole I'm responding to, it makes me mad. I didn't act like this at that age, two fucking years ago. I was mentally ill, angry, and had almost no friends. I hated myself, and I still didn't act this cringeworthy.

I don't know why I felt like sharing, but I guess thanks for being bros, boomer dudes. You got me through high school by actually making me feel welcome somewhere. Doom is a big part of my life, I like sharing it with you guys here.

>7. Dead Simple clones
Let's not, that'll first of all be bothersome to get multiple people to do one level together for, and rather few Dead Simple clones are particularly great.

Maybe we just make sure to put a couple of fatsos and spiders as normal enemy encounters in a map, and you just need to kill them to open the exit.
Or killing the fatsos opens the exit, and killing the spiders opens a secret near the end, which, I don't know, gives you a rocketlauncher and a box or two of missiles, but I guess that more than anything rewards progressive play, and does little else for pistol starters, so maybe the secret can go somewhere else, idk.

I dunno why but it makes me think about how fascinatingly simplistic guns are on a conceptual level. They're basically metal sticks that can throw tiny objects so fast they pierce skin. Obviously they're more complex than that but at its most basic level that's essentially a gun.

Some guns can be ridiculously simple, to the point of genius.

If you look at old WW2 era and early Cold War SMGs, a lot of those are open-bolt blowback guns, meaning there's no locking system, there's no hammer, striker, or even a separate firing-pin, rather the firing-pin is a nub machined into the face of the bolt, which is basically just a solid weight, making sure the action stays closed long enough that it's safe to extract, but not so heavy that it prevents the action from opening at all.

You pull back the bolt until it catches on the sear, and it's now under spring tension, when you pull the trigger, the bolt is released, thrown forward, picks up a cartridge from the magazine, and puts it in the chamber.
Inertia makes sure the fixed firing-pin detonates the cartridge as soon as it's in the chamber, and pressure from the fired cartridge shoves back at the bolt, eventually overcoming its weight and throwing it back, the casing sticks on the face of the bolt as it travels back, hits a fixed piece of metal (the ejector), that makes it bounce out of the ejection port, and the bolt hits its rearmost point of travel.
By this point, if you had let go of the trigger after the last shot, the bolt catches on the sear and stays there until you pull the trigger again, or if you hold the trigger down, nothing stops the bolt from then being shoved forward by the recoil spring, and the bolt will continue slamming back and forth until you let go of the trigger, or your magazine is empty.

I want to see a sitcom of a bunch of 90 FPS characters sharing a house, as they order food, play video games, do sitcom stuff, and also fight evil on occasion.

Ideas for episodes.

>Duke, Caleb, and Lo-Wang have been challenged to do some errands. Hilarity ensues

>Doomguy has to somehow kick his Megasphere addiction

>The main characters go to a strip club and end up trashing the place.

>Ranger and Security Officer write a collection of short stories chronicling their adventures, and accidentally becomes too famous for their own good.

>Parias and Corvus get into a feud over who has better magic. The resulting show-off contest ends up getting out of hand

>Blazkowicz must contain himself upon hearing news of a Neo-Nazi rally.

A Doom movie may never work as a good movie but i always imagine it could be good enough by "Doom standards" if done by someone that are actually passionate about Doom and somewhat professionals.
I feel like animation instead of live action could do justice, 2D or 3D, due to the nature of the series or most of the designs/aesthetics to add into a movie or a miniseries.
A lot of Doom makes it sound too crazy of a heavy metal video game concept for story to even matter but these movies don't even feel like trying to take place inside a video game.
>FPS segments
>Face segments similar to how MCU has the inside of Tony's helmet with the "HUD" next to Doomguy's face
>Narrator could be the "they are rage" voice whose dialouge also resembles the intermission texts screens, so he occasionally talks to Doomguy
>Balance between humanizing Doomguy and keeping him simple (no dialouge for example)
>Some focus on other characters just in case, like UAC scientists such as that RoE lady and D2RPG dude talking about him
>Morgan, Crash or Phobos also making appearences, maybe Betruger, Olivia, Hayden or other "lore" bullshit too
>Maybe don't restrict it to one specific portrayal of Doom if needed, specially since each game must have something interesting
>Crazy action parts (and horror too) that fit Doom thematically but not Doom's gameplay, like Doomguy throwing a barrel at some imp since that will probably never be a mechanic as far as i know
>Humor/drama done right
(count)

>> No.5909604

>>5909598
>Easter eggs/references can be neat (don't fucking reuse the scientist named Carmack bit)
>Some occasional "isolation" since this is about a one guy vs many enemies kind of series
>Maybe even come up with new weapons and enemies
>Did i mention a variety of monsters and weapons being used too?
>Actually use the designs from the games because SWAT officers as UAC marines is literally Captain N levels of faithfullness (even with the Doom 3 ones in mind)
Like it may never happen/could still be executed badly but i feel like if someone just tried, it could at least give justice even if still a bad movie.
It's probably a mix of "Doom can't work into a movie" and not putting enough effort because of taking the series at face value that one wouldn't consider even the music or demons as iconic or interesting.

There’s still a chance that they could reuse some models for something like that. They’re already going to be reusing the Doomguy model for Doom Eternal. Maybe a future Quake game could do the same with Ranger, and the weapons.
I also really liked what they did with some of the weapons from Quake 2, 3, and 4. Especially the Quake 2 Super Shotgun.

"Doom movie" can work out just fine... In the hands of a director that fucking knows the target audience and what he is doing.
The problem so far is that they try to make it more "movie" than "Doom", i.e. add stupid ass plot that goes nowhere, trying to extablish and at least somewhat develop characters (and failing at it, but it still tries), and so many other unnecessary things that are expected from a "movie", but bog down the "Doom" part of it.
In the end we are left with a shitty hlafbaked movie with only bare relation to Doom and some references sprinkled on top.

They don't realise that Doom movie does not need a lot of plot or any characters besides Doomguy and maybe one or two side characters to provide some breathers/exposition between/during action. And the plot could be very basic, like "Hellgates open on streets of a city, Demons are killing everyone, military tries to interfere but fails, and among all the carnage walks Doomguy, killing all the demons that stand in his way, while he goes on to close the hellgate." A regular routine day for Doomguy, a disaster/action movie for the audience.

Another way it can be done is following the "Hardcore Henry" example, when the whole movie is shot in first person from perspective of one guy, with as little cuts as possible.

Yes, because 1980 Battlezone wasn't at all polygon-based. Uh-huh. There weren't Virtua Fighter and Daytona, there wasn't Fade to Black, a shitton of flat-shaded 3d games in general. Same year as Quake didn't have fully 3D Azrael's Tear developed completely independently from Quake. And Sweeney was developing Unreal's engine for 3 years already, two years to go. And Tomb Raider had its own engine, cross playform, no less. But yees, all hail holy Carmack.

>The whole concept of 3d models was pioneered by Carmarck
strictly false.

For all of the Carmacks genius, he didn't invent anything, only used what had been done bofore him in a more efficient manner.

Polygons were used in games long before him in arcades from as soon as late 80's (Winning Run)
Ultima Underworld ('92) used polygons for some decorations like tables, chairs, ankhs and so on, and in fact its press release demo was direct inspiration behind Wolf3D, Doom and eventually Quake.

Descent ('95) already used textured polygons for both the enemies and environment.

There's quite a few polygonal PSX games released in 94-95, that had full texturing, even if it was wobbly.

All that was before Carmack even began working on the Quake engine.

50 million dollars is cool, but he'd surely have at least double that if he'd patented some of his techniques.

No, you're getting this all wrong, what was revolutionary was applying the concept of Binary Space Partitioning (a concept predating his own birth by a year), in a mass market consumer product, as the means of having a fast and detailed (pretty much) three dimensional world for a game in 1993, the only way to actually do such a thing at that time.
Applying it again in 1996, Quake, this time in actual full software 3D (which wasn't an easy task in itself), using the necessary optimization of BSP trees, allowing it to run on consumer grade hardware, once again the only realistic way to make such a game at that exact time.

John Carmack doesn't really have anything to do with "the concept of 3D models", you're a fucking retard.

how would an arena shooter featuring all the iconic 90s FPS characters work? like if there is a shotgun pickup does the player get the shotgun of the character they are playing (so duke would get the pump shotgun but if you were caleb you would get the double barrel shotgun) or would it work based on the current map so if you are in black messa everyone just picks up the spas12? same with the powerups, would they be placed around the map or QC style abilities? i guess you could just make it so the server choses how the game is played.

>Episode
The Elder World. Episode 1 is decent, but the weaker roster of course hurts it, as well as the easier gameplay due to being the shareware episode. Episode 3 has nice lighting, but I find the levels far too short and simple, I found myself reaching the end and thinking "that was it?". Episode 2 was novel for its vertical nature, but that also inhibited it, you feel like you make less progress and the levels feel more like a slog.

The Elder World has a few big strengths. One, it is the one with barely any ogres, you spend the game fighting this overly common enemy and finally get a break from them. I also love the open design, stuff like E4M4 features some of the most nonlinear gameplay in vanilla Quake. The increased level of challenge is welcoming, plus I also am crazy enough to love the spawn in all its painful glory. The abstract design also worked great for Quake, it was taking the Lovecraftian mindset to its logical conclusion.

>Favorite Level
Palace of Hate. Mobs of Shamblers, open design.

>Favorite enemy
The spawn. There should have been more in Quake. Any mods to increase spawn output so that there are 20x the amount of spawns where one is located?

>Favorite Weapon
Grenade Launcher. Just is a lot more satisfying than point and shoot. Even more fun when combined with spawns in E4M6.

It's even weirder because they made the new chaingun extremely reliable and they even did away with the annoying prefire windup from 2016, so it just flatout outclasses the AR now. Accuracy isn't even a detriment because most of the combat won't take place at distances 10 feet and beyond. Which is good because fuck cowadoody ARs.

I actually hate how Doom 3 had to screw over the concept of the chaingun. It already was a low-end machinegun equivalent in the classic games, except it was cooler by virtue of it being a handheld minigun.
What do we need a fucking rifle in a futuristic setting for?

He also spreads misinformation regarding Doom lore and other franchises, this is wikipedia levels of research. He drags so much and most of the time his videos are filled with nothing particularly interesting regarding the subject matter. It's stale as hell.

The modding parts are not even worth it:meme shit, mods that everyone who spent at least a year know about them with the addition of clickbait titles.
Sometimes he can't even play them right.

Out of all OG Quake content, "Tim Willits" levels (henceforth, TW-levels) interest me now by far the most.

The general idea "every mappers makes his own version of Quake, uses same tools to his ends, thus self-expressing" - okay, got it.

Petersen like walled himself into his corner and was doing his own thing, which is 7 of his released levels plus beta ending - okay, also understandable.

What interests me most in TW-levels is that they represent like the polar opposite to the Petersen's levels from the viewpoint of the general idea of "each mapper makes his own Quake essentially". Petersen, out of four is the one who adhered to this the most precisely. It's literally 7 consecutive levels, some of which are absolutely not intended for shotgunstart + beta end, that was meant to follow immediately after.

TW-levels represent polar opposite in that they sort of dabble in every pie, so to speak. There is techbase level (E4M1), there are two levels of their own with unique gimmick, flying stones (E1M2, E1M3), there is a collaboration with McGee (E3M6), a Romero-like level, I guess (E2M7), dunno how to classify E1M4 yet, E1M5 could be maybe viewed as Petersen-esque a bit? maybe not - and, finally, there are Wind Tunnels, which are like, what the fuck that even is.

Out of those levels, the last one to fall into place was either Underearth or Wind Tunnels. Underearth contains credits secret (TW&TC, raven.wad) and is the only level that's missing from the early level listing Romero once shared, if not mistaken? While Wind Tunnels, in beta3, doesn't have any enemies making it obvious they were last month's addition. By the way, there being no enemies or pickups makes it apparent the Wind Tubes hurt you on landings in the way very similar to how Petersen did it in E4M2 and some other levels, so it might be a sort of dab on Petersen after all.

Anyway, what I mean to say, is that TW-levels comprise a sort of vertical slice of the game, they somewhat dab in(cont)

(cont-d) - or seemingly somewhat dab in every major thing in their own ways. Like, obviously, E4M1 differs from other techbase levels, same could be said about other sort of dabs as well. What I am leading to, is that TW-levels could sort of form some sort of commentary on Quake taken as a whole (E1M4 could be even imagined as a commentary upon E1M2 or E1M3, although this is simply a wild guess).

Anyhow, I haven't replayed them lately, well, did E1M2 and took some other levels for quick spins. What do I have to say. First, E1M2 at least is meant strictly for shotgunstart. You get nailgun ammo there, but there isn't a nailgun, and that nailgun ammo is instead hinting upon where optional stuff is. E1M3-E1M5 are also perfectly shotgunstartable. Second, E1M2 changes geometry a bit in between difficulty levels: there is a different number of nail-shooting things in that trap corridor. Moreover, third, E1M3 on normal has shambler at the end of the level as the big reveal. However, on hard it like throws two shamblers onto you immediately (provided you take upper route - which is the incorrect one although you have no way of knowing that beforehand on a blind play), which completely spoils the buildup and the reveal. Which hints upon you being meant to already know shamblers are a thing in this game - which you can't on your first play, provided you didn't dabble in other episodes first. Meaning, the level was likely MEANT to be replayed, first easy, then normal, then hard - with differences, progressively introduced, being meant to MAKE some sort of SENSE in the process. So, what if that concerns every other TW-level? Being shotgunstartable, meant to be first played on easy, then normal, then hard, keeping on a lookout for added stuff? Purely as a working hypothesis, that is? I am really interested in sort of knowing what this is all about, especially since E1M2 and, much moreover E1M3 play such an important role in establishing the overall look and feel(cont)

(cont-d) for Quake, E1M3 being not only the level where Shits Suddenly Gets Real, but one the most iconic levels in the game.

So anyway, I was just summing up my thoughts on the matter of trying to determine the best angle of attack on this. I guess, there is no moral or message there, as of yet, but I am really genuinely excited, as of now, I have at least some form of a working hypothesis (stated above) as to how to approach all this stuff.

I never liked the idea the way it's implemented. Makes the guns feel weak when your hands do a better job killing demons than your gun IN A SHOOTER, and the demons also feel weak, it should have been made like ninja gaiden with the demons growing angrier and desperate and more dangerous when they're about to die, not the opposite and get stunned. But I still enjoy the game, with runes.

Objectively good game, easy to mod and has a modding community who have already made crazy amounts of content.
And then people just fall in love with the damn game and it remains in people's hearts for all this time, with persistent word of mouth.

You can see something similar with Heroes Of Might & Magic 3, objectively good game, which had a particular boon at the time of its release; local multiplayer. Back in those days, people around those regions may have a decent PC, but didn't necessarily have a great internet connection, which meant this was an option for many people for some multiplayer fun.
There was also the internet cafe thing, where you and a couple of buds could split the cost to very cheaply use their computers for a day or so, and then you could all play Heroes 3, even if only one of you, hell, none of you, had their own computer to play on.
And then again, because it's a good game at the core, it sticks with people and remains in their hearts, and keeps getting recommended to others as a solid choice.

There's cultural and economic backgrounds to things like these, but it ultimately always comes down to people wanting to play a good game.

Once the M3 entered service in like 1944, at least, because they were stuck with the Thompson until then, which they had been looking at replacing since they first adopted it, because Jesus Christ it was so expensive, and took too long to make, they managed to seriously reduce cost (I think by as much as half) and production time with the M1A1 model, but that still wasn't enough.
They never really had as many as they needed, and it didn't help that others wanted a piece of the Thompson either, Britain had kind of neglected subguns overall and after Dunkirk, they were desperately scrambling for a solution, buying Thompsons with gold bullion until the US said "God, stop, we need those, we saw them first!"

The British solution was the Sten, which though not useless, leaves a lot to be desired. Better than nothing.
The American solution was the 'Greasegun', which has a lot of things common with the Sten, but is made better in every way, never really suffering the same magazine problems. It's kind of genius in how incredibly low cost and fast to make the M3 is, particularly with the M3A1 version, and the quality is still consistently good. The low rate of fire actually made it really easy to train new soldiers with as well.

I think the core is PC Powerslave though (not explicitly referenced), and aesthetics is primarily from Talos Principle (zoroastric/syrian overtones being superficial flavor). All the Heretic, Quake (including ep4), Q3, Painkiller callouts seem to be secondary. Very weird combination though. Not to mention, that this is the first game I encounter that I think was influenced by PC Powerslave in any significant capacity.

It was definitely a single mod called something like Enhanced Heretic or Visual Heretic, someting like that.
Definitely not "brutal Heretic" or any of its derivatives, those are trash.

BTW there are a few Doom weapon mods that work fine with Heretic too. Unreal Tournament weapons is the one. Also Guncaster and Trailblaser, but those aren't up to everyones taste.

There's also Nevermore addon for Heretic+Trailblaser that is highly customisable and adds a lot of monster variants which you can tune appearance rates (or disable completely. Too bad its author abandoned it, leaving it Trailblaser dependant.

There also was some anon willing to make it independent from Trailblaser, but he disappeared as well.

Dusk is another memegame. The main sources of influence, however, seem to be quite far from the stuff it copiously reference. You Are Empty and, possibly, Nitro Family? (only know that game through reviews, screenshots and maybe couple minutes of gameplay videos total).

Devil's Daggers is oldPrey (game arena in particular is essentially a MUCH more mechanically complex version of Prey's resurrection arena) mixed with Alien Shooter 1.

Indieshits seem to like oldPrey. I know of three high-profile indieshits influenced by it already, plus possibly two more which are not yet released.

I know one Duke's usermap which I think was made by a person who knew his Crimsonland. It does NOT feature hordes of enemies. The aspect lifted from its survival mode instead is making the game progress like a sort of meme metroidvania, as a series of insights changing your approach to it bit by bit.

You Are Empty is an attempt to make a FPS in a Soviet-setting, and it's a crap in every regard, the only thing that can connect it with Dusk is some industrial architecture in the midgame, but that shit is exactly the same on any eastern block european country, which was most likely inspiration.

YAE is actually the only instance of soviet-era parody (klukwa - "cranberry") made by people who actually knew what they were talking about, and not made of pure vodka-balalaika cringe.
Thing about it, it's pretty much proto walking simulator with something vaguely resembling Half-Life 1's gameplay shoehorned on top. Everything artistry-related is actually quite awesome (especially if you can read all those propaganda posters scanned from actual historical posters and understand the whole game is pushing sensibilities from those posters to absurdity, that aspect got lost in English version since posters didn't get translated). Anyway, Dusk's design and modeling is essentially retarded version of YAE, and its gameplay is just as much shittily shoehorned even if lifted from some SS-like (be it Nitro Family or not) - and not HL. In fact, YAE could also be seen as HL parody as well.

WGCity is "jumping puzzle: the level". The "meme metroidvania" is connected to the types of jumps you know are possible to do, with map actually progressively teaching you to do those.
If the question is related to Crimsonland, to beat your personal survival record in any significant way you had to change your strategy, and those changes came from insights about its mechanics where you suddenly started understanding game mechanics better than you did before No mechanics reevaluation = no highscore. The game's explicit perk system was, among other, a parallel to that. Hardly any arena indieshit catches on that.

It hits you with a strikingly, screaminy antiintuitive mechanics and visuals, then lets them become second nature to you in like two hours. So you are like "I dunno what that green flash from that exploded 3legged crab I just tore one leg off of, supposed to represent, but it's effectively explosion special effect reskinned green from orange. And is't that acid gun effectively just soakem?". It's intentionally frontloaded and geared to become old as quickly as possible (if you give a shit). Devil's Daggers is absolutely that.

Speaking of Dusk, I like how the final boss, Nyarlathotep, was hinted at in a few of the the earlier levels.
E2M8: Blood & Bone has a blood scribble: "The Darkness is Spreading" before the locked Blue-keyed door, the adjacent room could be described as a "choking room" due to the pitch darkness, stairs, and floating red dust.
E3M2: Fire and Ice contains two direct quotes from the poem. "The Waves of Destruction", and "The Dimming, Cooling Sun".
E3M4: Crypt of the Flesh indirectly mentions Nyarlathotep in graffiti. "The Chaos Crawls To Me"
E3M5: Blasphemy reveals Nyarlathotep as the tornado that destroys the temple, leading to what is beneath the altar.
E3M9: The Dweller in Darkness - one of August Derleth's stories about Nyarlathotep was entitled "The Dweller in Darkness".

>AND in the way it ends up being frontloaded when you discover half the time you aren't even shooting UNHOLY SPIRITUAL ABOMINATIONS WHAT THE FUCK THAT EVEN IS and shooting red gems instead.
okay so the red gems aren't actually a part of the weird tentacle pillar things, or the giant spider-skulls that eat gems and spit out spider abominations, or the giant boney centipedes/gigapedes whose screams are from hell itself, or the massive fucking leviathan that can swallow you whole, and they definitely aren't how you kill all of those things

have you actually played devil daggers, or have you just watched videos of it and decided to wank off some incoherent theories about it?

>>5913046
devil daggers isn't frontloaded. despite how quickly it *can* get through its content, most people still get their asses handed to them long before they see a significant amount of it. barely 1/4 of the playerbase made it to the first centipede, only 3% of the playerbase has made it to the gigapedes, and only 0.7% has made it to the leviathan. I myself have never actually seen the ghostpedes and thorns in play, and I'm in the top 0.1%! that's not frontloaded by any means.

and the gameplay style devil daggers goes after - you're locked in a small arena, here are more and more enemies, and things will only get crazier the further along you go - has existed since robotron 2084. no matter what you think, old-prey has no claim to that idea.

and again, the word is counterintuitive.

Holding information back isn't lying. That what you said is probably true doesn't contradict Prey being the primary source of influence behind the game concept at all.

Are you seriously hinting Prey's SOUND DESIGN of all things doesn't blow the fuck off your Devil Shitters like they weren't even there?

I have watched several videos of V1 and V3 by genuinely good players in order to get a reading on look and feel, as well as the intended way of playing actually good players exhibit. I found that to be perfectly enough for that particular game.
>and decided to wank off some incoherent theories about it?
Prey's resurrection arena (taken with Prey's general aesthetics) meets Alien Shooter is a perfectly coherent theory. Someone decided to ""enhance"" said Prey's arena by means of drowning you with hordes of enemies difficult to keep track of all at once (which has NOTHING TO DO with what was ACTUALLY interesting and noteworthy about Prey), and slapping some PS1-like jitter on top, like it's OG Baroque or something. I honestly can't remember a single 90s FPS that looked like Devil Daggers, by the way, despite being pretty well educated, I think, in that regard. What you are describing is quantity over quality. That the game drowns you in hordes doesn't at all mean the types themselves are any interesting. In fact, this is why I have watched genuinely good players playing that game - to get a read of how those enemies are disposed of effectively - and they are disposed effectively in ways that COMPLETELY UNDERMINE their wannabe-intimidating and exotic looks in very characteristical for Prey's ways. That undermining, that is. The plays end up being far less "eloquent" than the looks, in fact the game is blatantly overdesigned. Prey made that a point, that is, apparent and self-evident, while DD drowns you in enemies making sure you never actually get to that point.
That you have invested your time in a pretentious self-contradicting timesink is frankly your own business, I am glad I didn't.
