I'd argue that this game is LITERALLY ruined by this issue. The art direction is such horseshit that the game is almost unplayable. It's rare that this happens, but the art is just that bad.

First of all, fuck you for making that the picture of the thread OP, that specific scene scared the shit out of me when I first saw it, and also I legitimately am afraid of those creatures. The boss fight with the white one was torture for me. Yeah I'm a bit wuss when it comes to horror but I thought those monsters were pretty legit. That said, you're right about some of the later designs, Glutton was a pretty fucking stupid design.

>> No.5889943

PE2 is not survival horror. Except from a couple of scenes, it's not supposed to be scary either.

I think the monsters are cool. They stay away from the cliché stuff of the time like "attack of the giant insect!" which both Resident Evil and Silent Hill are guilty off.
They fit with the design ideas of the game, the goofiness is intended (why else do you think the main villain would keep laughing all the time), and coupled with the fact that some of the monsters used to be human, is what makes it unsetling.

I can not play PE1 anymore myself, it feels dated in a bad way. PE2 however is awesome and has infinite replay value.

PE1 has way more soul than 2. This isn't up for debate. It is just shallow and showy at many points. PE2 is a dumpster fire in terms of its vision for what the hell it is. A cowboy theme, really?

In PE1 like 90% of the monsters are just edgy version of animals. PE2's monsters have a decidedly John Carpenter's The Thing feel to them.

So by this logic Resident Evil is like Goof Troop?

They hired people who knew how to make a game with 2D pre-rendered backgrounds and 3D models. That doesn't mean every game using this technique are survival horror, or else Final Fantasy VII would be.

The only "survival horror" elements which PE2 has are adventure game elements which you can also find in other jRPGs, such as a "limited" inventory, which just like in Final Fantasy IV, is "limited" but has a shit ton of slots.

I hate that book. The whole thing hinges on the belief that the entire human race will completely lose morals, ethics and then the entirety of any semblance of enlightened civilization, in that order over the course of aeons. The only thing halfway plausible is the that the humans that managed to leave earth millions of years beforehand would come back as fucky midget bug abominations, since that much time away from the home world would have changed their physiology in wacky ways, and life out in the dark of space would have probabl force them to develop a long standing insectoid/communal civilization. But yeah, the whole thing is cringingly bleak for bleak's sake and written be the same kind of hipster nihilists that write form tv shows like West World.

> it literally had ex-resident evil designers who made the game.

People always say this about PE2; but in the game, Squaresoft's talent shines more than that of the RE guys.

The technique that mixes pre-rendered backgrounds with FMV videos is used a lot through the game, and that's a Square thing, that you could find in FF8 for instance.

On top of this there are tons of things to make the backgrounds dynamic: dynamic lights, effects like water, smoke, etc, can be found everywhere; and the backgrounds themselves are dynamic, a lot of them have variations (lights turned off or on, be it articifial light or night/day cycle), things that break or move in the backgrounds and which influence navigation, etc

That's without mentionning all the things Aya has to say when interacting with stuff in the environment.

Meanwhile, RE2 had none of this and was very static.
RE3 (which did not share devs with this game), had some dynamism, but not as much as PE2.

PE2 must be one of the best game with 3D models and 2D pre-rendered backgrounds, technically speaking. It's all Squaresoft influence. Even PS2 games like Onimusha, while having higher res backgrounds and more detailed models, do not have this kind of dynamism.

Just beat the game on Bounty; I think I'm going to skip Scavenger this time around and go straight for Nightmare.
Frankly, I find Scavenger to be boring (few weapons) and less challenging than Bounty, too. It's supposed to be more challenging because you can't buy as much stuff, but I never buy anything anyway to try and get the best score possible at the end.

anyway
>Ringer Solution gives a really shitty BP bonus
>mpboost 2 gives 3 times as much

How does this make any sense? Anyway this is why I only ever heal using Ringer Solution, and Protein Capsules, unless I'm playing in Normal in which case I don't even use those

Also, Giant Baby confirmed to be one really annoying boss; on Bounty/Nightmare, even when I know the best tactic to get him, I still tend to die a couple times. I should probably not use heavy weapons like the M249, the dmg output encourages it, but it makes Aya way too slow.

I believe that weapon's weight also affects running speed (on top of turn speed during aiming and aiming stance speed), though the internet won't confirm, it becomes quite apparent when you're trying to run around Giant Fuckcae Baby

Don't tell me "this... nadiga..." is supposed to be a "This is Madigan". I played this game dozens of times in all modes and I've always thought this was some kind of mistranslation (aka the original text has an incomplete japanese word that was written as-is on the english version).

Finished a Scavenger Run
>bad ending
>bought Medicine Wheel at the start
>Used Gunblade throughout most of the game

Playing with the Gunblade was fun. One shooting Golems with it is satisfying, especially the "stealth" ones. Raping the Blizzard Chaser in a couple of hits was also cool. Sadly it's not worth much against other bosses; the "giant Bowman", or whatever its name is, was painful up close.

My inventory was 100% full at the end of game. All 5 boxes were full, my inventory was full; and I had to discard a bunch of penicillin/stim.
Technically I could have done better since I used all Protein Capsules and I didn't really need to; and I also discarded some small stuff (Stim etc) in favour of keeping ammo I never used; as a safety net. Also again I didn't bother with the shooting range, fuck that thing when you only have the M93R.

In terms of BP, buying the Medecine Wheel at the start of the game doesn't make you lose THAT much BP in the end considering you still get back half of its price + other prices you got along the way like the Gunblade. I'd say about 6-7k BP was lost that way.

One noteworthy thing is that I didn't use all my exp, far from it; I had more than 20k left when entering the final boss room; meaning i've got one hell of an exp bonus for the next ng+ now

I might attempt a speedrun in Normal next; in regular conditions

The max you can get from the shooting gallery is 1500 BP for acing every single levels, so nope, but after the tower you can get the good stuff, granted the actually useful gear you can't get until after the tower or you already win it in the shooting gallery.

>>5919101
Nope, you only get one try, and potentially one reward per shooting range level.

I say potentially because if you play one of the levels, don't get the best score and save, congratulations you just locked yourself out of the best reward.

That's why I say "fuck this thing" on the higher difficulties; imagine only getting to use the M93R for it, having less MP/HP; and having to reset after each try. It's way too unforgiving for an early game training session.

I'm trying a new challenge in Nightmare difficulty:
>100% kills
>no shop
>no consumable, which means no healing items, no belt pouches, no protein capsules

I've reached the final boss. It's actually been somewhat easy so far, although Glutton (real kill, not using the machinery) + mad rush took me a couple of tries; but I'm suffering against the final boss. I usually use one Ringer Solution against giant baby fuckface, and I haven't even thought about Eve yet.

My tactic is to save M249 and most of the Magnum for Eve; so I'm fighting the baby using M950 at the start of the fight, for when he's still fast; and shotgun for late fight when he's slower. Dying in a couple of hits is not fun; and since I'm going for 100%, I have to kill every part of its body... Maybe I shouldn't waste my MP using Energy Shot so much at the start of the fight, but I'm afraid I'd never have enough ammo otherwise. this is actually pretty tricky

Wouldn't you want to use the P08 for that rather than the M950? The higher crit output would give you more damage, you're a little more mobile, and it would help save on ammo.

iirc there's a way to juggle his aggro between different parts as long as you reduce his turnrate first thing.
You might also want to go for pyrokinesis x10 spread in the fight (Although I'd just save it for the back tentacles because I always go for every single part) over Inferno x2 at the start.

Honestly though for that precise playthrough I'd save all the Rslug in the whole game just for this fight, because fuck that fight with just Buckshot / 9mm / M249,
Eve you can really deal with just the magnum and bullets you get with it and a few PE as long as you only go for shots / PE when she drops her antibody (for the screen warping attack just wait for 20mp refilled and lifesteal that interupts and refill your MP a bit without being too risky), so don't feel too bad for using the M249 vs the bigboi

>> No.5922295

and it is done. I still don't know how you're supposed to avoid getting hit by the boss until at least one arm (gas form) is taken care of; but that's all that hit me through the fight so it ended up well.

P08 + a couple of Inferno lvl3 is indeed the way to go. P08 is the most underrated weapon in the game, I already knew that, it just confirms it more.

After that, I don't know if I rocked, got lucky, or both; but Eve was a piece of cake. Maeda SP Magnum rounds + less a couple hundreds M249 shots did the trick.

tl;dr
>Nightmare difficulty
>100% kills including bosses full kills, got (almost) all items
>no shop used, no consumable item used

Only thing I used was the Snail magazine for the P08 because afaik using it doesn't impact BP score and the goal was see how much BP I can get here

Things I missed:
>only got 300 bp at the shooting range; vs the maximum possible of 1500 + reward items which are worth 5380
On Nightmare I genuinely believe the shooting range is the hardest part for a 100% playthrough.

I did discard a couple of items in Akropolis, which I could have kept if I didn't use the SWAT Gear. I still feel a little bad about that.
However I only had 2-3 inventory slots left in the end so in the case of a perfect playthrough that would include shooting range rewards, one would need to discard 2-3 items anyway.

So, if my math is correct, the maximum BP one can get in a single playthrough is 414647; to which you add a 0 for Nightmare bonus; but that's without killing a single Eve ghost; under these conditions one could probably kill 2-3 ghosts; although I don't remember if they do give extra BP or just EXP

Now the only challenge I have left would be getting an L rank in a Normal play which might prove easier than what I just did
