I've played the N64 mod for Duke Nukem 3D. And I was pleasantly surprised on how good the new weapon sprites look. Some of them I prefer them over the originals.

Some of the changes are interesting too.
The Lo Wang graffiti is cool in E1M1 and then you had those censored parts which kinda suck.
Plus no music, which is a sin.
I also prefer the final battle against the Cycloid Emperor. It actually looks like a Stadium and he is in 3D because.... I don't know.

Sup, guys? I've got a nice idea for those, who prefer playing vanilla at 320x200/35fps on CRT monitor. I guess most of you use the mode 640x400_70Hz, because relatively modern monitors and GPUs do not support lower. Looks good, but not perfect yet, as the scanlines are duplicated. There's an even better way. In DOSBox config set the scaler scan2x instead of normal2x. Now you've got only a single visible scanline per source image row at odd positions and a black one at even positions. Now turn one of the focus adjusters on the line output transformer until you get a nice thick fucking ray so that non-black scanlines occupy most of the area on the screen and play some fucking DooM the way it is meant to played!

There is only one game I remember vividly dreaming multiple times and it's Homeworld, I guess Homeworld struck me in a right time in my brain, and despite being one of my favorites games its not like I am mad about it. Strange but its never about homeworld ships or story itself, its always about the feeling of being alone in space surrounded by vast emptiness and stars, the ships are always strange polygon creations of my brain to the point I drawed them roughly just to invoke the dream. And I had a very peculiar feeling of my brain realizing something important but forgetting. How daunting they felt.

As with dreams its always a fools errand to try to explain to others how it felt.

Because for Doom, Tom had been told to go study military bases and shit to use as inspiration for maps, only it turned out real life military bases are very boring, boxy, and unexciting, not much better than Wolfenstein 3D.
All of Tom's maps were either scrapped or shelved, and he was later fired.
Sandy would use a few of his old maps and retool them.

For Rise Of The Triad (which rules, go fuck yourself, I hope your mom dies in her sleep tonight), he evidently decided realism had been the wrong way to go for these kinds of game, and instead made the game as exaggerated and arcade-like as he could, the latter in contrast to how Wolfenstein 3D had only some remnant arcade elements, and Doom ditching them almost completely during development.

Even weirder is if they only bring back some aspects of old Hell because it "fits" the new, kind of streamlined version but then they use this stone portrait of a design that isn't really used
Would be funnier if they used the Archvile one, as a contrast to the Eternal design lacking the tubes
Unless they go the "Tyrant" route of naming the OG Baron something else

That's incredible how awesome Duke Nukem Alien Armageddon is.
Sure it kinda breaks the balance of the original maps.
But there's such a high level of polish and love put into it.
The new maps are great, maybe too big and drag too much at times.

But overall I love this mod.

This was suggested a while ago but the idea of a doom mapping project where everyone has a 1000x1000 cube to work in to form a "collage" of sorts would be great. I think themes would have to be set for each level or else everything would just be a crazy mishmash of rooms (though one pure chaos level with no theme would be fun). Perhaps they could be based off each doom 2 level they replace. First level is entryway/techbase themed, 7th level has to be dead simple related, etc. To keep the project moving everyone would start on a different level and rotate through them once their section for that level was completed.

Similar to that, but everyone has a square to map in for each level. 500x500 might be a bit easier to manage though if it's going to be for all levels. Also you don't have to keep your square on the grid just as long as your portion is no bigger than the required size and is connected to an existing section.

I can beat Doom and even Ultimate Doom. Doom II. Both Final Dooms. Went through Romero's two "replacement" Doom levels with not much difficulty even though they were challenging in places.
But Sigil is bullshit. Unfair bullshit design created to be artificially hard and full of goddamn shit. And Romero knows it. He knows he created a masochistic pile of shit beyond any fair and sane design where at all times you can be aware and maneuver around danger with skill and map awareness. Sigil is designed to destroy all of that and make the game just infuriatingly stupidly unfair, much like other level "designers" who create a lot of these fucking stupid megaWADs you see every goddamn where.
I've played fucking Doom since the goddamn Doom shareware back in the early 90s and fuck this. It's garbage, Romero, and you fucking know it, you goddamn hack.

Your original post is constantly pointing out "artificial difficulty" and "unfairness", common phrases and buzzwords to complain about the difficulty of a video game without providing valid reasoning to why the game is difficult. What do you even mean by the term "artificial difficulty"? I understand that there are games that feature trial-and-error situations where you are punished unfairly by an event you could not react to in time, but Sigil does not feature any actual unfair moments whatsoever. You are clearly bad at the game, and you need to git gud.

Like, 1024x1024 projects exist, and that's maps where the playable space must be constrained to those kinds of dimensions, those maps are small, that's less than half the size of Dead Simple, a 512x512 space would be pretty difficult for most people to do something interesting with.

1024x1024 will be fine, especially if we get 32 people or more. That's 32 sections per level which will make each one decently sized. Now the next goal would be choosing the theme for each level. Like said earlier you don't want each level to be made up of completely random sections. Would a sewer theme be good for map02?

I think that could work.
I think we wouldn't strictly need to get 32 people either (we're lucky if we get half of that), or that each space would strictly have to be or fit in a 1024x1024 square, perhaps it could be a long 512x1536 hallway.
I think also in the interest of not making things too linear, we might allow multiple exits on some rooms, for detours and what not.

Are we doing Boom format, and are we allowed to add some minor out of bounds stuff for detail and for teleporting in monsters? A typical rule for a normal 1024x1024 project is that the map can be just about anything, as long as the only space the player can move on adds up to 1024x1024 map units.
Now, given that this will be a massive quilting process, we can't have people go TOO nuts with auxiliary additions like that (because we might get in the way of each other otherwise), but I think it would be ok for people to do some.

>> No.5903329

>>5903307
Boom formatting would be fine
Unlimited space for out of bounds stuff like monster teleporters, but obviously don't go crazy with this
I like the idea of each player section being having the same area of a 1024x1024 square so that would be fine
Keep it simple and only allow up to 4 "entrances/exits" to a sector. A Sector can be a dead end but only if there are other sectors with open exits. More sectors can always be added on in case we forget some openings.

The only reason it got a pass was the $10 price tag, it being the only commercial release of the 3 third party expansions since the intial retail, and using the original grp files so you could still use eDuke32.

Descent to Undermountain. Yes, that dungeon crawling immersive sim-like RPG on an engine from a shooter game about flying robots.

It's like the greatest pile of "What ISN'T broken here gawd DAMN" ever created throughout the entire history of videogames.

Weirdest thing, there are glimpses of genuine goodness there too, it's not JUST a shitpile.

>A game so horrendously broken it just loops back to being playable again just to see what happens next.
In fact I suspect, that from a certain point in the development (where it became perfectly clear that with this engine the end result could only be a shitpile), what I wrote about actually became the core, intentional, concept behind the game. To hook the player through "Jeez, what else HAVEN'T I seen here just YET?", making the game just barely completeable - but otherwise, w-h-elllllllllllllll
In other words, I don't think this game's title is still, 22 years later, somewhat recognized purely through chance. I think, from a certain point on, it was DESIGNED to be extremely memorable in an highly infamous way.

Just making lemonade from those lemons.

I wondered if I was the only person who even enjoyed shovelware CDs. Feels like a lot of them have gone lost to history, trying to find almost anything on some of them is nigh impossible.

One big problem with pretty much everything not retro is the whole lack of shovelware CDs. A new Doom map comes out today, it likely won't be on a CD and thus will likely be lost to history. Sure, the more popular stuff will rise, but what about those of us who want to keep everything?

I look at modern games with a lot of mods. That brings me to checking out Skyrim and Minecraft. Note that both aren't even a decade old, but have enough to have a history. You go to Nexus to download a mod, only to realize it is incompatible with the most recent version. In an older game, that is no problem, just use the unpatched CD. But in a world with patches coming through Steam, now it is all force updated, which means now stuff breaks without a care. We have things to prolong patches, but nothing to revert to older versions. Can we even play the first, unpatched, version of Skyrim? At best there might be a torrent for it, but I wouldn't be surprised if they were dead due to most people just supporting the latest version of a game.

Minecraft is wonderful for having the ability to play past versions. Even for the ones not in the launcher, you can easily get the old .JARs and experience them. You can get plenty of mods, sure, and there is even a Minecraft archive project going on.

See, shovelware was a time capsule, it kept all it could. This archive project mostly is made up of links where it isn't archiving anything; I found more on my own through old Mediafire links. That isn't promising. Nor is the fact that most archived links are for more modern versions; 2010 stuff may have started then, but we are getting more modern versions from 2014 which require a shitload of other garbage you didn't want to mess with and broke the balance of the older versions.

Nothing wrong with it at all, the problem is few do it. It was bad enough back then because people would rant about these things being available online.

There is a bit of a difference between me collecting some levels and storing it on a disc and a company doing it. The latter will get notability and be archived, mine relies entirely on me shilling it 20 years later. It is better than nothing, yes, but it isn't the same. Plus, in Skyrim's case, it is worthless due to the base game no longer supporting various mods. If I actually enjoyed Minecraft, I probably would archive a lot more, sadly I am possibly the one person out there that finds Minecraft frustrating due to disliking building things and hating puzzles in games.

>more joys lost to history
It is depressing when you think about all that is lost these days. One reason I get miserable, the future isn't getting better, it just is getting worse with upkeeping mods and maps, resulting in even more being lost to history. TNCROSS2.WAD is like TNCROSS.WAD, but with a total expansion around it, so no longer are you limited to just a square room. ULTIM.WAD features nice expansive open combat with a Cyberdemon to boot. STONES.WAD isn't bad, but the button tends to get stuck a lot so I would definitely not trust doing it on a version with broken saves.

True however, the axe is useless in vanilla Quake, Doom's punching really gets a shitload of mileage out of the Berserk Pack, something which Quake doesn't have.
There's Quad Damage, but it's simply wasted on the axe.

and the plasma rifle doesn't exist because i read on the internet that the bfg is more efficient
i don't know how to manage space even in a port that fixes actor height collision so the rocket launcher is suicide
the chaingun? like that's even a usable weapon, don't you know how inefficient bullets are compared to shells?

No. It's the bad grindy slaughter maps, unending stream of consciousness Eternal Doom style maps, that go on and on without any purpose, and unoriginal boring maps, that I don't like. Sigil was fun, and not any of those. Sigil felt like fifth episode like it was supposed, and it's the part of it's charm. It had memorable sections (like all those involving the cyberdemons) and outside few bullshit moments (like barons in the stairs) I found it fun. There are lot of good wads with bullshit moments though. It wasn't too dark outside one room, that was kind of point of it. Turn your gamma up, if darkness is a problem. It isn't supposed to be that dark, that you have constantly problems with the darkness. And like the previous guy said: Preverse the ammo, don't use your rockets on imps and shotgunners.

>>5905358
Wouldn't it be the opposite literally? Motion sickness happens more easily on low fovs with box monitors, since this open the fov up you don't have to turn your game view as often.

System Shock 2 but heavy weapons(except for the metastasis field generator) and both the laser sword and annelid Crystal shard can either gib or dismember half-annelied and pure annelid enemies if you hit them with enough damage past 0 HP. Seriously, Its a shame that SS2 doesn't allow either gibs or dismemberment!

You notice how not only Duke Nukem 1,2, DOOM and DOOM 2 but also Heretic, Hexen and Strife and Duke 3D as well as others have their music sound quite different if you pick a different Midi sequencer and/or sound card (such as adlib, Soundblaster, Soundblaster Pro, Disney Sound Source and Gravis)? Really, for example, the respective intro songs and some of the level songs for DOOM 2 and Duke 3D sound not only less dated and beepy, but in some cases feel like entirely different songs when changed from Adlib, to say, either timidity++ or Soundblaster pro!

It is true for any midi lol.
That's just how they work.
You can change the sounding to whatever with different soundfont samples, and most manufacturers used different ones.

that's because midi files are just instructions for instruments to play notes at certain times

"Mission"?
What "Mission"?
Doom does not have "Missions"
But it has maps.
Also in Doom 2 we have map01, map02 and so on, not "mission01, mission02..."

check the readme in an older version of hideous destructor, it has pretty decent lore based on doom, although now it's been changed to fit freedoom instead
shit like the zm being a piece of drm locked crap, the origins of some of the demons, the possibly holy origins of armor/health bonuses and megaspheres etc...
the manual's basically required reading to play it right anyway, and explains why you shouldn't do stuff like combine using megaspheres and the blursphere

2.5D FPS engine is not actually that difficult so all the cheap studios made their own shitty FPS engine. the build engine was specifically designed to be used across multiple games so it was the obvious choice for the remaining games. carmack didn't care about engine licensing and famously would only agree to give an engine licensee, like, one days worth of his time, total. in total this made licensing the doom engine not a very attractive proposition, compared to a few years later when they started licensing the quake engine, which was a LOT more complex.

>> No.5906858

>>5899998
Carmack and Romero can have their opinions, just like everyone else. However, I don't think that Carmack's opinion that that the Build Engine is so utterly janky that it is held together overall with gum holds much weight since he never actually used it first-hand.

Well it has it's ups and downs. If you like absolutely huge maps and don't mind some switch hunts, they you'll propably enjoy it. If you want tighter, more gameplay oriented challenging experience, you propably won't like it. Anyway it's surely an atmospheric wad, and no one can deny it's influence on mapping scene.
