I could never finish them, that thrilling atmosphere scared the fuck out of me even when nothing was going on.

I'd say Splatterhouse pretty high up there. The gruesome imagery and body horror is still very effective to this day. Kinda wish the reboot kinda went more in the direction of the original games instead of just comical brutality.

Oh god, the death scenes in that game scarred me for life as a kid. For some reason, this shit is much more disturbing than any modern game could possibly be. Not sure why.
