Were people supposed to know about the crazy ass scoring and rank mechanics back in the arcade days? lots of games of that era relied on manuals, word of mouth and magazines but I still have a hard time thinking about how people figured half this shit out before they even got to dissect the rom.

I mean did magazines cover arcade games at that time?

I don't remember seeing Battle Garegga at arcades in my city.
I assume in Japan, they were published on arcade magazines, such as Gamest, or just fanzines.
Game Freak (the company of Pokemon) started as a fanzine talking about strats of Xevious.

No, that's why people had to look at the source code to figure out what the fuck was really going on.

Yeah they had magazines, you could also just watch people in arcades or if you went to akiba / otaku places they sold doujin VHS with pro player 1cc / scoring recordings.

No arcades in my city in germany either, but we got cool shops with like playstation displays that ran import shmups and the staff could tell you some tricks.

Just noticed rank screws spread types over because it takes exponentially longer to kill bosses and you need to graze and absorb more bullets therefore exponentially raising rank compared to forward shot types.
In fact don't even bother with normal powerups unless you've dead, there's no point in collecting anything besides the Special Powerup.

Extremely restrictive gameplay choices like that make me really hate that fraud Yagawa.

Here's a dirty little secret, arcade games become more fun if you don't care about 1shitshit clears.

Well, I've only 1cced Batrider, but I've played a decent amount of Bakraid and Garegga so here's my sense of it.

Spread and homing types in these games actually tend to be overpowered, and will really chew through bosses and enemies. It's definitely way easier to just get a clear with those types.

Where the skill really comes in to play is playing a narrow shot type and expertly controlling your options. This lets you milk bosses, destroy their specific parts and rack up a way higher score. Since your score is a lot higher, many more extends will drop, giving you lots of chances to intentionally die to lower your rank. It's really well balanced to reward extremely skilled play and high precision.

None of the above applies to Bakraid though, which has a weird chaining multiplier system, and turns into an orgy of incomprehensible bombing and suicide with high scoring play.

This it's all about the scoring

It's pretty rare for a game to expect you to be the absolute possible best at it. I imagine you were meant to just get as far as you could and be happy with whatever your score was.

It took a few months for anyone in japan to clear it
