http://pc.gamespy.com/pc/trinity-id-software/
>Carmack initially had high hopes for Trinity, hoping for a "killer game at the end of it" once the engine was fully formed and design work produced for it. This "alternate game" was the focus of his work (along with Brian Hook) while development at the rest of the team went into designing Quake III (then a Quake 2 mission pack.) Despite this, enthusiasm at the company was focused more on the idea of revisiting the hit Doom franchise, and coupled with tremendous advances in rendering technology (which would have best fit a Doom project), this led Carmack to realize that Id Software was not "going down the right path" with the efforts on Trinity concepts. On June 1, 2000, John Carmack officially announced via his .PLAN file that Id Software was working on a new single-player Doom game (utilizing brand new technology which became Id Tech 4) and thus effectively also announced the cease in development on Trinity concepts.

Superobscure forgotten Id project between Quake 3 and Doom3
I remember seeing photos of it in 2000s.

There are 2 main ports for it - DXX-rebirth and D2X-XL, both support first and second game and have similar list of features
Which source port is best, why, and what are the differences?

I don't want them in charge of that and I don't think they will.
Wolfenstein Youngblood was a flop both commercially and critically.
MachineGames did 3 things right:

-Quake 5th episode
Everything went horribly wrong since New Colossus.

Also add how much they want Doomguy in Smash.
Now I want him and all the reasons on why he should be in are fair but chill out and don't be a so obsessive about it. They're turning into Waluigi and Geno fanboys who never shut up about them.

Yes. The 1.1 version. Haven't tried 1.2 yet.
>What are your thoughts on it?
It's fun. Achieves what it sets out to do. Summoner as a replacement for the Archvile is extremely underpowered though, she is almost never an issue. NuBarons are the real threats. Chainsaw is OP (at least in this version). Gore nests have way too much HP imo.

1.2 apparently slightly buffed Summoners, slightly nerfed NuBarons and slightly nerfed the Chainsaw though, so maybe those complaints are moot now.

Youngblood is an absolute trainwreck of gameplay design, though.

Been on a huge Doom kick lately after ages, played through the megawad Valiant. Holy shit it blew me away, I think it's my favourite megawad ever, finally something I like more than Scythe1&2. Incredible map design (both aesthetically and in terms of layout), god tier gameplay flow and the new monsters/monster tweaks (e.g. imps' projectiles are faster) are so good. The star of the show though is that new chaingun, fuck me it's so satisfying.

Right after finishing Valiant I wanted more Doom so I loaded up Ancient Aliens, long time ago I started it but didn't bother completing it. It immediately became apparent how much I miss that awesome chaingun from Valiant, I think it has forever ruined Doom's chaingun for me unfortunately. I want Valiant 2 so bad, Skillsaw is incredible. I think I'd maybe give him the edge over Alm, but I'll have to return to the Scythes after to see. Very tough call. Skillsaw's maps are far more elaborately and intricately designed, more aesthetically pleasing, and he's made a lot more stuff. On the other hand Alm is probably the most influential mapper ever for modern Doom map design, you can feel his influence all over Valiant, but I do believe Valiant transcends the Scythes.

If you haven't played Valiant yet, get on that shit. Just amazing, I loved it so much. Here's a couple of audio webms from my experience:

Alright, I've worked on the fists a little more.
Now, the fists use ammo called "Fist Power" which spawns when you punch an enemy. Every normal hit gets you 1 Fist Power, every critical hit gets you 15, and every hit with a berserk pack gets you 3.
Pressing Zoom will cycle through Special Attacks, and pressing Reload uses the one currently selected. Each Special Attack uses a certain number of Fist Power, if you don't have enough you can't use the attack.
Currently I have 2 functioning Special Attacks:
Rocket Throw: If you have at least 1 RocketAmmo and at least 10 Fist Power, you can use your arms as a makeshift rocket launcher.
Charging Punch: If you have at least 8 Fist Power, you can unleash a gap-closing charge attack that propels you forward a fair distance.
I'm still trying to figure out how to make it so I can punch/kick switches to activate them.

>The initial alpha and beta versions of the Doom engine did not utilize binary space partitioning, but instead used a much slower and more limited ad hoc algorithm for stepping through the map's sectors directly. This algorithm was defeated during John Romero's work on E1M2: Nuclear Plant when a setup consisting of concentric circles around a pillar could not be handled properly. According to Romero, John Carmack was frustrated with these limitations, but ultimately discovered binary space partitioning trees through the work of University of Texas at Dallas researcher Bruce F. Naylor.[3]

Binary space partitioning goes back to 1969, but it was just really high end computer science/industrial shit, something you'd just never see on a typical home computer or office computer. Carmack was the first person to employ the concept for a game, and thus use it for a wide consumer market product.

If he hadn't, maybe someone else would have, but he had the right idea and opportunity to use it at the right time in history. If you were gonna do a realtime three dimensional, texture mapped world for a game in 1993, and have it run fast and efficiently on consumer grade machines, and not be Wolfenstein 3D, binary space partitioning was probably the only realistic way to do it.
That said it's impressive to just go tear up the engine during development and then rewrite it to apply a really advanced concept like that, and the game still only takes a year to make. Particularly given that nobody else had probably even tested applying it in such a manner before.

If you made it to the end without finding the secrets, then obviously you didn't need them after all, and the balance of the level didn't focus on them.

This.
Tracks like BFG Division and Rip and Tear are excellent but Doom 4 tracks are not that distinct from each other.
Bobby Prince work is legendary and needs to be represented.

They whole being OP is dumb because Samus Aran would canonically destroy a good chunk of the roster and yet she always been mid tier and outclassed by her zero suit version.

But as you said Smash fans are ignorant, all hyped for Banjo, a character who had 3 games and two portable games no one really cared about, whose owners did nothing with it for over a decade.
But Terry Bogard who had so many cameos, spin offs and crossovers, an icon of fighting games, a company who always cared about him, from a series which is extremely popular in Latin America.... doesn't deserve a spot.

I don't get it

Build still uses binary space partitioning as well, but yeah, applying portals is also a good way to do fast 3D in that era. TekWar wasn't exactly a stellar first demonstration of the technology, because the devs clearly struggled to understand it (among other things they didn't understand), you really needed a kickass game like Duke Nukem 3D to show just what Build could do, and that took a few years.

I always felt that that whoever makes lewd art of characters who wear helmets and keep it, do it for two reasons:
-Character never showed the face is forced to keep it
-Artist can't draw human faces properly

Nothing wrong with looking silly as hell. Maybe Crash doesn't even have a face. Who knows? That's half the fun. Or Slash wearing normal clothes and oversized shades is fine because at least in Q3A those shades are welded to her face.

>Not just an amazing secret level but one of the best maps ever made in a retro FPS, love the gimmick.
You know that gimmick is actually hard-coded into the game? No one at id thought to add gravity as a worldspawn option, so instead the game automatically lowers sv_gravity whenever it loads any map named E1M8.bsp. One of the few remnants of Doom-style dedicated level triggers and setups compared to how open-ended Quake's coding and level editing is otherwise.

>Speaking of Hunter,I don't understand why they didn't put her in Quake Champions.
>She's one of the most popular characters in Quake 3.
I don't know, but they've been teasing her literally since the day the game went into beta. She's mentioned by appearance and by name in Sorlag's lore entries, and they made a point of adding at least one character linked through rivalry or past encounters for each champion- Athena and Strogg, Ranger and Death Knight (presumably, his lore is retarded), Keel and Klesk, Slash and Anarki, Nyx and Scalebearer. Sorlag has no one except the feather-wearing Hunter mentioned in her lore. They also recently added a crappy little profile background image for the holidays with different character silhouettes and one of them is pretty clearly Hunter.

On the other hand, some of the females they've brought back have been severely toned down in the wardrobe department- Slash's holey leotard replaced with standard (albeit deliciously tight-fitting) derby girl shorts and pads, Nyx is curvy but not as explicitly sexual as Mynx. Athena was always armored and newcomer Galena has some sick-ass plate armor that still hints she has huge titties, though, so that might be a shoutout to that crusader lady in Q3TA I forgot the name of. In an ideal world, the only reason they haven't added Hunter is because the Russkies they've outsourced the art to would fucking riot if they were forced to censor her too much and refused to work no matter how much vodka was provided until Bethesda gave in. In reality, they probably have half a dozen models for characters already done and their one janitor and potted plant handling the code couldn't add them if they wanted to.

>>5883319
Champs Slash is cute even without the shades. At the very least she has actual expressions instead of the disconcertingly sex doll-like constant :O face her Q3A model has.

All right, here's my second attempt at making a map. It takes the MAP02 slot, uses DOOM2.wad as the IWAD, and is in Boom format. I tried experimenting with new things - more verticality, deaf monsters, blinking lights, transparency, importing new textures and sprites. It's still quite short and linear, but I think that this one ended up better than the first one.

Pretty fun map though, yes it's pretty linear but understandable given it's only your second try. I saw that collected torrent of Heavy Metal on /co/ a while back and saved it but never got around to downloading it because that's a fuckload of disk space and my connection speeds are third world tier.

Can't even look for newer reprints because there's always the chance they'll needlessly censor the fuck out of it like they did with Fistful of Blood, which is mediocre on its own as a retread of the standard pasketti western but with titties but makes pretty good masturbatory material if you're into that sorta' thing.

Vores and Enforcers as well, and sometimes Death Knights and Scrags if their AI wigs out. Grunts and Shamblers are the only hitscan enemies in the game. As for shotgun starts, most id1 levels are possible to play that way as they were designed separately and placed in the episodes themselves in a different order, with a notable exception being Sandy's episode that is meant to be played through in order and only gives out the most powerful weapons once or twice in the whole episode. The game itself supports ignoring shotgun starts by way of it not wiping your inventory when you die in a map; it just restores the state you were in when entering the map, after rounding up shotgun shells and health if they're too low.

I wonder why exactly Graf dislikes AMD so much?
Its fine having an optimized version of DOOM and other Idtech 1 games, but damn, the often poorly made shadowmaps, his obsession with making it necessary to have a computer with very high-end computer with not just a more modern CPU, but also at least a 1050-1060 Nvidia for said ""shadowmaps"" to work properly for games from the early-mid 1990s! Then there's the mods for said games that don't work well or not at all with the more recent versions of GZDOOM! Say what you want about the most recent versions of Eduke32, xDuke, and Nblood, but at least the coders for each of those Build sourceports aren't so haphazard with shadowmaps nor do they heavily recommend Nvidia over all other types of Graphics cards!

But then I also have a problem with that, because you're just doing guesswork on the balance. You're just kind of eyeballing "yeaahhh I think these two go well together". It's not something that's been playtested a bunch in unison and had its problems ironed out. You're just sort of picking and choosing two very gameplay altering things and saying "fuck it let's beta test these two and see what happens". And that's fine, if you like experimenting like that. >>5885308
That's understandable. In terms of gameplay mods that's why I love Ultra Crispy. You clearly have the advantage of being Caleb on a weapon standpoint but you also take more damage than usual.

Also why I prefer Guncaster Vindicated over the original.
The latter is well polished and can be fun to mess around but it gets boring when you're unstoppable.
You have all these tools but you can stick to just few of them and win anyway.
Vindicated makes it more "balanced" and little less power fantasy. Also helps it comes with Project Brutality monsters and can also be changed with other enemy mods

It's the latter. You were deceived by shitters who savescum every 5 seconds and never pistol start.

Sigil isn't that hard on UV. I mean sure it's hardER than the Ultimate Doom (ackshually E4M1, E4M2, and E4M6 might be harder than some of the stuff in Sigil). But if you've done any dooming besides that, specially something like Plutonia or PWADs, then Sigil is very tame by comparison.

There's some areas with legitimately bad design though, specially for pistol starting. There's a couple of maps (Like Abaddon's Void, I think E5M5) that lacks a chaingun in the whole map, so you have to pistol a bunch of shit to save shotgun ammo. That feels more like a mistake than a deliberate choice.

Then there's also the secret level (E5M9) whose cyberdemon at the end is rather...boring. Sure, it's a """puzzle"""" When you enter the castle looking thing, don't shoot so you don't wake up the cyberdemon, only wake him up after taking all the shit on the floor and the eye secret), but even then it's such a bore to kill him having to be picky with the plasma gun and then rocket/shotgun/chaingun him down. That one is just boring, not hard.

Well it was never an obscene ballbuster episode, it's just kind of like if Romero had made Thy Flesh Consumed all by himself, and then designed it mostly around the same difficulty level you'd see in E4M2, which is pretty tough.

I think we're looking for different things. The novelty of a pure weapons pack is good. The variety in monster addons is good. I just don't really enjoy the struggle to find a good balance mix and matching, so I don't feel like an unstoppable juggernaut or like a hilariously underpowered bastard. If you are not anal about these things, then yeah there's no problem, but if you prefer experiences that are more consistent, then it's kind of a deal breaker

Why would you assume people who don't deliberately make the game game harder for themselves and play in a casual way are the ones complaining about the difficulty?
If anything the "git gud"-memery makes people frustrated when they play in restrictive ways on difficulties that don't suit them and brings about retards who insist on playing every WAD on UV and then cry about the hard mode of the game being hard.

Am I the only one worried about Doom Eternal?

I'm hyped for it but also fear it might not turned out to be that good.

First is the whole "Doom Universe".
When a series plans to expand its world for upcoming releases, there's a 50/50 chance that the entry that suppose to kickstart that might turn out to be lackluster or bad. This goes for both movies and games.

We already have pre-order stuff and upcoming DLCs. Unfortunately these are really common in modern Triple A industry, given how Bethesda interfered in other devs games of properties they own and their track record, it's not a good sign.

The footage shown so far and the demo in fact might be the few parts in-game while the rest is locked behind a paywall as extra maps to play, The game might be really short.

Gameplay-wise is promising but the newest levels don't seem that engaging or different from each other. Also the new hud looks mediocre.

They clearly have big plans for Doom but I don't want they're trying to hide the shady stuff hidden in Eternal when it will come out.

Fosta/sesta does not target online porn in and of itself. Most of the stuff it targets is online promotion and harboring of prostitution, which is not the same thing as drawing X-rated stuff or making X-rated stories. Still, I think it can go too far if it becomes law. Either way, both main parties in the USA are full of it, just in different ways, with the Democrats whining about a border wall being "bad for relations and the environment", ICE being "evil", and other soap box trash and their covering of the Clintons' skeleton in their closet. Then we have the Republicans, who while being more sane on certain economic things and gun rights, have many among their ranks that wish to impose at least some of their personal values onto the whole nation via certain bills like SESTA as well as those who denying certain scientific realities. Then there's the fact that both parties aren't doing much of anything to reprimand Israel on their war crimes in Gaza, parts of the West bank and the Golan heights issue. Many on 4/pol/ and 8/pol/ got tricked by Trumps boastful promises and Alt-Right controlled opposition scammers like Milo, and Richard "double agent Larper" Spencer.

Graf is a lazy asshole I agree, but going point by point
Its fine having an optimized version of DOOM and other Idtech 1 games, but damn, the often poorly made shadowmaps, his obsession with making it necessary to have a computer with very high-end computer with not just a more modern CPU, but also at least a 1050-1060 Nvidia for said ""shadowmaps"" to work properly for games from the early-mid 1990s!
I have an RX 460 and an i3-6100. The IWADs run perfectly with all the fancy eyecandy enabled and you very rarely get drops in the majority of limit-removing/Boom shit. Gameplay mods with a fuckload of particle effects are more often than not the main cause of performance drops for most people.
>Then there's the mods for said games that don't work well or not at all with the more recent versions of GZDOOM!
Use Zandronum for those particular mods. Also getting a shitload of errors on startup =/= mod doesn't work
>Say what you want about the most recent versions of Eduke32, xDuke, and Nblood, but at least the coders for each of those Build sourceports aren't so haphazard with shadowmaps
t. hasn't played eDuke32 in Polymer mode
>nor do they heavily recommend Nvidia over all other types of Graphics cards!
Carmack had always preferred Nvidia's interpretation of OpenGL over AMD/ATI's. AMD also has shit support for any version of OpenGL older than 3, which was Graf's main reason (besides the usual laziness) to eventually change the renderer to OpenGL 3 and eventually Vulkan. AMD completely shits all over NVIDIA in Vulkan rendering, btw.

Well, maybe you could pitch it to Matt? He does listen to input on things occasionally.
I imagine that maybe some weapons should be more affected by it than others, like handguns would probably have their sight picture shake the most during running.

>At least the reload can be pretty fast here by giving up on the mag, which is cool. Too many games think 10 seconds reloads are totally realistic for a trained soldier..
Oh yeah, I like that too. It peeves me that some games will do that, because it's just needlessly slow, I get it with some guns, but most infantry combat rifles since the 50s really are pretty straight forward and brief to load.

It's why I aim to make my own animations expedient. Heat is an inspiration, Val Kilmer absolutely *nails* the reloads on the CAR15.

>>5886559
That was backported from Heretic, which does have that behavior. I figure Graf just thinks it feels better for gameplay, and I can't say this is one of the points I disagree with him on, particularly given that Doom did that behavior as a shortcut to save on memory, under the premise that the original episodes don't really do very much with verticality anyway, and that looking at certain mapsets (even Final Doom), there's far more of that.

You can go into the menu for Compatibility Options and toggle on the original behavior as you please, along with a couple of other original behaviors.

No it's just that everything is running on a single thread out of the 12 cores of your fancy Ryzen or housefire Intel. So you're heavily CPU limited, even though your CPU isn't being used at all.
Proper optimizations could fix this but that's not happening if you're Graf. The Vulkan renderer works well simply because Vulkan need much less CPU power than OGL for the same things.

That's because it is the exact same one from 3 except he took out the windup, when he should've used the SMG as base and just increased DPS instead. much easier and reliable than that space age piece of junk.

Classic Doom 3 as a whole is one of those things that you can see working on a conceptual basis, but you need to have a grasp for those tiny nuances that make base Doom what it is beyond a new coat of paint to have work proper. Shame it was abandoned in its current state, it's still pretty raw.

Ive posted this before, but Eviternity really pissed me off with this. In this map, there's an area where they used a middle texture for a wall. They did this so the line could use 3 textures instead of just upper and lower or just middle. Looks real fancy and professional, huh? The issue is that middle textures do not block projectiles like a regular wall would. So I was trying to take cover behind this solid-looking wall and got fucking killed. That really epitomizes the kind of detailing circlejerk faggotry some mappers engage in.

IMO, the "visuals over gameplay" thing was more predominant back in the mid-late 00's. It was an era where too many people relied on tormentor's detail guide, resulting in a lot of maps that implemented detailing without understanding how to pull it off effectively. Also a lot of ambitious Zdoom projects like KDIZD that were basically just detail wank, with mediocre gameplay.
Visuals are still pretty big nowadays, but I think most good mappers have gotten smarter about its implementation.

Unless the wad is specifically designed to be hard, it usually goes like this:
Hurt Me Plenty - easy
Ultra-Violence - normal/how it's meant to be played

Nightmare - really hard/potentially impossible

Difficulties below Hurt Me Plenty were meant for people new to fps games back in the early 90s

Pwads are almost always designed with the expectation that the audience has already played through Doom 2, and is already familiar with its mechanics. And as such, they don't put on the training wheels for people that should already know how to ride a bike.
The fact that Doom 2 is 25 years old also doesn't help the case for treating it as the standard for difficulty. Plenty of people in the community will have completed dozens, if not hundreds of pwads on top of doom 2 itself.

I mean it depends on what you're playing, some people make a very conscious effort to balance each difficulty level, and they really do intend for Hey Not To Rough as Easy, Hurt Me Plenty as Medium, and Ultra-Violence as Hard.
That scale isn't constant either, depending on what the author goes for, it might still be pretty hard on HNTR and HMP, and UV being intended as an ultimate ballbuster, conversely you have .wads (such as Doom and Doom 2), which are mostly pretty easy going even on UV.

The point is that difficulty levels for Doom are not a constant, just because the original game is easy on UV doesn't mean that some wads aren't gonna give you a real hard time even on HMP. Some people are too proud for their own good and will refuse to swallow said pride for something as tiny as allowing themselves to better enjoy a video game.

>> No.5888423

>>5888304
I don't think so, because most people who have played Doom 2 a few times on UV would easily come to the conclusion that its style of gameplay isn't particularly challenging.

The original games weren't ever intended to be super challenging, Nightmare! difficulty, Thy Flesh Consumed, and The Plutonia Experiment, all came about because people did like the game, but many wished it was more challenging.
A lot of .wad authors would be more inclined to make HNTR more analogous to Doom 2s UV because of this, rather than limit themselves.

True, but you still wanted to use something to make rendering more efficient at that time, even Quake, which was full software 3D, used binary space partitioning to make sure an average 1996 computer could score at least 20fps at most times.

If you look at Terminator Future Shock, 1995, it was a game that was also mostly rendered in software 3D, and though looking amazing at the time, with 3D enemies and everything, I assume it didn't employ binary space partitioning, since it had VERY short draw distance, concealed by darkness, just because that was the only way to have those kinds of graphics without some kind of really smart optimization like Carmack or Silverman was doing (not to say Build employed software 3D, but levels were rather complex and detailed in the later Duke Nukem 3D, which even in 1996 would just not be workable without employing binary space partitioning).

The RNG table is a bit generous to them, yeah, but that makes them A), more dangerous and thus more exciting to fight, and B), more effective if you lead their rockets into other dudes.

A protip with skellies is to try to close the distance between you and them, because once you're close enough, they will stop trying to shoot at you and start trying to punch you, and if you can maintain that distance, he isn't shooting at you.

It sounds silly but i always imagine that if i were to make a game, i'd add a bunch of characters who just represent different archetypes and kinds of characters that almost resemble different fetishes.
Inclusing a few muscular girls.
Like, mostly noticeable on certain NPC's but even playable characters would appeal to someone's fetish or kink.
Some wouldn't even be secret fetishes but just character cliches or stuff someone thinks is cool, even if the direction becomes inconsistent.
Worst that can happen is forming an Undertale/RWBY like fanbase and shitty discourse, along with the game being shit but as long as the porn and even cute art is good and the actual game is also good and not just a poor excuse, there's some goodness in the world.
And that is if i ever get to do something with them and not letting a bunch of DONUT STEEL characters fade away in time as forgotten Deviantart rejects or if a hypothetical game would gain a certain amount of attention.
I thought an OC of mine could be used for a Doom mod, that i even thought of a Hexen Wraithverge rip off that shoots bees.
