I actually just bought a Dreamcast for the first time today. I grew up exclusively with Nintendo consoles, and I'm really excited to play it. I'm gonna party like it's 1999.

That's the 32X and the Saturn. The Dreamcast was a success and if it occured in a void Sega would likely continue. It just couldn't recoop losses from before, and the PS2 was around the corner so everyone jumped to the PS2 next.

I remember working all summer in 1999 saving up for this console. I was 14 years old at the time and I reserved it from Electronics Boutique at the Riverchase Galleria in Hoover Alabama. I think my reservation down payment was $40?...it's been 20 years, I don't remember all the details, I do remember getting a free debut copy of the Official Dreamcast Magazine. On 9.9.99 I bought my Dreamcast and got 2 free T-shirts with the Dreamcast logo on them (I still have them in my closet). I bought a couple launch games: Sonic Adventure and Hydro Thunder. Sonic Adventure didn't work when I first got it as it was one of the bad batches of discs that hampered launch day. I did play Sonic Adventure before, however, as I had rented it previously from Hollywood Video as part of a pre-launch rental promotion between Sega and Hollywood video....which was awesome. (I remember the game camera being a lot more glitchy in the rental version...it got cleaned up a lot by the final release, but still a bit of a pain.)

I also bought a carrying bag for instances when I might take my DC to a friend's house and there was also special promotional packaging for the Dreamcast on launch day (plastic bags, promotional flyers, et cetera) that can with my purchase. Seems like I also bought a Bradygames strategy guide for Sonic Adventure. I would've bought Tokyo Xtreme Racer at the time too if I'd known how fucking awesome that game was at the time.

I think I'll dump some launch pics. Not mine, but someone else's I found on the internet.

To me, the 128 bit era was the last great era of home console video gaming...at least as far as the big name developers. Nowadays there's just too much money involved in it to take risks and originality gets hampered in the process. I'd also say that the excitement for new hardware doesn't seem to be there anymore. We're still not at the point of photo realistic graphics, but we're close. The clarity that 128 bit brought was breathtaking at the time. Not as big as the switch from the 16 bit to 32 bit era, but being able to see real facial expressions on character's faces and seeing the fine details on the cars of your favorite racing game...that was really some new shit at the time.

Yes and no. Sure Saturn didn't sell a lot of consoles, but Sega was still somewhat profitable during it's lifetime. The 32X is what did the most damage I'd say. Without the 32X and a better handled launch Saturn probably could have done decently.

What really did kill Sega financially though was the Dreamcast. Sure it was selling hand over fist but Sega was selling it at a huge loss. That's part of why Stolar was fired. He set the price so low that Sega was losing money and they couldn't undo it after the launch and announcements.

So ironically while the Dreamcast was selling, it was what ran Sega into the red because of how much of a loss they were selling it at. Think launch Sony PS3 losses but without the financial backing Sony had to cope with it.

20 years already? I remembered my family getting the Japanese version of the console back in 98 with Sonic Adventure, Soul Calibur and Blue Stinger. Both the console and the games blew my little 10 year old mind that year and I later got the American version of the console two years later for Christmas to play American games.

What killed Sega the most was Nintendo and Sony marketing style-over-substance garbage to new gamers at the time. Garbage like Mario 64 and Metal Gear Solid and Final Fantasy VII were shiny but a pile of shit to actually play as a real videogame. Sega stuck to the more traditional games for the most part and delivered masterpieces like Nights but since it wasn't OMGREALTHREEDEE gimmicky garbage, no one cared. And by the time they caved in and delivered the clunky as fuck Sonic Adventure, they were already getting pummeled by zombie nugamers sucking Nintendo and Sony's cock.
Helps if you weren't a little kid and actually remember how everything was back then. I was an adult very closely watching how things were going at the time, and while Sega did pull some bonehead shit to knock them backwards, the main problem was Sony and Nintendo luring people into shit games.

Oh look, one of the aforementioned dick-sucking Sony/Nintendo fans. I had no favorites, I just watched what was going on and watched Nintendo and Sony fuck over gaming so bad that it has basically devolved into complete and utter garbage that has ruined the industry for classic gamers these days. Almost NO games now are worth playing, and it's all the fault of the mid-90s attempt to make games into stylish anti-games with bad controls, gimmicks, storyshit, and/or other garbage that make them not fun and not worth playing.

The only one near me was closed recently, I was extremely sad, as somehow it had managed to stay in business despite changing owners and having lost many good games (this place at one point had a 2-player setup of 2Spicy, good luck finding that anywhere now). The most depressing part is that it had an OutRun 2 Super Deluxe setup with the four mini ferraris and 50" projection displays. That was by far the greatest arcade game I ever played, and I will miss it for years to come.

This is the only console which i look back at my teenage years and vividly recall. PS2 was there as well as the XBOX but something about the Dreamcast just made it much more appealing.

I remember haivng the keyboard for Typing of the Dead and Phantasy Star Online. The microphone was great for Seaman and Alien Front Online. Plus not having a gaming PC growing up it was the only way I could enjoy Unreal Tournament and Quake III Arena.

Fucking amazing console.

As a kid I was pretty starved for games being a poorfag, a really small collection of games for megadrive and N64, though I could swap with others. All of a sudden I could buy tons of isos off some dude in uk for about €2.00 each (I had 56k at the time so it was impossible for me to download big files, also I didn't even have a PC when I first got a dreamcast). I was getting thousands of old NES, SNES, genesis games I was able to emulate on the dreamcast (SNES fairly dodgy though) also newly released cutting edge games like Metropolis Street Racer, San Francisco Rush, Dead or Alive 2, RE: Code Veronica, Skies of Arcadia, GTA2, Rayman 2, Quake 3 Arena online - not ideal with 56k and controller but I still played all day every day for a while, and lots more practically for free.

This.

Dreamcast didn't kill sega, it was their swan song after a decade of subpar consoles/addons/shit game libraries. I gave the Dreamcast a shot and the game it came with was some cringey Sanic garbage that looked nice, played smooth, but had some cancer-tier cutscenes and dialog. Then I tried something called BlueStinger that turned out to be tedious crap. I played Gundam Sidestory Whateverthefuck and it turned out to be fun but short. Code Veronica was interesting but the story was retarded. Rainbow Six was pretty amazing and it made me wish Syphon Filter would get ported over. Besides that, there was just an ocean of grindy cookie cutter JRPG trash and that glorified sailor hide and seek QTE Shenmue crap.

They had one last chance to get things right and the hardware engineers knocked it out of the park only to be let down by a largely underwhelming library.
