CS is also popular in countries like Brazil and Romania, it's a game that can and could be had for cheap.
And it is very difficult and deep. Still, any idiot can pick it up, run around and shoot. Pre-Esports it brought together international talent and teams, the best of each country or continent competing.
That's the appeal to it.
In comparison Quake seems like a game for queers.

Honestly, this shit was to be expected. It's like going into the dumbass class back in school and saying the class is for dumb people - it's bound to cause a backlash. For many years arena people just knew they were better but we weren't loud about it, now it seems like there's this wave of people bandwagoning on saying cs is shit and while true half of those probably played cs back in the day and only found out about the reality in the past few years.

engine was amazing. good but sucked for team games, ctf and tdm was boring as fuck to watch

all in all quake's tech was a big step forward from descent but cs really popularized the military team shooter and esports to the western audience. if either were shit gaming would probably still be a cottage industry
