Hey anon that suggested a mod to change HL1's weapon damage values here. I noticed that there's something called skill.cfg in the valve file of HL1 with the health stats for the enemies and damage stats for the weapons too. Could I just change the values in this and run it ingame?

keep in mind I have no idea how to mod games beyond changing cfgs and inis which obviously doesn't count

Update, this really came as no surprise cus all I did was change the CFG file, but I changed the values for the pistol and shotgun from 8-5 to 999 each. I loaded up surface tension, and suddenly the soldiers went down the instant I shot them as well as the infamous helicopter over the dam.

I really think I'm on to something here, I'm thinking of doing an actual change in the values for all the weapons at some point and uploading the CFG for all to play. Any suggestions for damage values?

somebody mentioned that it was the steam version that changed the numbers, so i think i'm going to get ahold of the original CD and compare those files real quick, other than that i think the main things that need to be changed are:
-lower soldier health
-lower soldier damage
-increase smg damage
-possibly lower alien grunt health
-maybe decrease the turret damage? they're easy enough to take down so i'm not sure that'd be a fair change
hopefully other half life anons ITT can suggest precise amounts or other enemies that should be tweaked

Sigil is solid. Worth downloading. Not as great as the original 3 Episodes, but still fun. Plus it's obviously cool as shit that it even exists.

Ion Fury is recommended if you're a fan of the Build Trinity. The first third of the game has STRONG level design that goes downhill later on with a lot of tunnels and shit. The devs didn't understand their own strengths as level designers. The wide open city levels are AMAZING and there's not nearly enough of those kinds of levels in the middle and later parts of the game. Weapons are also underwhelming, especially in comparison to the Build Trinity (which, to be fair, have some of the best weapon arsenals of any games ever). The most surprising thing is how faithful it is to the 90s FPS experience. Aside from it doing things that would have been impossible in the real Build Engine, it plays EXACTLY like a game from 20 years ago. It's so faithful to the gameplay and design of 90s FPSes that it's genuinely astonishing. Every other attempt at a modern "retro FPS" has always felt a little "off" in some way or another in comparison to the games it was imitating, even if the game was still great. This game doesn't miss by even a degree.

2.5 D is when either grapically or gameplay wise 3D dimension is completely omitted.
Sprite RTS emulated elevation, that is 2.5 D.
Some platformers and fighting games limit the gameplane to a single plane making gameplay 2D while maintaining 3D visuals. That is 2.5D.

Doom 1/2 worlds are 3D, as player, projectiles and monsters can move in all 3 dimensions.
and gameplay is fully 3D with all 3 axis involved. 3d axis is only omitted in some calculations for performance purposes, but is present in many.

Guten Tag.

A lot of weapon statistics apart from damage are defined within the dlls, which means you need to actively mod the source code to change those, which is probably beyond what you're intending to do.
Valve fixed this with HL2 where all the weapon statistics are defined in special files, which lets you change them easily, they wanted to implement a similar system for HL but ran out of time.

Heres comments and advice on weapons:
The crowbar could use a slight damage uptick to make rushing in and potentially taking loads of damage worth it, in the game it's only ever good for autistically saving ammo by harassing zombies and headcrabs, or just smashing the environment to progress.
The pistol is good as is, headshots make quick work of anything and it's supposed to be a somewhat low tier weapon anyway.
The revolver is good as is, it's a very powerful weapon and kills soldiers with one headshot.
As for the SMG, grunts seem pretty bulletspongy because of the SMG being inaccurate and dealing a good chunk less damage than the peestol, upping that will make the MP5 feel stronger but might make the pistol obsolete, you can't change the accuracy outside of code, so beware.
The shotgun feels weak because it has huge hollywood spread, upping the buckshot damage only changes one pellet, and the pellet amounts and spread are once again hardcoded, you might make point-blank shots too strong if you up it too far.
The crossbow is good as is, very powerful.
All energy and explosive weapons have good damage values so leave them as is, the grenade is the only exception, most people ignore them but I make use of them very intensly.
You can't adjust explosion range outside the code, but they're scaled according to damage.

I'm not sure what you can change for enemies except making human grunts a bit weaker, alien grunts are supposed to be chunky, but controllers are stupidly spongy and I hate fighting them, take them down a notch.

I took your cfg and booted up Surface Tension to try it out.
I think you might have gone too far in a few places.
HECU die in one shotgun blast from mid range away, I was lucky with the spread once and managed to kill the turret and grunt outside the cliffside pipe with one shotgun blast each, from long distance, that's silly.
The SMG can kill hgrunts in a short burst, and the inaccuracy is the only balance factor, if you stand next to them you can mow them like grass.
I said that alien grunts are supposed to be chunky, but you made them die from 20 rounds of the SMG as well as ONE SINGLE SHOTGUN BLAST.
That's just fucking silly, you sneeze and the prime chads of Xen drop dead.
Remember, if you increase damage and lower enemy health, you basically buff the player's killing power twice over, that's a pitfall that a lot of people fall into with "rebalance" configs.

I'm probably not gonna try your next config if you make one, but some advice:
Guns are somewhat tiered, that's why they vary in power so strongly, and why you don't get a lot of pistol ammo in later chapters, they fill a role.
You shouldn't feel like the Doomguy running around and cutting down soldiers, Doom hitscanners are pathetic cannon-fodder, HL ones are the main enemy for the largest part of the game.
Alien grunts are supposed to be chunky and a threat, if you see one you should unpack the big guns or get some distance, they shouldn't die if you sneeze at them.
I didn't kill any controllers but you should probably make their health as high as vanilla grunts, that makes them weaker but still formidable.

Finally finished Ancient Aliens on UV, pistol starting, blind, and without in-level saves.

What a journey that was. Would definitely recommend.

MAP23 (by Pinchy) and MAP28 (by Joshy) were the hardest in the WAD, at least for me. MAP29 ended up being sort of a push-over, despite having 900 enemies. I think my favorite maps, My favorite skillsaw maps were MAP08 and MAP16, probably.

Where do I go from here? Valiant? Eviternity? Vanguard? Lunatic? Also, I heard there's some WAD coming out soon with the textures from Ancient Ayys, how's that project called?

I think Doom 2 is the best FPS ever made in terms of simply having fun while playing, but I still have some issues with it, and the biggest one is that you're faster than everything else, so the mappers are forced to close you in with monsters or you'll just run away and shoot everything from a safe distance. The turn is somewhat slow, if you see a skelly about to fire, try to get behind something, then the rocket may strike that instead (ideally, make him hit another monster).
Cover is more useful than you'd think in Doom, don't be afraid to use it every now and then.
Eventually you'll get used to the speed and turning of his rockets, you get a feel for them, and you'll find that you can even start circling the rocket, even goad it into a wall or other enemy with enough space to move.

Also, if you close the distance, he will stop trying to shoot because he wants to try punching you, and if you can get that close while staying out of his knuckle radius, you can be relatively safe.

Thanks for the tips. So it seems like generally the best strategy is to steer the rockets into a wall, since the rockets are slow to turn. Sort of similar to how you need cover to avoid the arch vile flames. Lots of wads with high monster counts and even some official maps always try to throw a lot of revanants at once and it always makes me shit my pants. They're the main enemies that have made slaughter levels feel like total non starters for me.

I mean yeah, you could describe them as "tanky imps" but the Cacodemon floats, and the baron of hell is a sweet elite monster. the cyberdemon meanwhile is an intense boss monster and the spider mastermind is a hitscan boss. I dont think its that samey, theres enough variety to make any map feel fresh. especially if you put in a lot of monsters to cause some infighting. i think doom 1's bestiary has a pleasing simplicity. zombieman and shotgun guys are hitscan enemies where you need cover, imps throw projecticles, demons are melee monsters, and cacodemons and barons are projectile enemies but with tough hitpoints.

I doubt it. How do you fuck up loading a wad after another, especially with ZDL? It's just clear that some map wads have differences in how they handle music mods, Sigil is still fine but the improved 64 maps from BD64 just play my favorite gameplay mod's menu music forever even across levels.
I'll be going with some creepy ambient sounds instead, seems more fitting for both.

I always liked the razorjack. The rippers secondary fire was boringm function wise. At least with the razorjack you could steer it a little and sorta skip it along walls and such. It was good for skipping it around corners.
The ripper's secondary was probably more useful on a case-to-case basis, but again:boring. It just blows up. Whoopity shit.

I like that the OG monster roster was there for the most part, or rather what would be their spiritual successors. That being said the cast does feel bloated a bit. Also the game was way too fucking long and its overdependance on arenas turned tiresome not long after I reached chapter 4.

I still stand by my opinion that Doom 2016 did arenas the best out of any game that tried hand at basing the combat around them. The game felt concise.

That was a cross promotion with Saint's Row The Third, I think.
Shadow Warrior, at least the version I bought, came with a bunch of options you could toggle for a preferred sword, a default one, one that looks sorta like the classic one with the barbs down on the spine of the blade, as well as some others, like a sledge hammer, the Excalibat out of the Rise Of The Triad remake, some sort of laser katana, and The Penetrator, out of Saint's Row. All cosmetic, performance will depend on what sword you actually have (and Default would just present the actual sword you had).

I'll say the game actually gives you a lot of options for graphics and stuff, particularly regarding how most console ports have dogshit for customization, if I recall correctly, it even let me turn off filters and shaders (like chromab), and configure my own crosshair style.

I like that each enemy in the Shadow Warrior reboot filled its own role, they all did something different and would require you to apply different tactics, and they played off each other well.

They *completely* threw that shit out of the window for Shadow Warrior 2, featuring a small variety of different monsters with certain behaviors, and then a couple of basically reskin sets of them, a demon set, a robot set, etc (if there's a demon of a certain kind, there'll be robot and yakuza equivalents to it, which behave exactly the same just with new appearances/sound and tweaked stats). It's kind of unbelievable how massively they dumbed down the gameplay in the sequel, you can apply the exact same tactics to 80% of all enemies, it fucks me in the ass just how mindless it all is.
It's a very quantity over quality kind of game, there's lots of stuff, but a lot of it is very much the same and there's little actual variety to be found in gameplay.
