I had a ridiculous collection of roughly 300 up until the early 2000's, but as time went by, I realised what I appreciated most were great layouts and vehement opinions: the original DieHard GameFan was of course my favourite.

Ok

I liked that they seemed to care about video games and not about ads.

Sure, maybe I was just being young. But not too many games were ever sacred. If Nintendo released a new version of Mario is Missing in this day and age gaming sites would bend over backwards for Nintendo's innovation. Back then the best Nintendo could hope for was a mealy mouthed mediocre review.

I think it would be nice to create an oldschool magazine, on paper, that you could only get by subscription, but would cost almost nothing, only the paper and the ink used in the magazine, and the shipping too. I have most of the Hardware necessary (a scanner, a printer, some paper, an Amiga and I just need to make a floppy of Page ). I think it could be a nice idea of Fanzine.

Anyway, do you know why there is these crappy Korea mmo ads instead the J-List one? These new ads make me want to puke.

The biggest memory of magazines I have was a special issue of a famous french pc magazine (that's right, more french itt) that would be released every 3 months. It would come with 3 cds : the first one would have TONS of demos (almost 100 each time), the 2nd one a fuckton of sharewares and also other goodies (like usermaps for games like Duke3D or Quake, very convenient because I didn't have the internet yet), and the last cd would come with 3 older full games.

This magazine made me discover SO MANY games you have no idea. My PC gaming childhood was defined by this magazine.

Anybody french itt also knew this magazine?

Here is an example of that magazine. I fondly remember the full game "Sleepwalker". It's a genius concept that was only done twice in the history of video games AFAIK : it's a puzzle platformer where you have to guide/help a sleepwalker and make sure he never dies or wakes up. You don't control him but control another character (in this case, a dog; but it was also ripped off in a Casper game).

this magazine made me discover thousands of games. Most fondly Crazy Cars 3 (aka Lamborghini American Challenge) and of course Duke Nukem 3D

Back when I regularly bought gaming mags I didn't bother reading the reviews most of the time, I just enjoyed looking at the pictures and deciding what game to get based on if the game looked fun or not. Not really a foolproof method, but it brought me some great titles, no doubt.

Craziest thing that happened was when the mags started including DVDs from E3 with all the trailers. I watched the shit out of those. I didn't really go on the internet for my gaming news just yet, and getting the trailers on DVD quality was a godsend.

RIP in peace, Gaming mags. You still hold a special place in my heart.

Yeah, those were cheat collections. Or rather, they included walkthroughs, maps, cheats, but also "pokes", listing for programs you'd load before the game or midifications to do once the game was loaded. In the Basic language "poke" is the instruction to change the content of a memory address for a loaded program. And since many old computer OS had no memory access protection and integrated basic languages, they effectively worked as Action Replay codes. Load the program, poke, run, and voilà, you're invincible/rich/the best.

After browsing the thread about Amiga I found out that there's still PRINTED magazine with cover CD for Amiga:
amigafuture.de
I downloaded some older issues and boy, you can feel the difference between this and contemporary magazines. It's full of jokes, interesting interviews (no Today we talk with CEO who has no clue about games but rather Today we talk with guy who makes the most kickass remixes of vidya tunes) and it has programming sections, choosing the right upgrades sections (and it's unbiased!) and there are even NEGATIVE reviews (GASP!). Even the ads have the oldschool feel - big photo of some expansion and goofy text like IT'S TIME TO SET THE WORLD ABLAZE!

That's probably it - that goofy, semi-amateuristic feel.
