Most impressive DOS games? 2D or 3D is fair.

Kinda looking for underrated games to play.

it was such a based game, albeit small. I feel like later levels were rushed but still an awesome experience.

For real. I would play Scorched Earth, Syndicate, Alien Breed, Incredible Machine, Stormlord. Impressive for different reasons than technically.

The problem with DOS is how many games were made again for Windows or were overshadowed and made obsolete by a game that came out only a short period later.

That is one I left off that is good but I think the later port of it should be played. The Enhanced edition.

I can only be so damn patrician before I ask myself why I am commuting myself to a worse version of something.

The first GTA blew my mind back in the day. I was addicted. Amazing how the idea was already there but other developers only caught on after GTA 3

4 GB in 16 MB chunks, I think?!
I highly doubt that any DOS game ever used more than 64 MB..not sure.

Some professional software like Autodesk 3D Studio DOS could theoretically use a lot more, because when you ran out of memory the system began swapping to disk and the performance immediately tranked.

I think some devs beat R* to the GTA3 punch. Urban Chaos was really similar to GTA3. I think if it came out on a 2000-2001 hardware it would have been far better.

This game and Transport Tycoon were legit impressive - maybe not graphic wise but the sheer amount of entities that the game engine can handle is astounding.
Fun fact: transport tycoon and rollercoster tycoon were written entirely by a single person in assembly language.

I had a demo disc with a handful of games on it. For whatever reason Settlers 2 demo had to be installed. If you clicked on the folder it installed into you could choose the full game.

I can't even remember anything else about the demo disc either. It was definitely Settler 2.

Twinsens Odysee impressed me a lot. You play it for awhile thinking its pre rendered but then you find out you can change the camera whenever you want. Its also open world with a lot of interaction. It also ran well on low end pcs while having graphics not really possible on console.

I've wanted to play Laser Squad for a little while, but haven't gotten around to it. I'm catastrophically bad at strategy/tactics games and XCOM feels way too much for me, but Laser Squad seems like a good midpoint where it's still clearly in the lineage of XCOM (it's also made by Julian Gollop) but easier to hop into while not being as oversimplified as Rebelstar.

I never did finish it. Being a long term console-fag at the time of its release I insisted on using a gamepad. Maybe some of the younger members of this board don't know, but pre-xbox controller PC gamepads were a joke with extremely limited compatibility. It was barely playable, made sniping much harder than necessary. Always meant to revisit it with mouse and keyboard now that I've seen the error of my ways, but the Steam and GoG versions both have game breaking rendering bugs and it's iffy in dosbox. :(

DOS is barely an OS. It's damn near perfect for high performance though because it's practically non-existent once a game launches DOS/4GW or cwsdpmi or any 32bit code of your choice.
Microsoft should have made a game mode for windows that shuts down EVERYTHING except also brings DirectX and the driver model to an otherwise bare metal game code.
Windows gaming is a pile of hacks to try and get exclusive hardware access on an OS that both provides interfaces to GET this low level access AND takes it away providing fake interfaces that pretend to have done so.
