So I was just writing some music, and I think I accidentally wrote something that has already been made. I can't put my finger on it, but it sounds insanely familiar, pretty sure its from a video game. Does anyone recognize what this sounds like?

doesn't sound like anything i can remember. the way it's written isn't uncommon so maybe that's what you're hearing? the melody of it, at least to my old ears, sounds original enough.

It's typical repeating arpeggio plus melody that many games use, so it sounds familiar but isn't quite the same as anything. By the way, any other programs or plugins you use? There is an old Sony package they made specifically with all sorts of 'retro' game sounds but it is ACID WAV format and I never used that shit in my life.

1. The melody is pretty good. It's singable, with a good contour and syncopation. It's probably similar to something but if it's a direct copy I don't know it. I'd bet it's not.

2. The meter is a little fuzzy. The accompaniment seems to have the root of the chord on the downbeat, but the emphasis winds up being on the fifths at the top of the figure. This makes it feel a bit off-kilter. Some kind of introduction could help here. The first note just kind of shows up and there's no sense of the rhythm.

3. The accompaniment is also boring. Using an arpeggiated line with minimal counterpoint might make sense if you don't want to distract from the melody, but you can still use arpeggios to enhance interesting moments in the melody such as that leap around 3-4 seconds in. Changing instruments, dynamics, and articulation could also help give character to the accompaniment but it'll still be very simplistic.

Here's a short example with some tweaks. I kept 90% of the melody (not counting any mistakes I made transcribing) but rewrote the arpeggios. I also added a repetition of the little call near the end, with a modulation. I just wrapped it up in C Major which sounds a little goofy but you could go to some other key.

The fact is that anyone pursuing a creative endeavor will go through a period of awkwardness and cringe unless they are born Mozart. Looks like OP has also posted a more fleshed out version which doesn't have the issues I brought up:
https://clyp.it/11a4axaz

- OP's melody is an excerpt, which is why it feels it needs an introduction. The full version still doesn't have an intro and the start is a little abrupt, but this one actually feels like a beginning this time.
- The accompaniment is fleshed out, specifically by adding a bass line and percussion. The bass line emphasizes the downbeats while the percussion keeps the accompaniment from feeling as boring. The OP's arpeggio fits as feature of the background beat much better than it does by itself.

OP appears to be more focused on beat mixing and sound production whereas I have a more traditional classical background. This was not apparent from the barebones clip OP originally posted and I simply worked with what was there.

Like it, can't draw a line to anything I've heard before. Depending on which direction you're going, I'd personally like to hear more voices and maybe some upbeat percussion, which >>5861725 sort of points to.
I think in this longer version I'd flip my opinion and say that it isn't quite clean or interesting enough. Mainly the keying of the melody.

>>5853680
This is an interesting arrangement, but it feels too clean for my liking. To untrained ears... it definitely does sound like your background coloring the track.

Dude, EVERYTHING has already been made. You have heard so many songs over the course of your life, of course one of those will have subconsciously influenced you.
My band once wrote a song and we wondered where we knew the intro from - turns out it kinda sounded like the Gummy Bears theme song. As long as you don't copy it 1:1 I see no problem.

I'm gonna talk out my ass here, but I think people got much more scared of copying after the popularization of the internet. Copying -> breaking down what works and trying to recreate is much easier and will teach you much more than (as a beginner) trying to create something brand new from zero.

>This is an interesting arrangement, but it feels too clean for my liking.
It was deliberately an incremental change to the original and wasn't intended to be a final product. It was just "here's one way to make it more interesting."
>>5862065
>Dude, EVERYTHING has already been made.
Not really, as you subsequently imply. Often what seem like minor changes in a melody can have a significant affect on the character of the music as a whole. And the more you add different pieces together the more different it becomes. Consider:

Final Fantasy theme on NES: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0SXhnT9RQ4Q&t=86s
Here's the 16-bit version from FF4: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NRbBrY1zY5Q
Here's the ending theme for Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past:
https://youtu.be/_aqUR0Y3dM0?t=77

The first half of the A theme is extremely similar on both tracks. The chord progressions and melodic contours are almost identical. If I played only the melody and bass line on a piano for each one at the same time, you wouldn't even hear the Final Fantasy melody because the Zelda one is so similar. They differ only slightly in tempo, rhythm, and orchestration. Even that's enough to make them sound distinct, just for those first 4 bars. And after that, each composer goes in a different direction, making a cascade of differing choices that result in a very different piece overall. Uematsu goes tense and dramatic right away before going into endless repeats, while Kondo takes his time with a chill sonata-style development before returning to the A theme for a grand finale and transition into the credits.

Did Kondo rip off Uematsu? The fact that Kondo's first few notes of the B theme are identical to Uematu's FF theme make me think it might have been an inspiration or subtle tribute maybe, but Kondo's B theme is functionally very different. There's nothing unusual about the progression and the melody is a very natural one for it.

>Why do music critics sound like they have a massive cock up their ass.
It depends, if you're talking about >>5861725 and >>5853680 it means you just don't understand the technical terms and are intimidated for no good reason. The original criticism was meant for the composer, not you, and the second one is just a follow-up in the conversation for anyone interested in technical details.

If you're talking about music critics in mass media it's usually the opposite problem where reviewers just rephrase their subjective experience of listening as objective traits of the music itself and then embellish heavily.

Your average /vr/ poster is only capable of one-word opinions like "shit," "garbage" or maybe even the subtle "generic." But at least they don't sound like they have a cock up their ass right?
